A letter from the National Bridge,!atesi on the 14th, gives the particulars of the march of Gen. Patterson's brigade and train to that point, without molestation. Col. Hughes' command was still there. Gen. Patterson had received a visit from a commissioner of Padre Jaranto, with propositions of p‘ice,—the Padre being tired of war, and wish ing to come under the protection of cur govern metlt. Gen Patterson coolly told the commission er that, if Jaranto wished forpeace, let him disperse his command, return to Vera Cruz, anti become a good citizen.; and that he need not fear—as no one would molest him;—adding, however, that he would hang every guerilla who should be caught. Lane arriv. ed on the ttith, with 2,'400 troops; hiFnging oceans of welcome:letters. But my joy, aftertdl the good news (runt tome, was sadly clouded by the black Fear thttt told of Mr. Buldle's death. • For thirty days before Gen. Lane's arrival, we' were here in a state of siege, and for thirty days we ' ,fought them day and nibgt. Gen. Scott left Puebla to be garrisoned by my six companies and two companies of regularsC One, hospital con tained 1500 sick. The piphlation of Puebla is . about 70,000—nearly all hostile. On the 13th of September, four thousand Mexicans arrived in town, and surrounded the castle of S. n Jose, which I command I had altogether about 300 men and four mountain howitzers. Their attacks were frequent ; and for thirty days the firing from both sides was almost uninterrupted. Our troops ma king in all about three hundred who could do duty, occupied three points, Fort Loretto, the Church of Gaudeloupe, anil the Quartet of San Jose. The two former places are strong positions on a bill above the city ; while San Jose is on the edge of 'idle city, much the weakest point, and on level ground. Neatly- all the demonstrations of the enemy were made against San Jose. Our men he. hayed in the most gallant manner, and in every instance repulsed the enemy From the 13th to the 25th, the siege was conducted by Gen. Rea, and another, with an' cu landish heathen name. •On the 25th, Santa Aline arrived, and demanded 1 from Gov. Childs ai..iiismedinte evacuation of the / city, stating that he niight march out with arms, and either-join' General Scott at Mexico, or go to Pero!. Santa Anna said in lie letter, that we were, entirely surrounded, and that he had 8,000 troops, with whom he would at once drive us from es1:0:-position. The brave old Governor did not know how to surrender, having no examples be. him, and answered Billie most dignified man ner, that he would stay where he was, that being both his desire and his duty. Col. Childs, you know, was distinguishes! in Florida, at Palo Alto, IResaca de la Palma, Monterey, Vera Cruz, and Cer- Iro Gordo. Of course, he was not the man to ler render, no matter who made the demand, nor how overwhelming the numbers. I don't know what more he has to gain, ns the Government confesses he has exhausted brevets. The demand of Santa Anna and the answer of Col. Childs, were at once comunicatedlo the officers and men at our three posts. Such a shout of exultation and deep s!eft• sure j never heard before; there was the very ex.! I tacy of tight in the eye of every man. I have no! room to give you toll particulars, and you must be parieut until you see the reports. Santa Anna with his 8,000, was no more successful than Rea • with h s 4000. Their assaults on San Jose were I kept up night and day, and every time we drove I them back greatly the losers:, Not less than four hundred of the enemy were killed. But we are not without our losses in both ktlled and wounded. Some of the best men in'the First Penn Sylvania i Res i iment have fallen. Gilchrist of Westmoreland. ! young Sam Sewell, of Allegheny city, and Corpo• • rah Jones, - of Blairsville, are no more, Capt. Her run's company fought 400 lancers, who attacked the n r mIIr re streets, r-n I thirteen of the brave Duquesne Gteys were killed, four ba Ily wounded, and Capt. Herron himself, slightly, 1 c urns to i their relief with Capt. Hill's company, and found them surroun !el, and fighting with the desperation •of tigers. I thank our arrival was just in time to save the whole co npatty from des•ruction. We kill rd large minset's of the enemy before they .wire d spersed•.,„ ; - but no number is compensation for our loss. Vfint you a list of our killed and wounded. I think you had better