The signing of the said Card on my put, was not done with a view to break down or in any other way to injure the business or standing of the Pittsburgh Morning Post. Nor do I repudi. ate the paper. Much less do I approve of the direct appeals which the editor of the Commercial Journal has made to the business part of this community to crush its editor for opinion's sake, or in any way in viting political action on this controversy'. My own motive was of a higher kind, namely, to bear my humble testimony of the upright, high-minded and honorable standing and character of the gentlemen whose names are therein set lorth. I done this ton, the more freely, and knowingly, from the het, that during the fast ten years, our business amid interests have been considerably blended together, and con ducted in such a manner, on their part, as to call forth this hasty response. Some of the Man ufacturers " thought that circumstances justified them in getting a public certificate of their stan• dind in this community, and I cherfully certified that they are esteemed honorable men.. Several of those gentlemen have, for years, known my opinion, that ten hours a day is as much as any human being ought to work in a Cotton Factory, and I am sure they are too honorable to desire to impute any other opinion to me.
