OAT Moaning, Tune 1.540:1 ICEMARKS.—There appears duringthe last week to have been a general stagnation in all branches of business, owing in partvre presume to the advanced mate of the season; The rivers remain in fine navi gable order, but a greater number of the boats, on account of the Prevailing scourge below, have laid up for the present, consequently-the receipts or pro duce have not : been as large as might otherwise have been - espected, the reeniptu ei flout: yesterday were I • argor than they haee'beeTillit'ee.veral dais, but they were generally for "exportstion. Our figures, with but a law exceptions, remain unchanged from las t week. . • MONEY MATTERS.—The month of May pre senta an anomaly for the season in this city. Busi ness has been dull ; exchange on the east scarce and in the early part of the month , money tight, but at present the is some relaxation. The great de rangement of our local currency, indeed we may say its almost entire prostration, has had its evil of recta upon the operations of our Ousiness men, as well as the whole community; But good will result from the evil. It is not likely that for a good while to'eome, the authorities of our cities and county will have the temerity to again transgress the laws so . cutrageously. In the Atlantic cities money .is easy, and good tinsineas paper is eagerly sought alter: It could not be well otherwise; when every steam vessel from Europe brings large quantities of the precious , metals to our shores, to liquidate he balances of trade against the Old World . Within a short period we shall be in receipt of gold Rom California; and the "hard stuff" will entermore ' fully into the channels of circulation. The state of affairs in Europe indicating a general war; and in the event'of that dreadful calamity to it. there will be a vast advantage given to the commerce ofthe United States, as well as a great demand for our tread stuffs. And if the fanning interests do well, all other interests will prosper. Although money has been in demand this spring in Pittsburgh, and business not equal to the expectations of our citizens, yet we have heard but few complaints. Property keeps op; the city is extending rapidly its limits; and there is a buoyant hope of"good times coming." Western bank notes are in demand to supply the vacuum oc tensioned by the withdrawal of the scrip, and they bring more than their worth in the market. ASHES—The receipts , are fully equal to the de. mend and we notice a small decrease in figures with regard to pots, the others remain unchanged, small lots hove been disposed of at the following !quota tions: Scorchiags, 31g31 I Pearl s, Pots, 404; Salaretos, 5051 ALE—The demand is very good, without any chat,e in prices.
