I am directed, sir, to tender to you the hospitalities of the people, and of the corporate authorities of this, and our yoimg but flourishing sister of Allegheny. We have not strewed flowers in your path, nor erected triumphal arches at your approach, but greet you with the homage of grateful hearts, as evidenced •in this spontaneous outpouring of the people. lime, sir, are the tokens of that universal , regard in which you arc held, by.the free citizens of this great country ; and here you have the reward for a long lilt oftneritorious public service. _ What can be•tnore endearing to the heart of the patriot, than this exhibition of public • sentiment; than this manifestation of love for your perscin, and admiration of your exalted talents and virtues?— Like the son of Marcus Cato, you have been a foe to tyrants, and your country's friend, and that coun try nollf.tiffers to yitu, the tribute of her affection and Yon seem, air, like the _aged oak standing alone on - the plain, which time has spared a little longeriafter all its cotemporaries have been leveled with: the dust";>> but the people delight to gathee round the venerable trunk, and dwell beneath the shadow of its yet green foliage. Associated as you have been with the FATHEI or 1113 COUNTRY, partaking largely of his confidence; and deeply imbued with the lofty patriotism of hia character, it must be gratifying to you, sir, to visit this, the theatre of his early achievements. ere; standing on the portals of the valley of the Mississippi, his proplmic eye reached far into futurity, he saw the materials of that great empire, with its teeming millions that now revere and vene rate his name. Here it was that Prrividence thrice spared hie invaluable life; once on the Venting° path, where the warriors , rifle flashed in,the pan— again when his frail raft gave way and he was pre cipitated, amid ice and snow, and the raging of the elements, into the rapid waters of the Allegheny; and again on the shores of the :Monongahela, where Braddock, Balket and Perifuny 'were shot down by the deadly aim of the French' and Indians. _ . . Two horses shot under him, his clothes perforat ed with bullets, a bright and shining mark as he was, the leaden messengers were turned aside by an invisible hand, and he was saved to lead the ar mies of his country to virtory and lay deep that pre 1 cions corner stone of civil polity, without a parallel 1 in the history of the world. Here it was, that in the wigwams, and partaking 1 1 of the hospitality of .5. hingiss and Allaquippa, his heart imbibed that warm and active benevolence towards the red man of the forest, that was so con spicuous in the subsequent administration of the government.. Here it was that the influence of his great name, withoutbloodshed or the horrors of a civil war,sup pressed an insurrection that threatened to sap the founiatiOns el our beautiful political edifice—and here, s.r, he has a monument in the hearts of his countrymen, more durable than brass or marble, and which will remain steatrast so long as the cur rent of the Ohio flows on to the bosom of the Fath. er of Risers. la 1789, the first armed vessel that ever flowed on the western waters was constructed here under the direction of a revolutionary officer. She was a row• gaily, mounting a solitary ;:or,, and was intended to protect our inlant trade with that splendid donsarn terwards acquired by the wodom and foresight of your friend and contemporary, the illustrious Jcerensorr. That vessel was named iheJorin ADAM,, and if dition is to be belirived, after performing her duty in her native element here, she hoisted her sails, enter ed the peaceful pursuits of commerce, croioeil the Atlantic, passed the straits of fiihralter, wended her way up the Mediterranean, threaded the Archipela go, and penetrated to the very Dardenelles, on the borders of Asia Minor, thus carrying upon her prow, into the bosom of a despotic country, the name of one of the honored acters in the struggle fur Repub lican liberty. Look at the contrast now ! Instead of the barge and the row-gaily, in 1543, our skillful mechanics have completed, on the eery bastions of old Fort Du quesne, an iron steamer of war, that is to carry on the Northern Lakes the stars and stripes of our be loved country—and a steam frigate is now in the pro- gress of construction, which, with her iron skin, is destined to defend the honor of the American name " in every FC3 under the whole heavens." When your venerated sire, With bUffill!f: 7C..1, proclaimed Independence note, lndependencejorreer when, with inflexible resolution, be affixed his signs. tore to the great charter of our liberties, the ground on which you now stand was a barren nod nnpro ductive forest. Now, , air the swollen columns of ascending smoke," so swells the grandeur of our city. From a thousand chimneys are emitted the living evidences of her prosperity. The thump, fire, •he busy hammer, the revolving roller, all give daily, hourly proof of her rapid advancement. Here the rough, rnis-shapen elements of nature, are formed and moulded to suit the purposes of man. Here machines to mitigate the toil of the laborer, and facilitate the intercourse between the States, are manufactured with a skill unsurpasmd even in the old world. Here theancoor iforget( to give security and protection to the weather beaten mari ner, and here the shovel and the mattock, the plough and the harrow go forth to ease the labors of the husbandman. Here the hungry are fed and the naked clothed, by the evolutions of machinery, and the "potent agency of steam." To what are we indebted for all these blessings? Since the war of the Revolution, to that wide policy by which you were regulated when at the head of the Government, no base subserviency to fineign power, dictated your course; but a manly and deter mined support or thO true interests of the country. We thank you sir, we thank you with the truest friendship, and the deepest sincerity. We honor you thr the lustre you have shed on all the high places it has been your good fortune to oc cupy. We praise you for that sublimest virtue which shines in all your actions; we ace in your brow, that undaunted valor that makes you inexorably firm in the discharge of all your pubic dories, rod in your "eye that unextingu shable spark that fires the souls of patriots." Great and good citizen! venerable nod venerated man! Panegyric or eulogy, now or hereafter, can not add one cubit to your stature. Live on--live on in honor and usefulness, and when this corruption does put on incorruption, and this mortal immortali ty, I pray Gnd, that it may lie in the calm serenity of that summer's evening. when bonfires mid illumina tions light up the land in commemoration of that glorious independence, to the achievement of which your illustrious father, so largely, so eminent ly contributed!
