PETROLEUM OR ROCK OIL;
I T is not more than one year ago since this great rem
edy was brought before the public, for the relief and
care of disease. lie great powers to heal, have, since
then; become fully appreciated by the community, and
we allege that the longer it is tried the more certain will
.its great fame spread. It is not the remedy of a day,
got up for the sole purpose of making money; but, one,
which we conceive, will continue to be used when all
nostrums have beer forgotten. The PETROLEUM is
a Natural Remedy, elaborated in the depas of the earth
by a power and agency that laughs to scorn all human
competition. It is our duty, when we write about a
medicine, that we write satrru—tbat we say nothing
calculated to deceive those who may trust our word or
pat confidence In our statements. The sick are very
apt to catch at any thing that promises relief from dis
ease. A story can hardly ho too highly wrought to an.
awer the object of gulling or humbugging some of them.
Now, we do not desire to do this ;.we are anzious only
that the troth In relation to our Remedy should he told,
in order to secure for it a reputation far exceeding any
single article of the omens medico. Plain, unvarnished
facts—facts that may be ascertained In our own city rind
neighborhood, bear ample testimony in favor of the Pe

Baron Limo, in his celebrated work on Animal Chem

cous membrane of the entrench of the calf, in which va
rious arucles of food, as meat and eggs, will be so soft
ened, changed and digested, just in the same manner as
they would - be in the human stomach."
Dr. PEREIRA, in his famous treatise on " Food and Di
et," published by Fowlers Jr. Wells, New lork, page 35,
states the same great fact, and describes the method of
preparation. There are few higher authorities than Dr. ,
Pereira.
, Dr. Costae in his valuable writings on the " Physiolo.
gy.of Digestion," observes that "a diminution ofthe due
quantity of the Gastric Juice is a prominent and all-pre
veiling cause of Dyspepsia;' and he states that "a dis
anguished professor of medicine In London, who was
severely niMetcd with this complaint, finding everything
else to fail, had recourse to the Gastric Juice, obtained
from the stomach of living animals, which proved com
pletely enccessful."
Dr. Gummi, umber of the famous works on " Vegeta

that the stomachs of animals, macerated in water, im

Dr. SUEDE'S great work, the "Chemistry of Man "(Leo

of Digestion. Front recent experiments we know that
food is dissolved as rapidly In an artificial digestive
fluid prepared from Pepsin, as it is in the natural Oar

Professor Du:cubism', of the Jefferson College. Phila
delphia,in his greatwork on Human Physiology, devotes
more Wan fifty pages to an examination of this subject.
Ills experiments with Dr. Beaumont, on the Gastric
Juice, obtained from the living human stomach and from
animals, arc well known. "In all cases." he says, "dl
gestion occurred as perfectly in the artificial as in the
natural digestions."

It has become customary in the Atlantic cities for con
gregations to insure the lives of their Pastors, and on
Christmas or New Year's day to make the family a pre
sent of the policy. This is certainly an excellent way
of showing their regard for their Minister, Whose salary
in very many eases is scarcely equal to his immediate
wants. To the mars.pf fandAy, at his death, it is a con
solation beyond expression to know-that his helpless
little ones are thus provided for.
Churches involved, would do well to insure the lives
of one or more of Me trustees, at whose de.mise the
amount would be applied to liquidate the debt.

THE subscribers:take this method to inform property,
holder ; hootie..builderit, and' all others interested,
that they still continue the business of Tin Roofing, in
S all its brandies. Their skill and experience- this part
of the business, has hitherto enabled theni to - glite entire
satisfaction. - And they, hope, that by continuing this
same policy of using the best materials, and employing
skillful workmen:to keeptiPthis favorable impression.
If the question of. Tin Roofing was net!, or just brought
before the notice of this' community tor the 'first time,
we would consider that the importance of the subject
I would justify us in ex.tending.ourviewson its superior
advantages. This, however, is not the ease. We shall
.therefore, confine ourselves to a few remarks. OTI the
fith•day of June,lB44,(nmarly seven years ago,) we fin-.
fished our first job of Tin Roofing in .this :place.:. Front '
that up to the present time, we have covered with tin
the roofs , of the finest and most, costly, buildings-that
have been erectedita this county: We have given our
views on a previous occasion on the stiperior advantage
of Tin over. iron, as a covering. for , houses.- And time,'
the, great tester of allthings, has but too clearly proven
the correetnessof our opinion. . - • .
Againiif we place Tin i uma.position, with Slate as
a covering for !muses
. sve think that tin will hear a favo
rable comparison, with some decided advantages
iliese advantages are, that when tin is used the roof can
he made much ilatter—thereby saving materials in , the
lengthof rafters, brick in the gable •ends—making tbe
house easy of access in case of a fire, and showing a
better finish, and appearance.- Also, when tin- is used
the gutters are worked fn, thereby saving the extra and
heavy expense, for copper gutters, copperiLashings;&e.,
—things indispensible on slate roofs. If further reasons
were deemed necessary, we could offer the experience
of our eastern cities in proof what has been -auvrizieed,
as it is a well known fact that New:York and othcreast
ent cities very generally prefer even tin for, their most
- -costly and splendid buildings; notwithstanding they have
a full supply of slate at their doors: , With these remarks
we will leave the subject withtheselmerested„ and will
take pleasure in'giving further information when called"
