A•grintiturai. ar.49.14.11eZZ1NL19" Cial733. tairo row T 132 DIZOCIIAT.3 The Farmers' Club in Hill neighbor hood met March 14th, pursuant to ad journment. Phineas Smith chosen Presi dent, pro tem. Comparatively few pres ent • weather unfavorable. Best mode of applying manure was dig eussed at considerable length. All favor ed getting barnyard or stable manure on the land in time and manner to save the back as much as pOssible. If drawn in Abe winter as fast as made, to be TM in heaps; if not drawn till spring, spread from the load. Some favored plowing under; oth ers put on and harrow in for cora ; the difference depending upon circumstances. All favored, fall plowing as both facilita ting spring work and giving a better crop. Grass seed will also take better. Depth of plowing—sod, 5 inches, other ground deeper, even to 10 inches. Adjourned to meet March 21. Subject: Relative profits of raising grain, and keep ing growing stock and cows, and making butter, including returns from milk in calves and pork. A Stone, Edwin Hill, and C. Smith be lieved in the latter—had tried both. Gil bert Johnson believed in' the former; Thought as good stock could be raised here as anywhere, and if farmers in these parts have that kind of stock, buyers will find it out. J. Wadsworth ' believed in dairying; but thought better . proftta arose from turning the labor_ of the whole fami ly to account, and in one channel. S. T. Scott wondered if they had taken into account the broken health of the Wife, in too many instances. - Jesse Stone thought men might help more about working and packing batter. J. Tewksbury believed in that, and had set the example ; he was proud to state that batter of his own working and pre kparing had giyen good satisfaction in mar et. Was glad to bear Jesse avow such sentiments, and thought some farmer's daughter will yet be glad to have him " practice what he preached." Mr. Tewksbury further said be bad been thinking; bad thought more that night while listening to what bad been said, than for a long time. A. Stone said that was what was want ed—the object of the Club. When their brains got fairly to work their hands would work-more effectively. J. Wadsworth believed in mixed hus bandry; said that Susq'a county is fast becoming one of the first dairy sections of the country ; but grain and young grow ing stock must be raised ; that the tlivis ion of our soil and our farms into hill, side hi I and lowland, is such, that it is hardly practicable, only in exceptional cases, for any farmer to practice exclusively either the one or the other. S. T. Scott believed many poor cows are unwittingly kept, even tp old age; said it had been his prac:ice for 20 years or more, to have nrilk the year round, if pos sible; and in order to do it, together with other circumstances, had milked a good many different cows, and the milk had been thoroughly tested by itself; sup posed at first that if a cow bad been kept till she was of middle age, or more, she mast be a good one ; but soon learned that was not to be relied upon ; that if she gave an average quantity of milk, she might pass along in the crowd with fair credit to old age, and yet be worthless for batter; and that milk which will not pro duce butter, with fair treatment, is nest. to worthless. Seasonable Hints. Plant a few rows of peas at intervals of ten days apart throughout the month. You can thus continue thesupplyfor fatn, ilynse or for market far into theSnmmer. Sow radish seed weekly, so that you may have them crisp. If yon have celery plants grown, and of sufficient size, set them out. Trim off the old_ wood from gooseberries and currants; dig in around the bulbs some well rotted manure. If you desire to form new beds,, insert your crittingslen or twelve inches apart, in rows two feet apart. The Cherry and White Grape Currants are the best. The, Houghton and American Seedling Goose berries never mildew. Finish up all•the preparatory work in the flower garden. Have plenty of roses, especially the ever blooming sort, cut back well at planting. The China sorts bloom all Summer. Transplant hardy an nuals, but if the , nights are still cool, keep the tender ones under glass. Set out bulbs of Gladious and Japan Lillies. If the soil of the borders is,. poor, fork in some rich compost. k. you have not" pruned your garden fruit trees, and if they really need pruning, attend to it once. If your trees received from the nursery are shrivelled, bnrythem root and branch, until the bark becomes plump. If any have started in the pack= age, cat them back severely. Clone may be cut if the buds have not started. Graft ing may be done as soon as the buds 'be gin to swell. Root grafts can now be planted in nursery rows. Old orchards cdn be rejuvenated by generous cultivation and manuring. Feed your horses regularly, and work them regularly, allowing them long noong. Bed cows that are near calving, freely; give roomy stalls; a good sunning daily, and some roots if possible. Encourage milk sceretion in new mild heifers by milking thrice a day. Give ewes at yea°. ing time warm sheds and sunny yards. Be on tit, look out for chilled or Deble lambs. cl.bitertisements.
