CoXTISKED. ovr aa to tlie method of procedure. One pl.ia is to break square off, giving over llie u?e of the. vie thing at once and forever. Another way is to diiuinicti gradually the amount of tobacco nsed daily for a few week, unlil you get down lo a minimum quantity ; and fin ally to none at all. A third f.l tn la the etilstitutioii, fur a time, of enme other nervine in place of the tobacco. Kach of the above methods has its adherents among medical ineti Some there are, who advr.e-ite the firnt method as a gen eral jirinc'i lc, w hether the suiject be the vict'm'of tobacco, alcohol, or opium ; but we thii.k they are the minority Prof John King, of tl-.fl Eclectic Medical C'dlye, Cincinnati, O., thus advisrf : 'SnufTi rs and smokets may stop at oi.ee, but old chewers should gradu ally lessen their quids ; and at the sarae lime acquire the habit of chewing cham- ii i!i liters, boi!Cet loaves, or the iu l.tr bask of the wild liickoiy IUv. George Trask, of Fitchhurg, Mass, who may justly be called the thirf apottle of the anti-tobacco reform, rcomm(iids that when one slops chew ing t ubac-o, he lake, after each meal, or ofti'm r, r.s rur.i-li gentian roof, coarsely ground as would amount lo the bulk of,f a common quid of fine cut or cavendish, jl and chew it well, swallowing the saliva. ! He ('(Teis as a ifason lhat gentian is a'P Ionic, ot.e of the blittr tonics, and the rpe cf it iu the way and rrminer indica ted will do much to neutralize and allay the taste fur tobacco. It is also a nerv .i:ie, and I a- a good iffect in bracing np the rdaxed nervous system, and thus p venting, to some. ixte::t, the awful filing of goneness, as he calls it, to which a tobacco chewer, retiring from business, is stibj-rt. And another ihir.g it does p rhaps not so unimportant a matter either, as it might at first blush seem lo be it employs the moui.li and beguiles the attention. Dr. Wilson of Owego, N. Y., profes ses to have found a remedy for tobacco chewing in the leaves of the common red plantain. He says that after chewing llifge f(r tLree or four days and d swallow- 1 ing tlm juico, wliic'i is liarnilo??, if will be impossible to use tobacco without fickcniiig. Tliofe of our readers wlio liave neen Mr. rnrtonV article, "Will it pay to smoke ?'' in TLc Atlantic Monthly, will remenibor Low lip quieted Lis nerves with whiflty when lie quit praoking. The r.ervonp excitement continued but a few days, and lef s than one bottle of whisky was required. We have thus p!veiT t!ie oplnltsns aul BtippeEtions of others as far as we have been able lo colle-ct them, aelecting thope which seemed to be of value in this con nection. Wc have thought jt our duty to give to users of tobacco, who wish to reform their habits, all the information and assistance in our power, to enable them to dt so with the least amount of f ufivring and inconvenience, and with the greatest certainty of success. But iu re gard to the plan of substituting some ether nervine for the one withdrawn, al though it may be of advantage in some instances, we must say, that upon the whole, we have very little confidence in it Every dmg baa its own specific eff ect on t'uo human system, and no other can be a complete substitute for it. Opi um-ratrrs, upon relinquishing thfir habit are eonietiraa given alcoholic stimulants. Fucli, though, would rather have one grain of morphine than a demijohn of fourth-proof brandy. And an old tobac co chewer, under the same circumstances, would rather havsa quid of fine-cut than a barrel of chamomile flowers or a ton of gentian root. From all that we are able to learn the habit of chewing tobacco is much more flitTicuit lo reform than that of smoking ; hut in most instances smoking can be substituted for chewing, without serious inconvenience. If a man who smokes wishes to rid himself of the habit, let Lira dimiiii.-h week by week the number of cigars or pines smoked daily. If he smoked regulaily six cigars a day it does not seem to us that it would be any rery great hardship to bring down the number to five. After smoking five cigars daily for a week, let him reduce the number t3 four, and after the lapse of another week to three ; and so n, reducing the daily allowance each subsequent week by one ci:ar, until he comes down to nuuc at all. If the subject be a chewer of tobacco instead of a smoker, let him quit chew ing and take to smoking for a month, or such length of time as may be necessary to make him feel quite as comfortatile as l.efote tiie change was made. From this point let him proceed as iu the first ex ntriple. Hut suppose the offender chews and emi.k'-s both. This is truly a bad case, still not quite desperate. To such a one we should say, First stop your smoking ; then, after a few weeks of chewing only, 4joit that and substitute smoking in place of it. This accomplished, you can pro ceed as in first example. TO BE CONTINUED. California farmers cultivate tea, coffee, cocoa, opium, grapee, the mulberry, wheat aud cotton, and raise sheep and cattle. Getting into debt is like a mouse in a trap ; very easy to get in, but hard to get out. f- Hr 3ri?
