The Democratic party of Pennsylvania now occupies a peculiar situation, and its .action should be directed with peat care and caution. The eyes of the country are upon us, and our Democratic fellow citizens of the whole union are anxiously watching to see whether the old Keystone will still maintain its integrity in its support of Democratic principles, or whether she will desert those principles which it has always been her glory to support and 'throw herself-into the arms of the Federalists. 'Notwithstanding the hopes of our enemies, from the result of the last election, such a catastrophe cati r easily be arrested by prudence on our part. Who—who, he asked, were, indeed. responsible' for the blood which hint been shed in this war? These religious gentlemen were the 'men. It was their speeches--their exortatiOns—their denuncia tions—their professions of the opPesition, of the American people to the maintenance of the. Texan boundary as against Mexico, which had induced that miserable and besotted nation to airplane that a war for the vindication of the honor of the United States and for the maintenance of its just rights, would not be sustained, and hence it had been that the Mexicans had rushed madly intoliAie conflict. It was the very same religions influence which induced the. Mexicans to eontlnue the, contest and refuse submission. It was the course pursued'' by such religious gentlemen which led the 'Mexicans to say, "These friends of ours in 1 the United eig r" States will paralyze the ban their 'own gov ernment, and we will wring m them , a favor able peace!"
