Some time ago sentence of death was pronounced by a State Court of Texas, against two Kiowa Chiefs, Santanta and Big Tree. " The Universal Peace Union petitioned President Grant, and Gover nor Davis, of Texas, to spare their lives, and commute the sentence to an impris onment for life. Such a punishment, tbe Society believes, is more dreaded by tbe Indians than death. The Society's ef forts were heeded.
