A CMnaaiaa's Funeral 1.1 CHOW CHIN BllllrU IN STATE EY HIS I.OVI.NfJ Clll.rTliY.VKM ClltlOI S CER- KVuMKS l. T1IK LI RIAL SEItVlCR. The unique ceremonies tit a Chinese funeral were performed on the ground adjoining Captain Harvey's laundry, at Jklleville, N J., yesterday. The dead man was one Li Chow Chin, a recentU imported wa.-heimtn, who fell a victim to the severity of our climate. Ilia lat ter days were passed in profound com muuion with an ugly wooden god, to which he remained desperately loya! in spite of the most zealous effort of a Christian miuister to redeem Li Chow Cbiu from heathenism. As ho lived he dil'd. and his funeral yesterday was at tended by 2:20 Chinese, the total number of Captain Harvey's washermen. Dress ed as usual, iu wooden shoes, flabby pan taloons, loose shirts and far-extending pigtails, they assembled in the spacious ironing room of the laundry, and in their maimer were sileut and demure while awaiting the lemoval of their departed brother. When all was ready they mo ved gravely, and, like a religious order of Chinamen, down to their country man's grave in the field below. They surrounded tbe grave and each threw a piece of lighted paper upon the corpse when it was laid to rest. From the paper funeral pile a dense volume of smoke arose and the spirit of Lo. Chow Cbiu was believed by his brethren to have ascended therein to the clouds. As the clay was being heaped upon the Chinese corpse little sticks and pieces of nickel - currency were mingled with it, and money was distributed among the strangers who came to witness the cere mony. After the funeral the Chinamen's sup per leli rang, and the repaired uproar- ously to their chopsticks aud unseasoned tea and rice. N. Y. World. Sewing machines are run by water- power in California.
