LOCAL MATTERS
■ ticmncE.*- To hare the sidewalks of the streets
filled up by barrels of molasses and oil, Fig metal,
<tc. , is n aomploto notßaace. We hear a number of
oar mtiiena complaining.ofauch obstruction, and it
waa only a Tew evening* since when a lady ao
companiad by her husband , was pissing along Lib
erty afreet had a costly dress completely mined
by coming in contact with a lot of oil.
We learn, that information ha* been laid before the
Mayor, and we hope such steps may bo .taken as to
present a like occurrence. Indeed we can imagine
of nothing so provoking as to havo one’s clothes
spoiled by the negligence or others. Hand street,
we understand, is similarly barricaded by piles of
pig metal, .endangering the limbs of persona pass
ing that Way at night;'
CBiunnOE.— A short time ■ since a challenge

the following return.
We, the undersigned Judges to decide upon the
merits of the business penmanship of John D. WiU

If the question of Tin Roofing was new, or just brought
I before the notice of this cpmnmnity. for the fixst time,
we' would consider that .the importance of the subject
would justifjnieln'extehding'onryiews ott-iis superior
advantages; This, however, is not the case./ We shall
therefore, confine ourselves to/a few remarks. On the
6th day of Jane,lBl4 l (nearly eeven years agOj) we fin
ished onr first job of Tin Roofing in this place.' From
ihat up to the present time,-. we nave covered with tin
the toots of the finest -and most costly buildings that
have been erected in-this county. Webaye given our
vie we On a previous occasion op the superior advantage
ot Tin over iron, as a .covering for houses. And time,
the great tester of all things, hasbui too clearly proven
the correctness of our opinion;
■ Again, ifweplace Tinin juxta-posiuonjwith Slate as
a covering for houses, we think'that tin will bear a favo*
rablb r comparison; with some:’decided advantages.—.
These advantages are, that when tin is used the roof-can
be made much flatter—thereby Saving materials, in the
length of rafters, brick in the gable the
honse easjrof access in 'case of a fife; and showing a
better, finish and’appearance.: Also, when tin iVused
the gutters are worked in, thereby saving the extra and
heavy expense for copper gutters, copper flashings, Ac.,
—things indispensible on slate roofs: ■ If- further.reasons
were deemed necessary, we could offer the'experience
of our eastern citiesln proof what has been aavnnced,-
as it is a well known fact that New York and other east
ern cities very generally prefer even tin for i heir most
costiv-andaplendidbuildings, notwithstanding they have
a full supply of slate nt their doors; ‘ With these remarks
we will leave the subject with those interested, and will
