BY JAMES COULTER tAYABD, M. 1). CONTISUBB. TUB KIPENBS. The question of expense presents it-Ft-lf to us uudt-r I wo aspects ; first, the direct expanse ; that ia, the cost to eon umer, to individuals. Second, the hi direct pence, that is, the loss to the couutry itf the capitnl and labor absorbed in the .r-u.tivaf.i-n, mautifacturc, and rale tf tobacco, whieh might be more benefi cently tirj'ioyrd iii other pursuits, and the laso to the country and the woild at large of the thousands of acres devoted to its production, wh'cli m'ght be d-:vo ted to lite production of breadstuflfj to feed the iift.tioi.fi. This last includes also the impoverwhment of the land de voted to its cultivatioa, which is greater beyond C"mparirm than that resu'ting from any other crop. To the above may be added the We of property by fires originating from lighted cigars and pipes. We have neither the tim nor the space here to enter into elaborate calculations with regard to the coft to the people of the Uuited States of the tobacco they raise and consume; we will, therefore, avail ouiSi Ives, to some extent of the results of the calculations of others. The Rev. Dr. Hawcs, of llartf ird, Conn, in a fi'tmon preadied against the use of tobacco, estimates the direct expense to consumers at S40,00,000 annually. The people of the city of New York, accord ing to his estimate, spent SI 0,000 a day lir cigars, at a time when they were spending SS.500 daily for bread. These otimates were made years ago. Our . i population lias increased rp:uiy since then, and it is agreed on ull sides that the consumption of tohacco has increas i d even more rapidly. Uesides that, to bacco has advanced in price andgfw pays a duty, which it did not their. These figures, then, have all been largely increased, and we therefore think it en tirely safe to put down the sum now rpint ly our people for tobacco at $50, 000,000 annually. What an enormous sura to spend for the gratification of a morbid appetite 1 What a waste of property ! Worse than wasteJ ; fcr it i not only destructive of property, but, as we have seen, of life, health and morals as well. How many churches and school houses would this sum build ! "Give me," says the Kev lr. Berkley, of L'irgan, "every tenth pipe in Ireland and I will erect 100 school houses, and spend on each .500 (52,500) ' The same illustration will ap ply with equal force to our jwn country, were the money spent for tobacco appli ed tit this dirceimn V( might hae a school houee on every street And if we had more school houses we should need i'ewir jails. We pay annually to all tLe lawyers j in the Luted States S35.000 000 ; for maintaining our criminals, Si 2,000,000 j j and to ministers cf. the gospel SG,000,-1 000 ; but we pay nearly as much fori tobacco as f r the whole. We are a law- j abiding and justice-loving people, but we ! pay for tobacco one third more than we j w t i pay our attorneys at law. ne are a moral aud an order-loving peojile, but we pny for tobacco m ro than four times as much as we !v f'" maintaining our . ! Christian peoiila, ; t. . criminals. We are a yet we pay fcr tobacco more than eight times as much as we pay for the ministry of the gospel- of the Sun of God! In the paragraph next before the last, we have given a hint as to what inaiijjj cent reaults might be achieved were the money directly epjHit'by consumers of tobacco app'.vd to more beneficent uses. 13tlt wLo can tell what might be accom plished were the capital and labor em ployed in its cultivation, manufacture nd sale, also applied to other purposes ? 'cw have any adequate idea of the num bcr of persons engaged in these pursuits. How many are employed iu the cultiva tion of tobacco we cannot even guess. As to the number employed in its man ufacture, the following statistics will give a faint idea : At Manilla one cigar fac tory employs 7,000 women. Others there employ from 3,000 to 5,000 women. There are no manufactories of cigars in the United States on so large a scale as this ; but we have some tobacco factories which count their employees, both male nd female, by hundreds. If the men who now hoe tobacco were put to hoeing corn ; if the men employed in tobacco factories were put to building railroads the women transferred to cotton looms. and the boys sent to school ; if all the tobacco plantations were turned itito whep.t farms, and the capital absoibed in the manufacture of and traffic in the eed, invested in any other commodity you may please to mention save spiritu ous liquors it would add to the wealth and property of the country immeuse sums annually.
