Rock In Lake Superior'. One otthe rnOtirremarkable rocks of which we have nnY knowledge has lately. been discovered in the middle of the Inland Sea, Lake Superior. By a gentleman who has lately, retomed from Copper Harbor, we learn that a *hilt of trap rock has ye. ry lately been discovered rising in the lake from 150 to 200 miles from bald, and ascending above the water 'a - distance of not above four feet. What rentletit it more extraordinary is that it stands en tirely alone ; and all around it, so tar as examina tions have b een made, no bottom has been reach ed by arry of thelead lines used on the lakes ; and the point of the rock itself does not exceed an area of more thin six: or seven feet square ; and so far as observation of it has extended, it does not ap pear to 'enlarge in size as it descends. It has al ready, he states,,become. a source of alarm to the rnarineni who navigate the lake, aim take especial care, ittPassing, to give'it as wide a birth as pos. ble. It is the small—too remote and dangerous to admit of a light;' and therefore its tetnnval will doubtlesS pertain to government. A Single blast Item a blare of , sufficient depth would do it; but thesarface of the rock being so near that of the -water,:-,sPot:e, so narrow as to forbid any fegulaliP.,Clmnt-for worktnen, they would have to be atOndedectstently by a vessel of sufficient sizeto resist any sudden storm on the lake ; and would also have to be kept constantly under way, as no harbor or' even bottom far an anchor is within a %lay's sail. The discoverers relate that the rock appears to be a place of general resort fur the salmon trout of 'those lakes, as they found them in almost incalcu lable numbers; and having during their abort stay caught several barrels with no other instrument then a rod of iron, on one end of which they turned a hook. They tried with all the lines on board for sound. ings immediately round the rock, but without suc- cess. Such a vast column, could it be exposed to view, would laugh into ridicule Cleopatra's Needle, Pompey's Pillar, the Colossus of Rhodes, or any productioh of ancient or modern art.—Detroit Fret Prot. Steam on the Canal. The Shepkierdetuwn Va., Registar, says: " We hare recently paid a visit to Mr. Thomas G. Harris* busy and interesting establishment at Mercerqville, Washingtob county, Md. Our object was to learn, from personal inspection, what has been (Mlle toward maturing the enterprise so -spint edly undertaken by Mr. Harris, in his effort to test the nee of'steam on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. We found the boat chosen for the experiment in readiness to receive the engine, which is on the spot, having been lately brought down from the Cumberland foundry. where most of' the necessary machinery was made. The engine is of six horse power, but the boilers would answer for an engine of double that tutee. "'Not more than a weei , s work is required to put everything in order for the first trial, which is ex pected to come off about the 10th of next month. . " The paddle-wheels—of recent invention, and just patented—are-placed within three feet of-the stern, and are of very peculiar construction—each paddle entering and leaving the water perpendicu larly. , , . The inreptor and ,patentee is Mr. Horatio Bias dell, who is also the machinist in this experiment, and dimes With Mr.' Harris the risks of tee enter. Shabld the 'effort 'Succeed, as we cordially hope it , may, two rely important improvements will have been made at once. The whole valley of the Potomac would quickly feel the effects of it in an Increase of population, and a rise In the value and price of lands. We reniarked, also, three large barges on the stecks.and nearly ready for launching. They ere of 125 tons •burthen each, and are intended for the transportation of coal. The aspect of affairs - ar...blercerville was very ,pleasing, and shows how much the spirit and intelli. gent enterprise of one might effect, even in a com paratively short period. The Court Wasithen eleared of all persons but the officers of . the court,..the prisoner having requested a private bearing.. He waived the reading the complaint, but his eounselrexeinlned it very carefully, without takinrany exption to it. The offence not be ing bailable, J udge Cushing ordered that the Nis. finer istionltt be committed to jail, there to remain to answer to. He appeared affable and collected, and even smiled pleasantly when told he would beve toe main'e few Minutes while the papers were being made out. He read a newspaper while waiting for the documents to be-put-into shape. The Complaint was mace before Judge Merrill, at his residence, about 11 o'clock on Friday night, and immediately after Dr. Webster was taken back to jail from the Medical College. Up to that time he was I only held in custody under a mitti tous signed by Constable Clapp. The gentleman who signed the complaint was one of Dr. Park man's lettingand collecting agents, and was the most decidediand pertinaceoua person of all con cerned in'beeing such a persevering search made within:and under the college building. The fol. lowing is II copy of the complaint: In the afternoon, Ephraim Littlefield, the janitor of the college, AM called into court to,recognize as a witness in the case, in the sum of $2OOO, and gave for his sureties Alvan Adams, Esq., and Mann. Leonetti Fuller and Charles M. Kingsley, the complainant. Mr. Parker, in making the mo• tion for repairing Littlefield to give sureties for his appearance to testify, said he was a man of some pecuniary responsibility, but it was impossi ble to Say tbat influences would not be brought to bear upon him AO keep him out of the way. A direct attempt was made to make out a sus picious' cireumstance against Littlefield. Three students, who are attending the medical lectures at the