The absolute necessity of constructing a Rail road from Pittsburgh' to . Steubenville , there to unite with the Railroad to Columbus and Cincin nati is now admitted b 7 our citizens. Then let us all go to work in earnest, and make it without a moment's delay. The people of Steubenville and along the line west, without asking a dol lar from Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, have se cured sufficient money to build the Road frota Steubenville to Newark. All that is left for our citizens to do is to'assist the people of Washing ton county in supplying the link between this city and Steubenville. We know they will do it. The right spirit now prevails in this commu nity and when fittsburghers do art they act in earnest. The Railroad from Cincinnati through Colum bus to Cleveland, as our citizens all know, is completed, and is doing a very. heavy business. Two lines of passenger cars pass over the road daily, crowded with travelers from Ohio, Judi-. ens, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missoui', lowa, Sc., &c., destined for. Philadelphia; New York and Boston. Hundreds and thousands of persons who heretofore were in the habit of taking Pittsburgh in their route to the East, now go,by way of the Lakes. Therefore, this travel and trade is lost to us for the present. It is now proposed by the contract-breaking people of Philadelphia not only to build the ao called - Hempfield Railroad from Greensburg to Wheeling, but cross the Ohio river at Wheeling, and extend this road to Marieta, there to con nect with the Cincinnati and Belpre Railroad. The object Philadelphians have in view in turning their attention in that direction is well under stood. They teuh:to head Me Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and tap the trade and travel of the Ohio river at Cieeinnati! Some easy, good-natured people hereabouts 21 2 ' fact to. believe that the llempfield Railroad, and its counterpart the . Belpre. Railroad, will neverbe built. But these- Old Hunkers will find them selves very much mistaken. Philadelphia aver ice stops at nothing, as we all know to our sor row'already. It is therefore as clear as the noon-day sun that if Pittsburghers wish to bring bark to their city the trade and travel they have already lost by the Cleveland Columbus and Cincinnati Rail road, and prevuutthe disasters threatened by the Ilempfield and Belpre Railroads, theyniust car— eer—ACT! They must assist their brethren of Washington county in building the road to Steu benville, by liberal and prompt subscriptions. Let these be no hesitation, no holding back, no lukewarm feeling on the subject.. Go into it, friends, withyour whOle souls, and there will be no such woidas fail. The work has been begun gloriously. ; The .people all talk right--they feel right--;they are acting right. But they must, not stop, they must not think . of stopping their labors, until they hear the whistle of the cars! TUE STEUBENVILLE RAILROAD. Yesterday upwards of $40,000, in addition to that subscribed on Monday, were added to the capital stock of the Steubenville Railroad. This will make about $lOO,OOO subscribed in this city alone within two days! A good beginning, cer tainly! The money will all be subscribed, and the Read will be made, beyond a peradventure. All doubt is now at an end. The money sub scribed thus far is in sums of from $2450 to $BOOO. .1n a day or two block committees will be appointed, in every Ward of the two citlep, who will call upon all our cititena, and, receive subscriptions of $5O and upwards. This ar rangement will enable every man who has at heart the welfare of Pittsburgh to assist in con structing the Railroad to Steubenville--a work that is now intimately connected with the pros perity of Pittsburgh It should not be forgotten by the People of this State, that Jens fintonn, the present Whig candidate Dar Canal Commissioner, was a mem ber of Congress, during a very important part of the contest between our country and Mexico. It: should not be forgotten, that at a time of im minent_peril to our brave countrymen—when they were in the midst of a band of enemies vastly oustnumbering themselves, and when there 1 was no money at the disposal of the Secretaiy of War, which he could devote to the pay and sustenance of the Army ;—at such a moment as this Jon l s STROUD!, a Whig, voted against grant ing.supplieS to his countrymen—thus leaving them at the mercy of an enemy as blood-thirsty and relentless as savages, and even more cruel than the Indians who fought with them in their guerrilla warfare. • , We would respectfully' suggest to the friends and-stockholders of the ConnelsVille Railroad, that negetistions be opened with Balihnore int niediately, with the view of putting under con tact the Railroad from Pittsburgh through Con- • nellville,' connecting - with' the, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The charter is still alive, and a considerable sum of money