D 10 - 8 PTA:O ILE BY ELECTRIC ;TELEGRAPH. = LATER FROM MEXICO ! - Gen. Scott at the Capital SKIRMISHES WITH THE GUERILLA S 11 -PIILLADELPIIII, Sept,lo, 10.0. P. M By the arrival of the steamer Fashion, at - New Orleans, the - PiCayune has dates from Vera Cruz to the 27t1i, and from Tampico to the 29111 ult. The news by this arrival is the most important that we have received in many months from Mexico. Our army has not only advanced to the city of Mexi- co, but it has had two engagements with the ene my,'cloze -under the walls of the City, and defeated them. The Mexicans have been brought to sup plicate a suspension of arms; and Gen. Scott has granted it. The Mexican Congress has been con vened, teltahe into consideration Mr. Trist's pro position. The news was received in Vera Cruz on the eveping of the 2Gth ult., by an express courier fromrazaba,, , who brought the following letter to Mr. Diamond, the collector, at Vera Cruz. OIIAZA..II,L, Aug. 25; 16-16. The Mexican mail which has just came iii, brings the following intelligence, which I copy from the Dirio Officitil Del Gaberno. Being of so great im portancei send you the express courier, which will be with you to morrow about 12 o'clock. On the 20th, two brigades, commanded by Gees, Va. lentia and Santa Antra, went out to attack the Americans near San Angel. Valencia's Division has been c'ompletely defeated; and Santa Anna, after the first retie - banter, fell back also in disorder to the city. They immediately after this asked for a suspension of hostilities, and °fretted to hear the proposition of peace from 111 r. Trist. The next day the . Minister of Foreign Relations invited the Congress, t i rough the papers, to meet for that purpose out.. These, are the great facts which will no doubt bring peace. Another express arrived in Vera Iriz on the 20 with letters c , nraining the same news in substance, and the following trans. Lilian of the announcement of it in the Diatio Official Del Goberno: 4. On the 20th of August, Scott's troop., who in tended marching on Deoon, turned in and arrived bear linbayai As soon as the news was known in Mexico, Valencia's division went out to attack the Americans at Los Danes de San Angel, and wit cbmpletelycouted. Next came Santa Anna l with another' division which shared the same fae, After iodic fighting, the Mexicans retreated to the Capital in.great disorder; and such was the panic created by the defeat, that the Minister of Foreign Relations immediately convoked the Congress to; !take into 'consideration Mr. Trio's propositiori. A.I suspetision.oft arms was demanded by the Mexl-i cans, and granted. The Americans are around. Mexico, but bad cot entered theicity ott the 215t. 1 Such - are the meagre details which we have oft those importanf'events. No couriers from Gen.l Scott's army direct had been able to get through, l so far as we- cau learn; but from the foregoing i statements, it is manifest that Gen. Scott holds; the city of Mexico at his command. That Gen..l Scott did hot choose to enter the city is manifest.; He was doubtless deterred from a desire not to wound the pride of the Mexicans wheat upon the! eve of important negotiation's. It is now supposed that the extraordinary roar- i ier which left Vera Cruz for Mexico nu the l'Jth, a day in advance of theregularEnglish courier; was• the hearer of despatches to the British ILI iui.ster, to offer again his Mediation; and we think we may safely say that he was instructed to ito so, if pos sible, before Gen. Scott reached the capitol. We, believe the instructions were positive and no doubt they were obeyed. Haring arniolute confidence in! this representation of the acts of the English gust ernment, we think it reasonable to suppose that Scott was influenced by a knowledge ut this me-1 diction to trust once again to the efforts of Mr Trist to negotiate a peace; and so spared the Mexicans the humiliation of an armed occupation of their capital. Inf. Lily Train.—The Boletin of Jalappa s-eys that the train; after having been attacked at Cerie Gordo. retired to the plains; at the same time' the guerillas also retired. On the following day, the train -commenced marching to Jalappa, and on Thursday had not yea entered that place. Os the! 10h, it was reported. at Jalappa that theGuerillas I would attack our troops near that place. The} Guerillas are said to have numbered d5O. On the.,l9th inst 'Maj. Lally enquired of the Al. calde whether the citizens of Jalappa would coin tnit hostilities against the Americans if they en tered. Ter which the alcalde replied, that the pop. ulation was not armed, but that thete were Goer illas in the neighborhood for whose actions he was not 'responsible. On the morning of the 20th the wagons and troops entered the city. The Boletin iaysgthat the wagons are filled with sick and 'Founded On the 24th it was rumored et Vera Cruz that Jarauta had attacked the train a short distance on the other side of Jalappia; but that he had been driven back with lass. bent Henderson and the cavalry who were sent out on the 15th by Captain Wells, apprized of Maj. Lally's approach of reinforcements of the hall and shut of the Guerillas An-express has arrived at Vera Cruz from AI varatio, with information that the Guertilas had attacked that placeand killed a number of person,.
