ed patriot as ever lived. His death will be semi
bly felt in -Ohio, and his loss deeply deplored among
the noble volunteers.

ASSAULT
On Tuesday night, three black ruffians, the lead
er named Bill Davis, made a cowardly attack up
on another black man named Theodore Messick,
on East Common, Allegheny city. A gash- was
cut On his throat, which, however, did not reach
the jugular vein; and another in his abdomen. It
was thought he could not live. One of his assailants
attempted, to take him home &ter the attack, but,
finding he could not walk, dropped him and left.
They belong to Hayti, or Minersville.
The Constables of. Allegheny, with a posse of our
night watch, started up to arrest them, but bad not
found them yesterday morning.
lIACKATHORN
This unfortunate man, who is charged with the
murder Of Lancaster Sullivan, was brought back
to Pittsburgh, by High Contable Rea on Tuesday
night. He was brought from Wellsville on the
Arena. His case will come up before the Quar
ter Sessions at its present setting.
CHILD BURNT TO DEATH
The little daughter of Mr. Samuel ➢fiercer, of
Allegheny city, was yesterday burnt to death by
hex clothes catching fire, while her mother was
absent. She was about three years 3f age. She
was putting chips upon the fire when her clothes
caught.

WESTMORELAND GUARDS
This company arrived in town last night. They
came in carriages, wagons, &c. We saw a num
her of them passing up street, and can now say
that they arc tall specimens of Westmoreland sol

Gubernatorial candidate draws near, permit me,

of Pennsylvania now occupies a peculiar situation,

and our Democratic fellow citizens of the whole
union are anxiously watching to see whether the

support of Democratic principles, or whether she
will desert those principles which it has always
