The subject of this notice was born in
BroOklytt, Susquehanna county, Pa., on
the 3d of August, 1831. It was his good
fortune to have virtuous and intelligent
parents, • who labored to instil into the
mind of their son 'those noble principles,
and thafdemire for kno Med ge,•so striking
ly manifested during his brief but Lonora
ble career.
The rudiments of his education were
received at - home, and at the district
school, which afforded but few facilities
to aid the ambitious youth in his efforts
'to ascend the ladder of learning. Desir
ous of obtaining a more. liberal and thor
ough education than could be obtained in
the schools of his own neighborhood, he
entered llarford University as a student.
Here as - might have been expected of
one gifted with superior mental endow
ments, he made rapid progress in his stu
dies,-gaining the confidence of the Facul