college. called upon the city marshal apd represented that on Monday last week, Littlefield offerred to give one of the students $7O for a gold watch, and tendered the money, a part of which was in gold, Some of Dr. Webster's friends thought that Littlefield ought to have been arrested upon the strength of this information. When questioned about the matter by Mr. Parker, county attorney, Littlefield promptly explained it by saying that It occurred oil the Monday Preceding the disappear ance of Dr. Parkman, and that the money was re ceived from students for fees to be by him paid over to the proper officer, and that having it in his hand, be jocosely proposed to buy the watch with it. The ground upon which Dr. Webster's friends wished to hare Littlefield arrested, was his being in possession of so much money, so soon af ter the disappearance of Dr. Perlman. Mr. Par ker replied that ai Littlefield was worth some $2,000, there was nothing strange in his having $7O in his possession, and the circumstance was not a sufficient ground for arrestily , ' him for mut w der. This as before Mr. Parka had beard Mr Littlefield's explanation. Frcan the Beans Ilerald of nusday. Prof r Webster and lals-Paintly—Pro. reeding* of cast Evening, &c. One of Our reporters visited Cambridge last evening, and ascertained that on Saturday night Marshal Edwards, in consequence of apprehen sions by the Mayor, that an attack might be made I upon the residence of Professor Webster, on Gai -1 den street, dissembled twenty-five special police. men, who were directed to patrol near the house, without exeiting suspicions of their object. No attempt, hoWever was made to molest theinno centoccupants of the house, which is not owned by Professor Webster, but by Jonas Wyeth, Esq. Our reporter also learned some facts in relation to the personal history and family relations of the Professor. He is the son of the late Iterlionl Web. ster, Esq., formerly an effluent resident of the north part of Boston, where be died some time °hoot the year i 834, leaving about $4u,000, whi a eli, we learn, is conveyed as a life estate to Professor i Webster, and at his death, to his children. Yong Webster, while in College, was not considered passionate or fractious, but lather chicken hear.ed, us one orbit college mates expresses it. He was nervous but not quarrelsome. After he bad gra dusted, be went to Europe, and finished liis medi cal education in England nod Scotland. On his return from thence, about the time of his fathers death, he stopped at the Ararat, and became ac quainted with Miss Hinckly, now his wife, at the port of Papal; she was then residing with her fa ther, who held the post of American Consul at that port. He married her there, aulleturned to Cambridge, and lectured at the college fur a year or two, when be was elected professor, in the year 1837. Since then he has resided in Cambridge and has leetuted upon chemistry, geology, mineralogy, at Canibridee and in this city, and was in receipt of a Hilary, and from tickets to his lectures at the medical college, at the time , b 1 his arrest, of from two to three thousand dollars, which from his carelessness about money matters was insufficient fur his wants, and kept him always in debt. His family now consists of a wife and four daughters, the youngest sixteen years of age, and the elditt about twentydbree. The oldest is married to Mr. Dabney, the present Consul at Feyal. The other three daughters reside at Cambridge, and with their mother, are in deep affliction on account of the arrest and suspicions o:" their husband and fa• ther. The feeling entertained among the citizens of Cambridge, who best know Dr. Webster, is, that he is innocent of the charge on which he has been arresterkor that if guilty, some unknown provocation must have induced the fatal attack Our . reporter 'called last evening at the jail, and asterlained that the professor bad passed a quiet day, having partaken of his meals regularly, and being free from that alternate excitement and gloom which Characterized him for some 24 hours after his arrest. Yesterday afternoon, about five o'clock, a little child fell through one of the lower windows of the College, creating a considerable crash. Instantly a crowd of some. two hundred rushed to the spot, presuming it to have been the beginning of an at tack on the place; but the officers in attendance, Heath, Eaton. &c., quickly interfered, explained the cause of the excitement, and the assemblage grumblingly dispersed. The ever ready Washington Light Infantry,. Captain Cassel, relieved that gallant 'corps, the City Greys, Captain Thompson, yesterday morn ing, and were op duty, ready for any kind of tier. vice, throughout the Sabbath, until last evening. Then the New England Guards, Captain Joe Put. Bradlie, relieved them. Through the politeness of a sergeant of the Guard, we were introduced to Captain Put, and ascertained that the N. E. G. were to be held en Attendant for 'whatever might transpire. Corporal Joe Smith was full of ardor and gallantry. He is a &rifleman, noiwithst ending his drab coat. BEAUTIES OP TUT AIIISTOCRACT . —Mr. Dlsraeli has stated that the lands of the United Kingdom are mortgaged for an amount two-thirds as great as the National Debt. And the interest on these enormous mortgages, the interest on that crushing National Debt, and the support of the whole gov erning aristocracy, comes upon the backs of the laborers. There is where the whole burden falls, and there is whdre rests the whole burden of the world. In England every working man is the slave of many taskmasters. He works to support goyernment, army, and navy—to support a privi leged and pensioned aristocracy—to support the hurcb—to support the landed gentry, to pay the interest on the fiational debt, and the interest on -tbfllttirtgages of his landlords.
