Letter frm ThsnpsonUwrlt FATAL ACCIDftMT FROM COAL OIL. TaoarsoarbwH, July 22, 1972. KJilor Selitl : Our usually quiet little towu was thrown into a fever of excitement on Thursday afternoon last, by the occurrence of a most terrible ac cident, occasioned by the explosion of a coal oil can, resulting iu the death of one of tho most kind hearted and loving lit tle girls we ever knew. The particulars of this sad affair, as uear as we could learn, are as follows : Miss Katie Mills, aged 1 1 years, seeond daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Mills, while attempting to make a fire in the cook stove, to beat some water, and the wood uot being very dry, picked up the coal oil can aud thought she would put on some oil to make the wood burn quick, aud at the same time supposing that the fire was all out of the stove ; but, alas ! the moment she dropped the oil on the wood, it blazed and caught in the can, exploding it and throwing the contents over her clothing near the bottom of her dress, which immediately took fire. She endeavored to put out the fire at once, but soon founii it impossible. She called for help. All the family were absent except her little brother of six years, who, being near, attemp'.ed to pull hei to the pump, iu order to pump water on the Uames ; but he could uot bold her. She ran to tho yard in front of the house, aud being all on fire and exhausted, fell to the ground near the front gate. At this juncture a neighbor lady, Mrs. Ships, seeing her on fire, rushed to her rescue, and threw a pieco of carpet over her, putting out the flames She then took her into the house, but, alas ! too late. Dr. Greeuleaf, was immediately sum moned, aud did all iu his power to relieve the little sufferer, but of nn avail. She lived only one hour and a half then the ingels took her to her heavenly home. The accident occurred about 2 o'clock Wheu Mrs. Ships reached Katie, nearly all her clothing was burned off, except I'er shoes Sirs Ships bad her arms badly burned in her efforts to extinguish i he flames. Katie's little brother was also considerably burned. Mr Mills and two of the children were away from home at the time the accident occurred. lro was immediately dispatched for, but arrived too lite to see her Katie, alive. Katie was a member of the M. K. Sabbath School of this place, and was a kind he.-.ited and ever dutiful scholar. She was loved by all who knew her, and her untimely death will be mourned not nly at the family circle, but bv all her 1 liii-nds, both old and young. The funeral services were at'etided on Sunday by a lnrge concourse of friends. The services were conducted by Pev. J 13. Shaver, pastor of the M. E. church of this place, who delivered a most pa ruetic and excellent sermon from Job 19 : 2-5. '-For I know that my lledtemer liveth." Alter the sermon he gave a warning address npou the dangerous use of coal oil, which was well received. It might be well for us to meution the fact that this is the third fatal accident which hits happened in the building in which Mr. Mills resides, by the use of coal oil, and we hope tlie people ot ) horn pson town will now lake warning from this sad occurrence, and not at tempi to kindle fires with (his dangerous 'duid.
