Caw* of Fertility— Amount of 'Cfops Produded—
Practical 'Evidence. • . ,
• it it certainly one of the most. extensile fertile tracts,
roan almost level, position, and suitable condition for_
pleasant farming that we know of this sMe of the west
- ern prairies. We found some of the oldest farms appa
rentlyjnst as prxietably productive as when first cleared
of forest fifty or a hundred years ago.
The geologist. wonfd, soon discover the manse of _this'
continued fertility. The whole country is a marine de
posit, and all through the soil we found evidences of cal-,
careens substances, generally In the form of indulated
caleareons marl, showing manycllstinet forms of ancient
shells, of the tertiary formation ;and this manly substance
is scattered all through the soil. hi' a very comminuted
forni..and in the exact condition most easily assimilated
by such plants as the farmer desires to colt irate.-
Marl, in ail its forms has heel' used to fertilize crops In
England. from the time it was occupied by the Romans;
and in France and Genemy a marl bed is counted on as
a valuable bed of miners, that can be dug andscarted
and spread over the field. How much more valuable then
it must be when found already mixed through the soil.

Having then satisfied our mincleu ith the ease. they

idenco of fertility of a coil which in our situations, hat , I
fag the tame general characteristics or at least appeamn
ces, is entirely nnremmierstive except as its ,productive

Is promuled by artificial fertilizatihn.
r A few words abeut the quality stud value of this land
for cultivation. of which we have some strong proof. 1
Our first visit Wits to William I). Wilson, Pranklin'
township. Gloucester county, who purchased some eight
miles north of Ai ilville, about three years ago, for the
purpose of establishing:l steam mill, to work up the tint
i beer too lumber, to send off by the new railroad, as *ell
I as the firewood and coal, for which he built a track a
mile and a half long. Ile also furnished sixteen miles of
the road x hith ties, and had no doubt made the mill
profitable; though his Main object was to: open a farm,
taring become convinced that the coil was valuable for
J cultivation. In this he has nut been disappointed, as
gottie or his crops prove. For instance, the second time"
of cropping. 206 beshels of potatoes on one acre, 'worth
oucents a bushel in the field.. This year.- seven acres,
j without Manure, produced 7.5• G bushels Groats. In one
i field, the first crop was potafoes, planted among the
f roots , Ind yielded 75 basheir: The Peewee . were - dug,
and wheat WWII, and yielded If bushels; and the stubble
turned under and sown to buckwheat which yielded 33%
bushels; and then thegionn'd was sown to clover. and
'timothy, which gave as a first crop 21( tonb per titre.
The fertilizers - applied to these crops were, fasd, . ashes
fromelearings ; second, 225 pourids of superphosphate
' of-lime; third, - 200 pounds Peruvian guano; then 50 bush
els of slacked lime has been spread upon the clover since
it was mowed, and turned In for wheat.. .'
Mr. Wilson's growing crops, abd the wheat stubble of
the present season. all indicate Walled as, productive an
any pp art of the State. - '
' At Mary

Beier:abates south 'of Mr. Wilson's, we were sopartleu. '

we stoppml to inquire of the hired man bow it was pro
