We give an extract::.- The Charter °reds Company, granted by, the Le gialatute bf this State in 1846, authorizes the con striction of a rail read from Columbus to any point on the Ohio River r north ofthe town of Steubenville, which may afford the easiest, most direct or advan tageous connection with Pittabrugh. We rejoice at the mcivementjust made, as indicating a determine don on the part of our citizens, to procure, as early as practicableithe advantages of an eastern outlet for ibis immensely productive region. We regard a connection with the cast, by way of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, as of. vastly , mere importance to this central portion ofthe State, than-any project which _has as yet been presented for our consideration ; and if the importance of our positicin, the amount of our products and business ability, were properly tin. derstood, they could not fail, in-our humble opinion, to attract attention, and secure the location of the great Central route, from those cities to the west. • Knox is emphatically the central county of Ohio, and the very centre of the wheat growing region of the State ; she possesses an industrious, enterprising and wealthy population, rapidly increasing in the tatter characteristic ; and we do not hesitate to say that there is not an interior county of equal area in the State, capable of affording "as large an amount of business, both freight and passenger, for a rail road, or possessing an equal amount of never failing water power (easily improicd) tor manufactories of any description ; while she is proverbial for health. Mt. Vernon is situated central between Newark on the South, and Mansfield on, the North, and hith erto. the heavy exports of wheat, Sour, corn, pork, and other products of the county, have been wag oiled to, and contributed largely to swell ' the bust mesa Statistics of those towns, without which they might bate appeared comparatively inconsiderable. Let the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Road make this place a point, extending thence west, south west, or both, and it will not only secure the large.busincui of the region through which it passes, but must ren der both NewarkAutd. 'Mansfield tributary thereto; for we hold the doctrine, that with a continuous rail road to Philadelphia (regarding the risk and winter interruption of the north) we should be able to reach even Naw York and Boston, in shorter time and dis tance, with greater certainty, and at less expense, than. by the northern route. From this point, too, the Pittsburgh Road would have a direct out-let to the Lake by means of the Sandusky Road to that city, and thence north-west, by other:improvements into Michigan, Wisconsin, &c.; and south, by the extension of the Sandusky road, soon to be comple ted to Newark and 'Zanesville, and there connecting . with the stack water navigation of theMnskingum, to the Ohio River at Marietta. • Togive our readers an ides of the business alines . county, we quote from the report ora Committee up pointed to ascertain thr value of the exports and imports.of the county: - There are within the present limits of Komi county, 45 flooring mills, 82 saw mills, 14 carding an d tolling thins; 6 wdolen factories, .4 foundries, 4 oil mills, 4-distilleries, 1 wire factory, and as far as ascertained, 14 tanneries. The committee hove not had time to ascertain the increase per item of the sever-al articles of export, but- their investigation has satisfied them that the increase has been important upon all, and very great upon many of the staple articles, since 1845. The imports for the year show an increase of ton nage to amount of 363 tons or 726,000 lbs, for the town ofMount Vernon alone. Upon the supposition that the remaining towns and trading posts have in creased-their importations in a like ratio, the aggre gate amount of merchandise imported during the year past, would reach 3,531,250 lbs. The best data within our reach induces a belief that 10,050 barrels of salt have been brought into the county by merchants, traders and farmers during the year past. " • - The „committee, for _want of time, have not been able to ascertain the importations of several exten sive plough, carriage, thrashing machine, and -Other manufacturing establis hments.'- - • the Artist. We arrived here higood health, after a passage of 18 days from New York. We found the Fal• con with 200 passengers; every canoe and bungo occupied at extravagant prices; the usual price for one passenger and two trunks to Cruces is $lO, but they are now getting from $4O to 50. Trunks and baggage are strewed about the negro huts, and it, is a perfect chaos for. the Yankees, u they cannot understand the natives, who to a man are negroes; there being but one white roan xesi. ding here, the collector of the port, from Bogota. Chsigres, that now sounds so large, Contains a bout 150 thatched negro huts. We learn that the Pacific steamer bas engaged 400 passengers between Valparaiso 'and Callao, for California- and there are 300 passengers already waiting on the Istinius. It will not be difficult for you to cross the Isth• mus; cnme with but one trunk and enough'to make one mole load, 250 pounds in all; take a small canoe alone and the expense will be but $32 to Puerile. YOu can leave this without the delay of an hour. Get a few biscuitsand apiece ofham or beef for the road, as you will find nothing tq eat on the way. It is believed here that some 2000 passengers will congregate at Panama, without any possible way of getting to. California; io that those by Cape Horn will arrive first. Say to Mr, 11. that it would be folly to start un der present circumstances, without first securing his passage by paying Rowland & Aspinwall; and that he should bring funds in small money.