has.beeu subscribed. By the making,of this :Road, Baltimore will se cure the trade of all 'the region of country around the head of the Ohio, otherwise last to her, and also a large portion' of the trade and tiwel of Ohio, Indiana, and other Western States. In law, all who aid and abet a crime, of any magnitude, are 'regarded as equally guilty with the actual perpetrator ; and morally (to to say nothing of the professor of religion,) every man is bound to regard his neighbor as guiltless of crime or of wrong until full and' tud•-_ ficient proof of guilt has been produced. Mere rumors of wrongs committed, are not enough to affect any honest and enlightened mind against another; and as insinuation is not only the most cowardly mode of attacking another, but the most questionable of all proofs of guilt; we must regard the professedly pious editor of the Gazette as adt companion for the slanderous and cowardly insinuator of the wrongs spoken of; and meriting an equal, or deeper grade of uublic I condemnation. We have seen not one word 'of evidence going to fix upon the Canal Commission ers, or any others connected with our public works, tho slightest imputation of wrong, and we believe no such evidence exists or can be pro duced. Valuable Antiquities. We extract the following from the correspon dence of the Ohio Statesman at Rome. These rare, splendid and valuable antiquities will no doubt be added to the collection. in the Smith, sonian Institute at Washington City, or to the Library of Congress,—as no officer of theynit ed States can hold any present made to him by a foreign government, or by one of its citizens, unless with the'express inaction of Congress.— Our public functionaries abroad, ore therefore satisfied to let all such presents go into the great collection that bas been accumulating from al most the earliest moment of our governmental existence:— Mr. Cass trims his diplomatic, sails very neat.; ly, and has run between Scylla and Charybdis, without so much as a single leak. Sinoutan AND TF.RaTIILE Acctnr.sr.—We learn learn from the Reading Adler, the particulars of an extraordinary accident which oconrred on Saturday, the 21st ult., in Bern township. Mr. Elisha Davis, a large man, weighing about 200 pounds, and 60 years of age, was engaged in making a small hay-stack, and before he quite finished, cast over the side a pitch-fork with a handle of the ordinary length, which stood up right against the stack. After completing his work, he descended-from the stack himself, and unfortunately alighted at the very place where the fork was standing, the handle of which pierced his bPdy between the legs, and penetrated into the stomach about 17 inches, until it touched the breaeLbone There was no one present at the time but a small boy, who endeavored to draw the handle out of the wound with one hand, but not suceeding, he afterwards took hold with both hands, and by exerting himself to the ut mostof his strength, pulled it out. The wound ed man, in excruciating pain, walked some dis tance towards his dwelling alone, when . a neigh bor approached, and assisted him home. The handle of the fork was about inches thick, and sawed off blunt at the end which pierced. him. What is almost incredible to relate, he has so far improved as to be considered out of danger. WOMEN A 8 FIELD LABOAEIIB.-Mr. (hoely, in one of his letters from Savoy, shows the condi tion of women in that country: I think I saw quite as many women as men at work in the fields throughout Savoy. A girl of fourteen driving a yoke of oxen attached to a cart, walking barefoot beside the team and plying the goad stick, while a boy of her own age lay at length in the cart, is one of my live liest recollections of Savoyard ways. Nut .brown, unbonueted women;hoeing corn with an imple ment between an adze and a pie axe, (and not a bad implement, dither, for so rugged and un plowed soil, women driving hogs, cows, &c., to or from market, we encountered at every town. So much hard, rough work and exposure is fatal to every trace of beauty, and I do not remember to have seen a woman in Savoy even moderate ly good-looking,•while many were absolutely re volting. That this in not Nature's fault is proved by the general aspect of the children, who, though swarthy, have often good forms and feat ures. .t InCUareTANTML EVIDENCE.