St. Louis New era; This excellent man, commander of the steamer St. Cloud, died on that boat, on her last trip up, and his body reached here yesterday morning. He was a native of Pennsylvania, and had been for many .years identified with the steamboat interests of the west. He was unobtrusive in hie manners, correct in his dealings, and as a commander held a high popularity. Heleaveis a wife and children, who now reside in Newport—and from the house of mourn ing, yesterday, the remains of the husband and fa- ther were borne to the tomb, with the attendance of the Odd Fellows. Between 4 and S o'clock, yesterday morning, as the watchman of the Memphis packet Tributary en tered the cabin, for the purpose of awaking the ser vants, he was met by a volume of smoke and a cur rent of air rushing In. The cabin was most instan taneously in a blaze. So rapid was the progress of the flames, that Mr. Hewett, the clerk, although im mediately aroused, was unable to open his money drawer and take out its contents, amounting to some $4OO, or to save his books, all of which wese lost. The bar keeper lost hi■ gold staid) and all his clothes. Indeed, all who were on board were glad to escape encased In bat little more than their night clothes. The Mustang and Empire were laying im mediately above the Tributary, and at one time were in considerable danger. The 'Tributary was cut from her moorings at soon as possible ; but in float ing out, she ran against the Adams Mail, and the fire communicating to her, it was not subdued until her cabin was nearly entirely destroyed. After bur ning nearly to the water's edge, the Tributary was scuttled and sunk. She was recently purchased by Capt. 3. W. Denny, and refitted and re-furnished throughout. She was valued at $5,000, and was in sured for $3,000. The Arkansas Mail was owned by Captain Diller, and run as a regular packet be tween this city and Madison.