have it publish ' ed, so that the worst can be known! I think that ' every one of our wounded will recover; the doc tor says that he has no doubt of it. John Long• staff, of company K. and Morris Sternlen of com pany C, are prisoners; but I believe we will be able-to excbanze them before long. as we have plenty of the ehemy. Longstaff lived with me, acting as orderly, and is one of the most gallattt men I ever seen. Perhaps yon think we have had a hard time of it. So indeed we have. But danger and privation have been met with all that cheerfulness which so often keeps company with courage. The enemy cut off all our supplies, hoping to force a surrender ; but all took the mea -1 gre rations of rice and coffee. in the excess of good humor. They never could have starved us out as long as a mule was left. • • • I wrote a half sheet for the expre.sr_of the 15th. which 1 did not get off, owing to an accident that was near being serious.- A fire-in the stket (right. ened my horse; he jumped an to the pavement, and cumbling, fell flat on his side. Most miracu. lotisly, I escaped with a bruised leg instead of a broken one. In my note of the 15th, which I send with this, I tell you generally of our, sufferings and privations during the siege. We were fortu• nate in our commanding officer. Col. Childs is a stern disciplinarian—a soldier of approved gal lantry, and conscientious in the extreme. I think he was the very man of all 'Apea,in the army to defend Puebla in this long, and„fearful siege. He has spoken warmly and in-strong terms of admi• ration of the Pennsylvartiattinopr., but he has done so because his conscience toll] him they deserved every word of it: We Ail, gsailfied, because this is the first time any commanding officer has al -1 lowed himself to let the gallantry and good services of the Pennsylvania volunteers be known. Gover• nor Childs took no rest himself, and kept every body else " wide awake." He never asked any ony one to meet exposure and brave danger with out being himself the most exposed. I don't like to undertake to tell you how much we went thro', in the unceasing file of athirty days' siege. "The Elephant " was much larger than we have seen' here before. We are now through its dangers, and have time to sorrow for the dead. My own old company—the Grays—is sadly thinned. Pam „Sam Sewall, of Allegheny, I loved as if he 'Mil been my youngest brother. He was gentle, meri. torions, rod brave, and died with hie companions in a fearful crntest. We -had signal and terrible vengeance on the enemy before the scene was ended ; but all is as nothing to me, and less to the bereaved at home. Oh, let not the memory of the dead turn to dust and ashes in the keeping of our country. Captain Denny and Captain Herron are both well. Lieuts. Ferguson, Charlton, Woods, and Hague are also well, and all enjoy-the good name of soldiers to the extent of all their friends could wish. The same I can say of every officer and soldier it has been my good fortune to corn mand. Now let me say a word or two about the present prospect of peace. We have a number of rYlexi. can officers prisoners of war. They all say that peace will be made before two months-that the President and Congress are both, in favor of peace, and that it certainly will, be concluded. Today 100 lancers arrived from :the city of Mexico, es. corting Mr. Bankhead, the British Midister, to Vera Cruz. I conversed with a number of thein, anti they all say the same thing. What to think of it l do not know ;--if peace is probable, 20,000 additional troops, (and of them 10,000 dragoons,) would nullee it certain. Afier Santa Anna left here, he attacked General Lane on his way up. The General !logged him badly., Col. Wynkoop, with four companies of our Regiment, was along, and is said to have behaved most gallantly. You were anxious that 1 should know Captain Walker, and that we should like each other. • ,• • • Since we first met we have been intimate and cordial friends. In the battle with Santa Anna he was killed, and I have to lament the loss of a-dear friend. He had charge of 200 cavalry, and charged successfully 2,500 of the enemy. Alter his attack had done its purpose, he fell, covered with wounds. To Mrs. Mary Parker I wish to send my earnest and sincere sympathy. Her !oasis indeed beyond expression. Tell her that her brother, Frank H'err, is very well, and every thing that she could. desire..