—The uncertainty of human judgment and of circumstantial evi dence, has been recently illustrated by a. case in Massachusetts. young man named John Perry, was tried for burglary and robbery- at Dartamouth, convicted, and sentenced to the State's Prison for life. Since then, at different times, two rogues have been arrested, who con fessed the burglary for which Perry was sen tenced. Ta the Friends of Temperance, everywhere, in Allegheny eounty.:L-The Conrention, - holden in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Pig &Creek, on the 4th instant, sends greeting. Banynans:—The abolition of intemperance by the eradication of the'drinking usages of socie ty is an object Worthy of our gravest•delibera tions, and most indefatigable exertions. Total abstinence is the foundation on which is reared the superstructure of our temperance reforma tion. In their respective localities, onr associ ations have accomplishedmnch. Theyhave pro duced a spirit of enquiry on the subject, and among the religions and sober portions of the com munity the use of intoxicating I i qucrrs aeon ordina ry beverage by their exertions has became disrepu table. They have done more. They have been the means of guarding many heedless youths from vice and destruction: and of exerting a restrain ing influence overthe minds of persons of ma truer years. Their operations have also been crowned and blessed of God in improving the con dition of society, and as auxiliaries in the sin ner's conversion to the. faith of Jesus' Christ. But however much may have been accomplished for the good of society, our reformation is far from being complete. King Alcohol still reigns in our midst, and claims many as his ;subjects. He has. through the power of a depraved appe tite--for the sake of gain—and by the influen ees of long established drinking usages in socie ty—many devoted advocates and subjects. In the broad road leading to destruction, - he sits supreme. Enthroned in the affections of his de-; voees, he exerts a powerful influence in behalf of the kingdom of darkness. Brethren, we cordially accede to, the platform of action published some time isincelv our Al legheny temperance friends. We will not use the elective franchise in. the elevation of persons to places of profit and trust in our beloved com monwealth, who are theoretically or practically opponents to our reformation. By giving our suffra c les to persons of drunken or doubtful hab its, would be both unwise and impolitic. Be sides, on our part, it would argue insincerity in our cause of reform. - • • Unprincipled men—men who make their own elevation paramount to the good of society—can be well spared from the councils of the nation, and the execution of our laws. If any of the political parties shall disregard the voice of rea son and the rules of propriety in the selection of candidates; and present for our suffrnges men morally disqualified, so far as we are concerned, theY-mnst abide.the consequences of their own imprepriety. At present, Brethren, thocanse of temperance in our country is certainly in the ascendent; and several grave questions are presented for our consideration. And Ist, what is present duty! Whiskey houses, or the ante of intoxicating liquors as a common beverage in our county, in consequence of the deep-toned feeling in favor of temperance, have became a nuisance and a disturbing element in our midst. Their influ ences wage war against our holy religion, our literature, and domestic happiness. Our exer tions ought to be directed in the best and most effi cient manner for the removal of our mbral disgrace and pecuniary injury. - Rum shops and dogge ries have long been defended and protected by class legislation in our Commonwealth. This in morals is wrong. No modification of license laws can meet the case, or render right what is inhe rently sinful. 2nd, Ought not the temperance societies of our county to meet some time in the ensuing autumn, by delegation, in thp city of Pittsburgh or Allegheny, for the purpose of ex changing their views on the proper modes of na tion in advancing the cause of temperance and good order? Concert in action gives weight to the cause which it is intended to advance. The pulpit—the bench—the box—the •medical staff —the ballot-box—the merchants—the mechan ics-,and the farming interest are in good mea sure, in our county, under the blessed influen ces of the temperance refomatien. There are, alas! many exceptions; but the chief power is in oar hands. flow shallwe use it! Or shall we content ourselves, as heretofore, without any direct aggreession upon a jicensed system of iniquity in our midst.: Brethren, Brethren, there is; one other evil to which we would call your attention; and at present we have done. Many youth in attending the markets in our cities, are greatly injured by stopping in the whiskey houses surrounding the market places. Many of these have their circles of loa fers and loungers who are ruinous in ensnaring and debasing the youth of our most respectable farmers. Whiskey houses, so far as their influ ence extends, degrade and ruin the morals of our towns and villages ; and often the whiskey shop by the wayside sends forth its vulgarity and blasphemy to the annoyance of even the brute creation. • • In conclusion, we - respeotfully recommend to our temperance friends of Pittsburgh and •Alle gheny, to fix the time for a convention by dele gation, and issae a call upon the societies t? be . represented therein • . ~ •,.. In behalf'of temperance we are' your fellow laborers. Tttos. C. GOTLIBIE, Secretary.
