The members of these societies were all liege subjects of King George. In 1773, when disaffection to the mother country (as Great Bd. tarn was then called) began to spread through her North American colonies, those opposed to the re lations that existed, found it necessary to form some tallying point, in order to necertain or corn% bine their own strength. This was the origin of the St. Tammany Society, or Columbian Order, and Be operations were aecret, aud directed against toryism, until after the revolutioo. It then direc ted its power against federalism, and that party that inherited, to a certain extent, the men and principles of the '7d Tories. It has more of the power and characteristic of a national institution than of 'a local one, and iu times of trial has wielded a terrible power through. out the federal Union. There are members of the order Irani every State. and have been from its commencement. Its sachems are thirteen, corn , puting with the thirteen original States that form ed the Union. Its banners are thirteen, each hay. log the name and coat of arms of these old thirteen States emblazoned upon it. On its books are enrolled some' of the most prominent dead and living statesmen of the democratic party, each as De Witt Clinton, Aaron Burr, Daniel D. Tomp kins, Andrew Jackson, R. M. Johnson, Martin Van Burea, Dixon H.Lewie, end a host o f the planets, stars, and small lights of the great repub lican party, comprising about 4,000 names. There are perhaps 600 now living. Of these, about 150 generally meet at the annual election. This year 183 voted. The Tammany Society own the building known as Tammany Hall, which is worth $lOO,OOO. The sachems vote all the appropriations and col. lect the revenue. No man eau be a sachem or other officer without being a member. The grand sachem is elected by the sachems from their own ranks. The sachems bold great power. If they are united they can unite the sections of the de. mocrecy, and prevent any party from meeting in the hall, but such as they endorse and consider the regular democracy. 'Although the general corn. mittee. elected by the eighteen wards, appear to be the power that regulates the democracy, yet it is not so. "There is a power behind the throne greater then the throne itself," and that power is the sachems of Old Tammany. How to mak• Vinegar. There are manygreat notions entertained among our farmers about making vinegar.. The grand old plan was to pot out cider or water and motets- sea in escask to the sun, and expose it to the In. mina* , with a bottle in the bung-hole. There are still as many ideas entertaiued about making ci der u there are about making soft soap, and fuck is frequently held to be the umpire who decides whether it will be vinegar or no vinegar. The reason why cider or other fluid mixtures change their nature and become vinegar, is owing to a transformation of the particles, and then a separation of one or more, and a combination of others. The oxygen of the atmosphere, although it is not now, as was once believed to be, the only acidifier, still it is the great one, and vinegar is formed by the cider parting with its carbonic acid gat, Watch it cannot do without absorbing oxy gen. The reasonable way, then, to make vinegar rapidly and surely, is to expose the cider as much as possible to the atmosphere The new way, and what is supposed by many to be a patent way to make vinegar, is to let the cider percolate over a very exposed surface. This is the way they do it in the vinegar manufactory. fhe apartment where it is made is freely exposed to the air, and is kept at °temperature of about 60 degrees. The cider is lelt to run in small streams into troughs with bottoms full of small holes; then from that over very fine wood shavings such as soft maple; and let these be fully exposed to the air, and rests log on a slatted bottom made of clean bows or lathes, below which the vessel (or receiving it should be placed. Vinegarcan be made from mo lasses and water, grapes, corn stalks, beet roots, and many other substances by this process in a few days. Cider, however, makes the best vine gar. Many modifications (for cheapness) of the above plea may be resorted to, the grand secret be• ing the exposure of the liquids to be changed into vinegar is layers or strata to the oxygen of the at. =sphere. There is not a farmer but with a cask, an old tub, and a few shavings, could make good vinegar in oue fifth of the period now required by the common plans in use for that purpose. la those vinegar factories introduced held by French men, the plans adopted are those we have narrated. After cutting down the largo growth and burning over the underbrush, they pro, eseded to contrive a plan to get the fallen trunks to. gother in a pile for the purpose of burning aim—. The land lay upon a side bill, and they concluded that if they could roll a large log which lay near the summit, and place it about half way down they might pile the rest against it, and thus secure the object. But how wero they to prevent it, when ooco under way, from rolling to the bottom, and thus do. leafing thew plant To accomplish this they obtain• ed a rope, and making ono end fast to the log, ono of them was to hold on to the other cod to prevent its going too far, while the other was to start it.