AL 117 the arrival of the steam, ship Alabama from Vera Cruz,.the New Orleans ,Picayune has advt .! ces froth the city of Mexico to the 20th June, and from taebla - to the 30th. Gen. Scott was at Puebla, awaiting the rein forcements under Generals Canwallader and Pil -1 • low. Gen.Cadwallader was at Penile about the 20th, 1 . awaiting the arrivafof Gen Pillow. 1 The news from Mexico was rather indefinite.— Gen. Scott had communicated with them, and said Trist waewith him, and was authorized to Inegotiate for peace. s Santa Anna had vainly endeavored to obtain a quorum of the Mexican Congress to consider the communication of Gen. Scott' and it was supposed . he would march into the city and secure a peace. i Owing to the strict censorship over the press, it was impossible to obtain a correct knoWledge of the contemplated Mexican plans of defence4 it was, however, understood that Santa Anna would leave the capital about the 3d inst., to assume the commaud of the Mexican forces. Ev ery avenue to the capital was said to be fortified; but the suc• cess of our army was not doubted. If was said that Gen. Pillow had to contest the entire route with the Guerillas, until he passed Cerro Gorda, where they took advantage of a de file to impede his progress, and where his loss was =I The Government of Puebla had been entrusted to Cut—Belton, of the 3d Artillery.. Alvarez was at Jalisco, on the 14th June, at the bead of 300 Mexican cavalry. The American Star, at Puebla, hays that there are three months' provisions at that place ; and that the army obtain an abundance of torage from the fields around. A Mexican had been detected by . his countrymen on the way from the capital to Puebla, with draw ingsofthe differeat fortifications around the capital.. EAGLE ICE CEILAItt SALOON. The writer states that he sees Major Gaines daily; Tickets of Admission 12 cents. • that Gen. trrea had ordered all Americans to leave the Mexican territory ; but that this order • did not extend to them. It was more generally believed, however, that, though - Gaines and Borland may be at liberty, the rest , have been re-incarcerated at Santiago. The prefect of Puebla had recently decamped for Mexico, taking with him all the funds of the city. The expedition of Corn Perry aglinst Tobasco, had been entirely successful. A rumor was currant at Vera Cruz, on the morn ing" of the Ist, that Gen. Scott had entered the Capital; and that Gen. Pillow had been captured by the Guerillae. The former, however, was be lieved to be false; and no credit was given to the latter. No better proof of the prosperity of our comr.! try, and of the West in particular, can be pre- 1 ‘emed, than the state of our domestic exchanges' at the present time. On looking over the tables in papers of New York, St. Louis and New Or leans—the great depots fur our European and Western trade,—we find that exchanges on the .11,.1,tern cities range at to I per cent. discount, :or sight bills; and we well remember, a few since, that a bill at sight on New York could 11, -, t be had in Cincinnati for less than 2Yi'v3 per ccnt. premium; and in the Eastern 'cities, bills on New Oeledis were at a considerable discount. Now a bill is drawn in St. Louis on New York at et- per cent. discount, and one in New Orleans COM' I rnands per cent. premium on New York. Then the , West was Targely indebted to the East. Mil lions of. dollars had been borrowed, to invest in , vild schemes of speculation; and all her surplus pro duce, which could be sent to market, was required to meet the demands against her. Now a more desire state of things exists. Western men find a better n,.tket for their produce; an immensely greater a -in :wit has been sold t they have purchased what and .leave their money among the .ea.31.4-h' merchants; who can give them a better rate of ili4.l4est for it than they would be able to get-at The tuitions.
