Court. The attendance of people at
Court last week was large. Quite a num
ber of cases were continued till ucxt term.
The business finished was of no general
intcicst to the publio.
Seed Time. Owing to the continued
nius farmers are considerably behiud with
their plowing. We fear that much dam
age has been done by ploughing ground
when too wet. Wet JjIjtciii is far worse
than late sowing.

TlIE Ifurrislury Tttryraj'h says that
James Prophy, in company with two oth

the depot on Sunday. Prophy is a runa

McAlistersville, and the Mayor committed

Something New. James II. Simoct
has purchased the right of this county
for the sale of Sbalter & KayV Patent
Harue Fastner. It is simile in its con
struction, easily fastened and loosened,
entirely dispenses with the use of a strap,
aud is perfectly reliable. Persons who
have used it say they would not do with
out one. Call at his shop on Pridge street,
aud examine for yourselves,
Pennsylvania State Temperance
Union. Rev. G. D. Chcnowith, one of
the Corresponding Secretaries of thi6
praise-worthy organization, has traveled
six thousand miles in its service; made
one hundred and City speeches; procured
th rec thousand six hundred and seventy
four names to the temperance pledge, and
formed fourteen county organizatioLS,
auxiliary to the pareiit society.
We notice that many of our shade and
fruit trees in town are infested with a
green worm, varying in length from two
to four inches. We noticed a pear tree
in a yard on Main street that has been
tripped of svery leaf the fruit alone re-
niaioing. Many of our beautiful shade
Lrces have been made to suffer the rava
ges of this worm, and our citizens should
be on the lookout foi them. The ouly
remedy we have heard of is to catch and
kill them.
How to Keep Potatoes. A corres
pondent of the Scientific American says
that he has tiied the following method of
keeping potatoes for years with complete
success, though in some instances the tu
bers were diseased when taken aut of the
ground: "Past over the floor of the bin
with lime, and put in about six or seven
iouhen deep of potatoes and dust with
lime as Lsfore. Put in six or seven inches
of potatoes and lime again ; repeat the
operation until ijl are stored away. Oue
bushel of lime will do for forty bushels
of potatoes, though more will not hurt
them the lime rather improving the flav
or than otherwise."
. Temperance Meeting. There will
be a meeting of the J nniata county Tem
perance Union in the Court House, in
Mifflintown, on Friday, September 13th
at 2 o'clock and at 7 P. M. The meet
ing in the afternoon is to be a general
business meeting of the Society, and al
members of the Executive Committee are
earnestly requested to be present, and also
delegates from all the Township and Bor.
ough organizations, Good Templars, &c.
It is expected that matters of very grave
importance will be before the Society, and
a full attendance of the friends of the
cause of temperance earnestly desired.
