Ye ''neither know the magnitude of the sacrifices these poor sufferers made, nor the intensity of the agony by which that eacrifici3 was exacted I It was signed by some! And then the factory bells-were made to sound a joyful peal, and the fac tory. proprietors shouted a. loud"" hursa ! "—and " victory I " " yiellaiy!" Waa .proclaimed by the venal press, that had been corrupted by the factory proprietor's patronage and gold I ! Ii was slgnedby some ! And to the factory they hied ; hernia as had been their wont.' They seem ed ashamed ; they went round the dark - corners; they endeavored to, avoid observation ; they cast ,their eyes tio the 'ground ; they started eren at their own shadows. And yet, poor things ! what could they do but go t It was signed by some ! But others there were, the great majority, who still refused; who were still unwilling to bend the knee in abject submission, and sign the fatal contract. And they gathered around ' the factory to see what was going on ; curiosity nat urally attracted them. There were to be seen on the streets around girls of all ages, from the tender years o f ten or twelve up to the maturity of woman hood,—the accustomed wo•ltera in that factory.— And they looked on, and gathered more , and more. And they saw how gloomy were their prospects, and how hopeless, without one eheering, ray, was the dark vista of their future lives, that lay open before them. And the girls gathered more and more; and the youngest, ever the moat curious, crowded closest to the factorY walls. And without one single act of violence or outrage being committed on their part, oh! disgrace to humanity I scalding water and the hissing steam were thrown from the engine upon the poor children huddled there ; and one or more little girl was carried away, screaming with pain, and the tattered skin peeling off from her young cheeks.— And then some rotten eggs and mud were thrown by the girls. And this, sms, was the " hold, palpa ble and aggravated riot !!! " • , , • These are the prominent facts * of the aria, as we have learned them. And for this the little-girls were prosecuted by the factory proprietors;—none but private counsel appearing and pleading before conic and jury, - on the part of the prosecution. If it was a" bold, palpable and aggravated riot," where was the Commonwealth's counsel I Why was his voice not heard I The Mayor and the Police of Allegheny City, the public officers of the law, were present at the scene; why did they not institute the prosecu tion, if it was a " bold, palpable and aggravated riot I" In view of such a case as we have endeavored to present to the reader's notice, we blush not to say, we felt pity, and expressed synifiathy for the unfortu nate victims. Nay, more, we , felt indignation, and ;expressed it, too, at the conduct ill - their purse proud persecutors. But they got a verdict; and a jury pronounced those girls, some of whom were but children, guilty of a riot." And again thei facto-y bells were made to sound a joyful peal; and the factory pro prietors shouted " huzza et Victory , c Victory!" was proclaimed by a hireling scribbler, and a venal press. And the doge, and the vultures and the hyenas of falsehood and calumny and perge eution, were let loose on the Post and its editor And now, another word. meant in friendly guize,—for caution-and advice. We are not, as it is falsely represented, the enemy of the factory pro. prim's. They are their own worst enemies. But thhy must be told, and taught to understand, that the rapid accumulation of princelY fortunes by them selves, is not the only interist it manufacturing com munityis botind to protect and , secure. Labor is en. 'ingredient, an essential element, in all manufacturing, .operations; end it is, to say _the least of it, equally "entitled to the protection and-guardian care of soci , ety. And Capital commits a silly and suicidal act,', whoa it arrays itself in marked and deadly hostility to'Labtir. From that moment; may be dated the downwardlendency of all manufacturing prosperity.
