Professor Agassis says tbat all the ma terial on which agricultural progress de pends are decomposed rock, not otnucb thoe that uudeilie the soil, but tltose on the anrfaee, and brought from a consider able dn-Unce, and gronud to powder, by the rasping of the glacier. Ice, all over the continent, is the agent tbat In ground oat more soil thin all other aen ciea put tip-llirr. The penetration of water into the rock, fr.t. rnuning water and baking sum, have done soim-tliing I, ni ih (rlncitTH m.ne In a furmeT flirt" the whole Unit, d Sta'es was covered with ice etveral buudred feet thick, and this moving from north to aouth by the tropical warmth, or pressing weight of the ice and mow behind, ground the rocks over which it pissed into the paste we call soil. These maws or ice can be tracked as game is tracked by the hun ter. He has made a eiudy of them this country as far with as Alabama, but has observed the same phenomenon, pat - ticularly in Italy, lu re among the Alp glaciers are now in progress. The stone and rocks ground and polished ly the glaciers can easily be distinguished from those that are scratched by running wa ter. The angular boulJeri found Jn meadows and terraces of risers notretcli ei by water can be accounted for only in this way. A Recipe For I'reseriug Ilaius. The STRirua lini The Gerin.au town Ttbgraph has the following: Every gardener knows that this is a most destructive insect among melon, cu ctttnberand other young vines, sometimes damaging the crop rciiouslr. Many rem edie have been suggested, some of them no doubt, good in their way, but troub lesome. Now we have tried for several years a remedy which has proved, with us, a complete success. Ia stead o( aim ing lo drive away the iusect by soot, ashes, etc , we pet it, or rather furnish it with food better than the young and cucumber plants. We sow around each hill, at the time of each planting, a few radish seed, and, coming up about the same time, the tops supply pasture for the bug which it much prefers to the vines. Lettuce will also answer, but the radinh is rather liked the bef t. iVhilc our viues are untouched by making this little provision for it, the young radish tops are completely perforated. Should this fail which is seldom the ease, and has never been with us sprinkle the vines with a solution of whale oil and water. No insect but the curculio can stand this. Where this preparation is not attainable a weak so lution of carbolic disinfectant soap will answer as well." ..a. i Oats for Lamus. The importance of having lambs ready for market at as early period of the season as possible, is a matter which every farmer who lives in the vicinity of laipe markets understands, or at least ought to. It may perhaps not be known to all farm ers, that lambs are able to eat oats when from three to four weeks old and my experience has been that there is uo provender with the nse of which I am familiar, that appears to have such im mediate and salutary effect upon them. All that is necessary to be done is to moisten the oats and place them in a trough raised about six or eight inches from the floor, aud where the old sheep cannot get at them Those who are sceptical in regard to this matter, can very readily test tbe value of this sug gestion on a single lamb or a pair. Salt and Ashbs rou IIorses. Those keeping horses should, twice a week, throw in a handful of salt and ashes. Mil them by putting iu three parts of salt to one of ashes. Ilores rel ish this, and it will keep their hair soft aed fine. It will prevent bots, colic, &c. A little ground sulphur mixed with salt and ashes, and given once in two or three weeks, is also beneficial. All do mestic animals will be tbns benefitted. A western editor speaks of a cotem porary who is "so dirty that every time lie goes up stairs there is a rise in real estate. ,rtwr, (C-otliiug. CLOTHING! Choicest Styles of the Season.
