July 10th;1851. ~To Messrs. LoOniis, Shaler and Stanton, At torneys for Respondent. . ' Attempted liabbery.—The Enterprise of' yes terday says that a bold attempt was made last night; about one o'clock, to breakinto the store of Mr. G. R. Adams, on Federal street. While endeavoring to force the door on Water alley open with a bar of iron, the noise aroused Mr. A. On going to the windeir, he discovered the burglar standing at the door, and presently he walked off as deliberately as though he was on his own dominions. We are requested to invite the " stranger" back, and on his return he will doubtless meet with a worm reception, and a striking illustration of the manner in which the ban might be put in motion. Singular Trial. —A woman who lives in Hard sciabble, in the Eighth ward, yesterday went to complain of persons, who had, as she alleged, committed an assault and battery upon her.— .They were arrested end brought down, together with a number of witnesses. When the case was examined, it was found that almost the whole party were to blame. The informant, three of tho defendants and four of the wit nesses were fined one dollar each and the costs, which they paid and were discharged, vowing never to go to law again. Nearly - -Drawned.—A number of the United States recruits went to the Allegheny river, on Wednesday night, to bathe, and while in deep water, one of their number, a man named Bax ter, was seized with the cramp, and sank. He would undoubtedly have been drowned, had not two young men named Jeremiah Lutz and David Morrison, who were standing on the bank, plunged in and rescued him from a watery grave. Paving Counterfeit Ifoney.—Michael Donoghue was yesterday committed' to prison by Mayor Guthrie, charged. on oath of George Stoops, with passing a two dollar counterfeit bill, on the Fanners' Bank of Lancaster, upon him. Beating Hit Wife.—Williata Daily was yester day committed to prison by Mayor Guthrie, charged, on oath of Adeline Dailey, with assault and battery. ilathing.—The police should certainly prevent pSrsons from bathing in the river, near the St. Clair street bridge, daring dayliget. - lifarine fforpital.—There aro now ten patients in the United States Maxine Hospital, under the able medical superintendence of Doctor J. 3. Myers. Lriting.—The grading and paving of Magee and Chesnut streets. was let out yesterday by the Street Committee. Mayor's Levee.—The Mayor's levee yesterday -mui attended by five common cases, three of Irlpm paid their fines, and two were committed. - . - PitUbtargh Life Insurance Co.
