    HUMOROUS.
The Watch Trade
—, , —o—
:Old Davis; of Ossipea—the,well known
shingle and clapboard autocrat of thirty
yeas ago—had a dognamed Watch. The
dog had become old and a unisan6f.
Davis had 'threatened often to kill the
bruit, and had as often relented. One
day Sim the Concord peddler,
drove up to Davis' store, bat Davis did
not woos to buy anything.
"Can't I sell you a clock P I've got 'em
es cheap as dirt, and real good ones.„
"I haven't got the mosey."
Drat the money! 111 take a fair ex
change of anything."
Davis scratched his head, whereat
, Brown continued;
"Come, well have a trade somehow.—
You've got to have one of my clocks.
What have yon got to exchange for it?"
"ice got nothing hut a watch."!
"Eh !—a watch ?" cried the peddler
brightening up. What kind of a watch ?"
"Tain't, of course, a very good one, or
I wouldn't want to trade it off."
"What kind of cases ?"
"I can't say much for the cases,
butt.huinsides are in good order, and it
mule tMI. It !et you know when eatiC
times comes, sartin, ;
coo trade!"
-1 . 1 I give my watch for one or your
clocks, anti call it a bargin without any
ifs or ands."
"Done I" said Brown. and he selected a
steeple-topped Connecticut clock. and
brought it into the store. Now where 'a
your watch ?"
Davis went to the door. and whistled
and called—" Watch ! Watch ! here old
fellow, yon'r wanted 1"
The wretched old dog came in with a
bound.
"There's tho watch, Brown. You'll
find his 'Wards perfect. and he can run
like Sancho and alien it comes meal time
if he bon'i let you know it , ram mistak
en in him."
The peddler gaped and staggered, and
he said somet hint; not quite proper to ears
polite • put he d not back down. He on
ly said mas he hitched the dog to the axle
tree of his wagon. and prepared to drive
off: "Somebody'll pay me for the clock
before night."
Anil I opine that there are hundreds of
people to-day in that section of New
Hampshire who have a firm belief that
the: helped to pay old Brown fur the clock
An Apology.

The editor of a Western paper once
gave a notice of a ball, and happened in
cidentally to mention that the dancing of
Major Heeler's better half was like "the
caverting of a fly-bitten cow in a Mil of
cucumbers." The fact that the editor had
• not been invited to the hall may soinwhat
detract from the value of the smile,
while at the game time it accounts fonis
eitablishlng the figure. The Major, ac
companied by his better half and. a six
shooter, called on the editor to complain
of the poetical nature of theimage. On
learning that the lady was the one he
had desrcribed, the editor besought her to
raise her veil. She did go, adding. "Now,
sir, I expect you to apologize." "Apolo
gize !I should rather think 1 would," was
the answer, as he seized his hat and left
the room. The astonished Major rushed
to the window, "Stop, yon air, you havn't
apologized :" "All right, I'm going to
do it in a minute ?" "What do you
mean r shouted the Major accentuating
the note of interrogation with a pistol
bullet. The answer was wafted back from
round the next corner—" Can't you see
that I'm looking for that cow !"

Oneof our Meriden Bank Presidents was

Tn Cooperstown they tell a story of aci
English joker who once visited Fenimore
Cooper. Cooper was then the most con-
spicious man in the town. One day.
while Mr. Cooper was dining with the
Englishman, he poured out some native
wine—wine from grapes raised in his own
garden. 'raking up a glass and luok'ng
through it with pride, Cooper remarked,
"Now Mr. Stebbins, 1 call this good hon
est wine." "Yes, Mr. Cooper, I agree
with you, it is honest wine—'poor but
honest.' " Mr, Cooper went on telling
his "Nun" stories.
North Adams has a tailor long known

examined them and replied, "Yes, yes ;
the knees are the best part of them."
The reverend gentleman saw the joke
smiled blandly and gracefully bowed
himself out.

Intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptitins of the blood, such as the scrofulous
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have lurked in the system
fur years, coon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cares, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous disease.',
Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive diso
orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches,
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores. St.
Anthony's Fire, Rose or ErysiPe
ltus, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald
Head, Ringworm, and internal Vl
ecrations of the Uterus, Stomach,
and Liver. It also cures other com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such as Dropsy. Dyspep
sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease,
Female Weakness, Debility, and
Lencorrlicea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
It is an excellent restorerof health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feet better. and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. The system moves
on with renewed vigor and a new lease of
life. -

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color..
A dressing
which i s at
once agreeable,
healthy; and
effectual fo r
preserving the
hair. It soon
2 . `eitaris ' faded
or gray hair
to its original
color, with the
gloss • and freshness of gouth. Thin
hair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the •hair where the follicles are. .de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and '-
decayed ; but such as remain -can be
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity,. so that a. new,
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi-
tient, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the-hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma ! -
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
delitenous substances. Which make.
some preparations dangerous and inja-;
rions to the hair, the Vigor can only
benefit lint not harm' it. If Wanted
merely 'for a HAIR - • DII.ESSMG;
nothing elso can be found SO desinible..
Containine , neither oil nor dye, it does'
not soil wliito cambric,: and. yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it d rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.
