Gen.Cadwallader was at Penile about the 20th, 1
. awaiting the arrivafof Gen Pillow.
1 The news from Mexico was rather indefinite.—
Gen. Scott had communicated with them, and said
Trist waewith him, and was authorized to
Inegotiate for peace.
s Santa Anna had vainly endeavored to obtain a
quorum of the Mexican Congress to consider the
communication of Gen. Scott' and it was supposed
. he would march into the city and secure a peace.
i Owing to the strict censorship over the press, it
was impossible to obtain a correct knoWledge of
the contemplated Mexican plans of defence4 it
was, however, understood that Santa Anna would
leave the capital about the 3d inst., to assume the
commaud of the Mexican forces. Ev ery avenue
to the capital was said to be fortified; but the suc•
cess of our army was not doubted.
If was said that Gen. Pillow had to contest the
entire route with the Guerillas, until he passed

The expedition of Corn Perry aglinst Tobasco,
had been entirely successful.
A rumor was currant at Vera Cruz, on the morn

by the Guerillae. The former, however, was be

latter.
No better proof of the prosperity of our comr.!
try, and of the West in particular, can be pre- 1
‘emed, than the state of our domestic exchanges'
at the present time. On looking over the tables in
papers of New York, St. Louis and New Or
leans—the great depots fur our European and
Western trade,—we find that exchanges on the
.11,.1,tern cities range at to I per cent. discount,
:or sight bills; and we well remember, a few
since, that a bill at sight on New York could
11, -, t be had in Cincinnati for less than 2Yi'v3 per
ccnt. premium; and in the Eastern 'cities, bills
on New Oeledis were at a considerable discount.
Now a bill is drawn in St. Louis on New York at
et- per cent. discount, and one in New Orleans COM' I
rnands per cent. premium on New York. Then
the , West was Targely indebted to the East. Mil
lions of. dollars had been borrowed, to invest in
, vild schemes of speculation; and all her surplus pro
duce, which could be sent to market, was required to
meet the demands against her. Now a more desire
state of things exists. Western men find a better

notreaders must excuse us this week—we can.
give our usual weekly review, on account of a
press of business in other directions. There is,!
however, nothing of importance to report; the
week has been very dull in commercial matters—
there have been few transactions, and no changes
in prices of consequence. The river swelled a few
inches on Wednesday. The weather has been
very warm, and people seem more dispose,: to•