— Fearing that he might not bo able to prevent the rope from slipping through his fingers, Jimmy, who was the steersman, tied it to his body. "Start him as y ' , helm," said he, after convincing himself that all wag right and tight. In California's wines. The Valley of the Geysers. Professor Forrest Shepard, in:a letter to the Evening Picayune of San Francisco, giies the fol. lowing graphic description of a remarkable valley discovered by him in the coast range of the Napa Valley. Another account says that Professor Shepard intends to claim part of the valley, and plant tropical trees in the hot soil: - Marine EDITOIIS answer to your inquiry respecting the Geyser fountains on Pluton river, permit me to say that my attention was first or. rested at the remarkably peaceful and quiet flier. mal springs in Napa valley by the wonderful me. tamorphism of the rocks. It occurred to me that the springs, or the chemical action causing them, might have been instrumental in producing this change. On diligent inquiry, I learned that the Indiana knew of a place where the heat was much greater formerly than now. I was led to believe this from the fact that the springs.of Messrs. Rit- chie Tucker varied their -temperature four or five degfees in the apace of three or four weeks. I next Visited the place indicated by the Indians, and found it perfectly tranquil externally, and noth ing on the surface to attract special attention. But, on' igging down about two feet, I found that the heat increased eo rapidly that I could not bear my band in the earth. I Inserted the bulb of my thermometer, and the mercury instantly rose to one hundred and twenty degrees of Fahren. heir. From observations already made in company with Professor Jameallooney, I was led,to believe there existed a line of thermal action under the neighboring mountain chainkand accordingly, in company with Mr. P. Cyrus, J. Cyrus, and B. F. Briggs, (most excellent companions and expert bunters,) I travelled northwesterly in the line of thermal action"; acid, after wandering through el, most innumerable dense thickets, on the fourth day after leaving the head of Nepa valley, we ar rived at an immense chasm full one thousand feet in depth, where the rocks had evidently been rent asunder by great violence. Here, in the bottom of the valley, we found a clear and beautiful fie-. er, and its terraced banks covered with a most luxtirisnt vegetation and spring Dowers soothe Bth of February. This extraordinary appearance was soon explatnedi for, on proceeding up the river, the earth grew warm under our feet, and as we erne'• god from a thicket of evergreen bordering a deep fissure in the mountain side, the secret workings of the inner world suddenly burst upon our aston ished senses. You may judge of my surprise when I found myself, not on the brink of a volcanic crater or salfatara, nor amid the sallies of Hum boldt, and yet the earth so hot as to burn my feet through the soles of my boots. At no place was dare any appearance of lava, but wpowerful catalytic action going on effecting the dissolution of every kind of rock, the evolution of steam through innumerable orifices, and some. times in columns rising like that from an ocean steamer, one or two hundred feet in height; also the decomposition of sulphuretted hydrogen gas, the eudden formation of boiling hot water, the de position of beautiful crystals of sulphur, and the (urination of mina or teas sulphuric acid and an astonishing amount of metallic oxides, mineral salts, and the cementation of breciated end conglo merate rock. The scene leads the mind almost to bewildermeot, and you tremble as you approach the Geysers, lest, like - the lamented Pliny, you be come a victim to your curiosity, especially when you find yourself sinking, ae did the writer,, into the abyss below, isy breaking the thin crust under your feet; The spouting Geysers, the boiling mnlstroms, springs. o 1 hot water, seeam pipes, &e. probably exceed two hundred on a ball mile square. The writer has commenced a series of experiments and improvements at the place, and has made arrangements to cut a road and erect a house on the premises, and in doe time hopes to eommonicote to the public the results of his obser vations.
