To.show the kind of victory the Whigs have

people against him, by a paper that is set doven as
"deCidedly demotratic," we must conclude that
our party is not united. The Nutivet, were rallied
for Brady, and the friends of Mayor Mickle, feel

did not work for the success of the nominee of the

This gentleman has not been blessed, nor cursed,
with a surfeit. of newepaper puffing, yet we do say
(and we think it) that he has but few superiors
on the American boards. There may 'be those
who differ with us, knit we glean as much pleasure
from witnessing a representation by, him as
we do from most stars who stop a few nights with
us. He is correct in his style; acts his parts as a
student. We are tole: (for we do not know him)
that in private.life he is every inch a gentlema
which richly entitles him to the patronage of the
friends.of the Drama.

adopted afa meeting of the clergy and laity of the
different denominations of colored citizens:—
Resolved, That the first Tuesday in May next, be
set apart as a day of Thanksgiving to Almighty
God, for the glorious results brought about by urn

BEAUTIFUL Esronaviso.—We have been shown
a very beautiful engraving of a certificate of mem

contains many splendid designs. It is upon the
whole, creditable to the order.
Mr. Meredith, Diamond, is 'the agent for the
publisher, to whom applications can be made.
(UThose who wish to purchase a coat, vest or
pantaloons pattern, would do well to 'call on Mr.
Robinson, whose establishment is next door to our
office, on Fifth street. We feel safe in recommend

None Rause roa I.IIELAND.—We are informed
by Mr. Robert H. Kerr, that the benevolent people
of Washington, Va., have sent to Michael Alien,
Esq., for the suffering poor of Ireland, dtgi barrels
of corn meal. This is truly a generoUs act of the
kind-hearted of that noble State. We tr‘ ill also

ST. LOUIS ELECTION
The Municipal election in;.)St. Louis took place
on Monday last. Whigs,Nitives and Democrats
were in the field. The , dwo, tformeriniasted before
theAlection it' loud asSanta Anna beforerthe late
battle, but they were rOuted, horse, foot' Mid 'dra
goons. The St. Laois Union gives4he following
result. Oh this' unpopular war, and this unpoputar
administration!!
ttie St. Louis Union says: uThp Demniritcy of
St. Louis serid greeting to the Democracy of the
Union :
The following is the result of the election on
Monday. MuLtatieur beats the field; leading the
Whig candidate 1493 votes, and the Nativist can
didate 624 votes. The entire general ticket is elec
ted. We have carried 6 out of the 7 Aldermen
and 10 out of the 12 Delegates. Thie is glory
enough for one day l"—Lou. Dem.
geshness of Parliet.—The nomination of Gen.
Taylor tojhe Presidency of the United States, in
different parts of the country, by political assem-_
blies of various characters, appears to us to be as
ill-timed . as it is improper. The General iastill in
the field, liable to its dangers, anti by no matins
exempt from its reverses. He is there too, the
representative of the whole people, and knows no
divisions of party. It is most unkind therefore to
draw him into the toils of party.management, and
to endeavor to enclose within a narrow circle a
man who belongs to the nation. It shows how
selfish a movement it is on the part of the
politi
cians who seek to make capital out of events,
which "belongs to all time," and in which they
have had but little share.
Let us remind these over-anxious political friend's
of - Gen. Taylor. that he is the last man in this
country Who will be influenced by hasty profes
sions of support; and experience should teach
them. that "original friends" as they are called,
notoriously fare the worst —Jour. Corn.
Good Plan.—lt Is stated in an English paper
that a company is shortly to be formed in London
for the erection of public ovens, on the principle
of baths and wash houses—at which the laboring
poor may make their own bread of any quality
suited to their means. An establishment of the
kind has been for some time in operation in Paris,
and is said to have worked most successfully.
The Nashville Union.—This ably conducted pa
:per has recently been changed from a tri-weekly
to a daily, and at the same time treated to a hand
some and becoming new dress. It is edited by E.
G. Eastman, Esq., a gentleman of fine talents, and
is unquestionably one of the strongest democratic
'papers in the West.
gjTlie tranquility of a country life, and the
absence of all excitement, greatly tend to promote
old age. There are three couple living near Mor
ristown, N. J., whose united ages are 493 years.
They were all born in the neighborhood, and mar
ried in early life. They are Grahamites, and have
lived exclusively on vegetablediet since childhood.
Chrsapeake and Ohio Canal.—We learn from
the Washington Union that arrangements have
been made by which this Canal will be commenced
forthwith, and that its speedy completion is a
question of no doubt.
War and Means of the United State!.—The
Washington Union says : " It is estimated that on
the tat February next, after meeting all the ex
penses of the war, there will probably be a balance
in the treasury of near $2,000,000.
Col. Hardin, before being killed at Buena Vista,
captured a flag from the enemy, which, with his
horse, he requested, should be sent home as a last
memento to his wife.
On Wednesdaymorning, the 1-lth ill St., Cals. II
Isttem.,' Esti ,in the sGth year of his age. His
funeral will take place on to-morrow (Friday)
afternoon, at 2 o'clock; from his late residence on
Liberty street. The friends of the family are in
vited to attend without further notice.
PITT TOWNSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOLS
An examinaoon of Teachers will take place at
the Atheneum Rooms, 3d street, Pittsburgh, ( Philp
Hall entrance,) on Saturday, the 17th inst., at 2
o'clock, P. M.
By order of the Board of Directors.
