tions were sealed and the testimony admitted,]
Defendants counsel proceeded then to show,
by the hooks that tho original number of abates
subscribed was. 2,411!0f these, 462 shares wore
not paid;-on 140 shares there was only partial
payment, and consequently forfeited to thts com
pany ; there were 20. other Bhares partially paid,
on which no dividend has over been
showing that the number.of shares fully paid in,
including the 1600 shares hy the state, was B**
894, making the shares of individual-stocks pfud
in, 1,794. The 1000 sliarCß paid by the slate,
amounted, to $40,000;. the 1,794: sbares.ofin
dividual stock amounted to §544,850. Over the'
20 shares, on which no dividend was declared,
there was paid s22s—making the value of the
capital Btook $86,075. ;
The afternoon was occupied with tho exami
nation of the.bookß of the company,
jsgy Tho. following resolution; was adopted
at a meeting of the .Board of Canal -Commis
sioners, at Hollidaysburg, on the 9th instant: -
Resolved, That the Collector of tollß at Phila
delphia, be direoted to allow a drawback of five
cents per hundred pounds on all freight cleared
at his office, and carried the entire distance,over
tho State Improvements to Pittsburgh; on which
the transporters’ charges (including tolls,) shall
not exceed 75 cents per 100 pounds; and a
drawback of 3] cents per 100 pounds; on all
freights clearcd'at his office, and carried the en
tire distance over the State Improvements to
Pittsburgh, on which the transporters’ charges
(including tolls,) shall not exceed GO'cents per
100 pounds. The Collector at Columbia iB likc
wiso directed to allow the same drawbacks on
freight coming on to the Canal at Columbia, and
transported tho. whole distance over, the State
Improvements to Pittsburgh; where the trans
porters’ charges do not exceed tho sums speci
ited above- The drawbacks not to be allowed in
any case, unless the Collectors rcocivo tho evi-.
dence most satisfactory to themselves -that the
cost of.transportation does not exceed tho Sums
of 75 cents or GO cents per 100 pounds, ns tho
case may bo. This resolution to take effect
from Monday next, the 11th of August, and to
remain in force for one month from this date.
Ftrsr Ward Primary Meeting. —Tlio Democratic
citizens of the First Ward, Pittsburgh, met on
Saturday last, iu pursuance of the call of the
County Committee, at the Fulton House, kept
by Mr. Hugh Sally.
On motion, John McFarland was unanimously
chosen as President, and John Clarke was elec
ted Secretary.
The meeting was the largest and most enthu
siastic one of the kind, ever held in- the
Ward.
George Wilson and P. C. Shanuon were elec
ted delegates by a very large majority.
On motion, it was That the delegates
just elected be instructed to vote for tho Hon.
W. W. Irwin, for the office of President Judge
of the Court of Common Pleas, &c.
On motion, the meeting adjourned.

ber, have been received at Holmes’ Literary De
pot, Third street, opposite the Post Office. They
are all good, numbers, filled with interesting
matter and fine engravings. Also, The Model
Architect, containing original designs of cot
tages, villas, suburban residences, &c. Each
numbor contains four lithograph engravings of
original designs for residences. . There will al
«o be six pages of .details corresponding to the
. .signs. ' ; •
Governor, evening, in Alleghe
ny City, at the Market House, Gov. Jm-uston
addressed severiil hundred . people. He :was
more eulogistic of his own administration than,
any one else could possibly have, been.- He
spoke of .it in the most flattering terms, and
several times, during the course of his remarkß,
he elicited applause for.’the compliments he paid
the Governor. .
B®* On Friday last, persons in two buggies,
when returning from a funeral, got racing, when
one of the buggies came in contact with another
buggy, and injured the person driving it;very,
seriously. One of the horses that, was racing
fell dead. The partieswere arrested yesterday,
and held to bail. .

and Cheap Publication Store, No. 85 Fourth at,
Godey, Graham, Sartaihand the Ladies’ National

Wednesday is the day appointed for the
great Whig Convention. Governor Johnston and

yesterday morning. Five- of them were com

Three persons were yesterday"bound
over by the Mayor, on charges of assault and
battery.

playing cards,’on Sunday, in a house on High
street. They paid a fine of §3 each."

WE, the undersigned Commissioners to receive sub
scriptions and organize a Company,upjpointed by
the Act of the General Assembly of Pennsylvania, en
titled. “ An Ac* to Incorporate the Pittsburgh and Sieu*
henvillc Railroad Company,approved March 21th,
(b49—hereby give notice that Letters Patent, beartag

wealth, and signed by William F. Johnston, Governor,
have been issued, constituting the subscribers and those
who shall hereafter subscribe, to the capital stock of

GREAT STORM.
ST. Louis, August 18.
: There was a great storm at St. Liuis, on
Thursday last., The. steamers Planter, Aleck.
Scott and Western World were blown from their
moorings. The Planter.lost her cabin and chim
neys. She was damaged to the amount of $2,-
600. The Bteamer Mountaineer lost her chim
ney and pilot house. Several rafts were comr
pletcly broken up. Mony light buildings: and
sheds were broken down, and fences, trees and
,crops were leveled to the ground.
There was great loss of life and destruction of
property at Muscatine, lowa, on the 11th, by a
freshet in a oreek. It occurred at night. Rouses
were swept off, m ono of which a woman and
three children were drowned. Therein $lO,OOO
damage done to the pnblic works.
The rain storm in De Soto and Marshall coun
ties, Mississippi, damaged the crops seriously. |]
DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN FULTON.
Yesterday a very destructive, fire occurred in
the village of Fulton, destroying property esti
mated at $lOO,OOO. The Fulton House and all
that block was completely destroyed, and aIBO
tbe West Bide of First street. Fifty families are
burnt out. Little insurance.

Louisville, August 18.
The Cholera is abating. There is only one
new case to-day. There were fourteen deaths
on Saturday and Sunday. The most of the ca
ses now under treatment will recover.

the Pampero, left with a resolve, to blow the
vessel ap rather than; surrcnderto the Spanish

Father Mathew arrived here on Saturdoy.

The hearing of Rust, the agent of Mr. Moore,:
by whom the slave Daniels was arrested, result
ed in his being held to bail in the sum of $lOOO
for an assault and battery in striking the negro.
