i.c'.uijw." FARM AND HOUSEHOLD. . tlBCBS 19 THE SIIS OF CATTLE. A Correspondent of tbe Country Gen-tlc-man y: I "would - to E R that tbe com mon gad fly (CE-ems low's) i severe torment to all kinds of cattle, e pevially in tbe wooded or limber district. Ou our western prairie we are troubled to tome extent, bat in tbe opeuing !be cattle nffer much from these plago.cs Mr. i. E. B. is wrong ; the (Etlrut Loiit d' not, at doe the CEttrut eji. drposit ii ova or eggs, which, if unmolested, re main until lb i.illnwing Spring, when tbe full grown m.tggot must, for its owu safety, seek a fresb lotne, or like the foetus put ibe proper time of parturition, die. Now for my remedy. All persons at all acquainted with stock, will uot ice that the bot fly looks, as riual, only for suit eble parts in the front, or parts within reach of the mouth. Vh 1 Simply from instinct, for the bot can only be propagated by being taken ii.to the atomach of the hurre, w here it rrmaius. as the cattle maggit does in tbe tkin, uutil fresh quarters are nccefsary, at a longer tvtidi'uce in the stomach i death. Uoisee, like catt.p, suffer more in the timber than in the open country, and are little troubled when kept in the sta ble and w II and carefully groomed. whatever of the egs may be adhering to tbn hairs of nich a boie may be re moved by rubbing and easily by the t-rlge of a ki.ife. This is the only rem edy for l ots for once in the stomach, there lh-y remain until ready for a new life. None bnt quacks attempt to remove them ; no . medicine, not of sufficient trength to kill several horses, would dirdodga them from the coating of the stomach or in any wise seriouely inter fere with tb'-m Tbe milk and molasses1 and such noneonee as I have seen rec ommended in the paper is ridiculous. There is a much better chance to des tiny tbese pests when in tbe skin, and a much easier way to prevent them from petting there. The same most wonder ful iniii,ct guides the gad fly of the bo- ! it:e ; they seem as though they knew of the rough tongue he possesses, with which, if within his reach, he would lick off the deposited egg, and so they select Mich parts as are out of the reaeh of the tongue ; aud where do we mof t nay, only find them! Along the back aud behind tbe ebou'ders. What theu are we to do 1 Why, examine on every op fOJtouity tbe paits and destroy lhe em bro maggot, which is easily done by touching each in turn with n strong solu tion of catb-'lic acid. Better still is tbe fol lowing; SuMimaled sulphur 1 ox, and pulverized charcoal $s, given occasion ally as a doie, will entirely prevent the eggs from lintching ; and if batched, if tbe system be impregnated by sulphnr they will die the callle being, if proper care be taken of tbem, benefitted by the remedy and by no means injured. In this I am backed by Guntber. Simonds, G. II Dadd aud others. IT HEX WHEAT SHOULD BE CUT. There has been some diversity of opinion as to the best time to cut wheat, judging from tbe common practise of farmers. It is generally cut when dead ripe, or at least when tbe grain has be come bard. This is no doubt an error, and onn of more importance than many suppose. It should be remember ed that wheat is composed of gluten, starch and bran Gluten is the nour ishing quality of the grain, makes the fllour stick together in the bands of tbe baker, and gives weight to the grain and there is the greatest quantity of gluten in the grain just when tbe straw is yellow two or three joints from the ground, the head turns downward, and you can mash a grain between yonr thumb and fiuger without producing any milk. It may therefore be set down as an indisputable truth that eveiy day the wheat stands after this stage of its ripe ness, the gluten decreases in thick ness. We give these facts in time that tbe farmer can take advantage of them the present season. Grrmnnloicn Ttlrgraj,h. Rfmuving Ixk "Host can I take ink out of a carpet P Asks a corres pondent. If freshly spilled, sponge np all you can and put cold water on re peatedly, taking np with the sponge as much as possible. Then rub tbe spot with a little wet oxalic acid, or salt of sorrel, and wash off at once with cold water, and rub on some harubnrn. Bb TtttB to YoLftSKLF If a man will only- start with a fixed and honora ble purpose in life, and strictly and per sistently attempt to carry it out to llie beet of bis ability, nndismayed by fail ure or delay, tbe time may l-e long in coming, but come it will, when the pur pose will be achieved. Rather corpulent old lady : "I should like a ticket for the train " Booking clerk (who thinks be will make a joke) : "Yes'm; will yon go in the passenger train or in tbe cattle traiu T" Lady : "Well, if yon. are a specimen of wbat I shall rzpt-rtence in tbe passen ger train, give me a ticket for the cattle train by all means." In a law-suit, the other day, between two members of the same church, the counselor for one of tbe parties suggest ed that the brethren ought to defer their differences for adjustment to the bigb court above ; to which tbe client respon ded that the ''same idea bad occurred to him, but there seemed to be an insuper able obstacle in tbe way he couldn't contrive any vay 1ogt hit laicyer there !"
