We make a Tew ex ceptions; and we should be glad rftve coold say, 1 that) among the exceptions, are all otir opponents in this-city : hat this we cannot do, while the Gazette, the organ of the old, genuine w Whigs l ' continues 8 to circulate against <3cn. Cue the most unmitigated slander?, long after they hare been disproTcn by the the most imdonbted authority, and even after they have been admitted to be slanders, by the more magnanimous editors, who sustain the doctrines its potty once sustained. In the course ofthe present contest, Gen. Cass has beta referred to as a swindler, a pnblic peculator, and one who bos amassed wealth unjustly, from the pnblic treasury; statements, going to fix upon him such a character ns this, bare heerocpeatcdly made In the columns of the Gazette, and we have perceiv ed not a mcgle dental of any one of them, however i pfepcattnms nr degrading. The story of his hating received an immense amount of pnblic money, for extra services, (and that even these services, extrav agant as were the claims, had been more i than once . ;.; .-oinpTy itnnanerated,) has been told sgato and again, and rang opou all the changes of which it was sus* eeptthle. Abandant proof has been offered, to satis ry Any reasonable mtad, that Gen. Cass was in no' wise liable to censure, in any part of Ins course as a pnblic officer; and that no one, since the organi sation of the government* had been mofe assiduous * in (he discharge of hia pnblic duties, or bad more economically managed every pecuniary affair with which he had been entrusted. Yet still ore all the changes of this charge rung; and the impression is in the most indostnous manner sought to be made, Jhat he has received, far bis' own emolument, from the public treasury, ao immense sum, beyond what be was in any manner fairly entitled to. The friends of Gen. Cass have not been willing to let these chbrges pass unnoticed, nor have they been wilting to let the pretended favorite of the Federal Native party pass, without an examination into the \ Mate of fais accounts. They have therefore shown the rank injustice of the charges preferred against their faithful standard-bearer; and have fearlessly confronted bis enemies with the crime of seeking to injure him before the public, on grounds which left their own candidate in a predicament, inconceivably worse (if either were liable to censure,) than bim whom they weiwjumlmg. We have therefore as serted without'fear of successful contradiction, that Gen. Taylor has received from the poblic treasury, an amount beyond bis pay, far exceeding the utmost limit of that charged against Geo, Cass ; and when the matter is pinned down, so that the slanderers of Gen. Caivcannot escape—-cannotd* proveour asser tions^—they at once, m a most cowardly, base and insidious manner commence of gelling up lattera nod certificate* from'public officers, to prove (what the Democratic party bs* never denied,) that Gen* Taylor has not received any money from the public treasury, the payment of which was col au thorized by lawj These cowardly pettifoggers try to escape m tills manner; and thus insinuate that Gen. Cass /ms re ceived mooey from the treasury, not authorized by law, when we prove that Gen. Taylor has received a much larger amount beyond his pay, even than that which they assert lias been received byGen. i'. Csss s -and, slier doing this, they hare iheimpi* dence toaikug (o publish their certificates and let • ters, &e. about undisputed tacts 1 We prefer occu pying our paper rn a more profitable manner. Casa—the vjle snpporters of Great Britain in 1812, and ofhlexico in 1847—funr. charged him, virtually, (for they are too cowardly to doso openly,) with . -having received an immense beyond that to .. which he waa.iegally entitled jand we have proved ? tho infamous slander to be utterly unfounded. In tho-jneantitne, wo hare shown, by appealing to the .: same source from whieh they professed to den ve lhelr i - information, that; even if Gen. Cass has received a dargesomm the coursn of his public career,—it has been expended io the discharge of rnost onerous and expensive duties; and:that Gen; Taylor, without having had any snch duties to perform,- has received ; from the public-treastfry a much larger amount than hav ever been received by Gen. If any thing is proved, by the Tacts that wodtcre adduce,.it Is—not that tho law of 184 b. naa calculated to operate injuriously upon the great interests of the country, but—that the limited sup ply of iron produced in England, for a few years past—and the partially increased demand in our own country, have stimulated our manufacturers to an immense overproduction, that is necessarily suc ceeded by a temporary and partial suspension ; with which the Tariff of 184fi, or the Democratic party, had as little lb do, as the Imaum of Muscat. Those who are engaged in the manufacture of froo, are as well aware of the coat of the article, the quality in the market, and the probable demand, ns ore those engagecr m any other branch of busi ness j anil it in equally: their duty to guard against overproduction, as it is the duty of.any others, who. depend upon supplying the wants of the communi ty, m order to obtain for themselves the comforts of life, and- to omasa wealth. tThe merchant who .should import into hia town or city, a supply of any particalar;arliclc,-far beyond the amount that was usually hold by all others in the same place, and with no remarkable increase in the demand for that article, would- at once be accounted a very wild sjieeulator; whoso sanity might well bo ques tioned; and if mil tho merchants in hia. section of the. country/were to manifest a similar dispo sition for speculation, they would at onca be accounted .madmen; and all to whom they were in-' debted. would hasten to secure, if practicable;. the amounts teierally due to them. Here would be the commencement of a crisis, in theaffaireof all the: merchants, thus violating the ummutable laws of trade: and the effects of this crisis mutt necessarily be felt, to the full extent of tbeir transactions with the community, in which they hadbeen conducting tbeir business. No legislative' enactment eould avert such a crisis; and no Intel-' ligent man, profeating n particle of honesty, would be inclined to attribute to the operation of any law, such a stale of affairs as matt necessarily ensue. That-tuch a state of things pa wo have suggested, has taken place, among those engaged in the manu facture ofirop, would seem to admit of no quettion.
