They Were followed by Engine Company No 8, drawing their machine by hand. The Company Is compwed of boys, from 12 to 16 years or sgo•and notwithstanding they have been organized but a few days, and had so little time = roam for the celebration, therwere not lOW d their elder brothers In appearance and drilL Their rig is somewhat Zoller° in style, and is v • n eatd becoming. No an . 2-was out In full force, and we nevereaw them look as well Be they did then. They had so little time to prepare for the celebration that they could not get entirely new Unifoll3lS, hit were oblige d i to make the beat alterations passible in their ol d. We think they sneceeded adm ira bly and have now a neat and appropriate tig. Their splendid engine was trimmed with evergreens and flowers and drawn by fonr horsealed by as many colored men. The com pany Is composed of mechanics and working men, and in potht of bone and muscle cannot easily be beat. No 1, their engine beautifully trimmed, gnd drawn by horses, led by members of the company, brought up the rear. The company wore an entirely new rig—by all odds the handsomest and neatest ever seen In Montrose. We cannot eiescribe the uniform with justice to the picturesque appearance it gave the company. Too coat is a union between a red acket and blue shirt, the bosom of the latter being jest visible in nett and buttoning up to the throat, while the coat is left open jest sufficiently to display its tine velvet trimming, U. 8. button's, and neat plaited blue bosom. A red fatigue cap, with the name of the company In gilt letters upon the strop in front, a tasty belt around the waist, and black pants, completed the attire. The procession marched to the Fair Ground—{the fire companies renaming to the village and parading thmugh the principal streets, preceded by a splen did Drum Corps)—ahem the Declaration of Inde pendence was read by W.H.Jessup,esq awl the ora tion delivered by Rev. J. 0. Miller. The crowd was so dense that we could not get within hearing dis tance of the speaker's stand, but those more fortu nate pronounced It a master piece in its line. At Its close the soldiers were invited to seat themselves with their wives and sweethearts at the tables, which were spread beneath the trees, and partake of the bountiful dinner prepared for them by their friends. The ladles of the Aid Society performed the part of table waiters, and supplied the partakers of the feast with all obtainable delicacies of the sea son. We believe the soldiers were well satislied with the quality and quantity of the viands. When wo left the grounds the tables were tilled almost to overflowing, and we have heard it stated that the whole number fed was over five hundred 'Every effort had been made to render the display of fire-works In the evening a grand affair; but un- fortunately they became damp, and refused to dis play when It came their turn to perform. A few tire wheels, roman candles and rockets and two very handsome pieces—the names of which we can not tell—were all that would go. We must, not forget to mention the passage thro' this town df the remnant of the defnuct C. B. A. It was a comical cavalcade and made considerable sport. A company of fantastics mounted on horses, guarded the wagon train of the bogus confederacy. The train con'isted of one crazy vehicle, in which were seated two forlorn looking individuals in fe male attire representing—we suppOse—Davis and his wife. An Independence Ball at the Keystone-wound rap the festivities of The day. We did not attend the party, but we learn that , the company were highly rcspeetable and that the ball was all that it should be. As an example of the amount of business done by the hotels and salopne, we will mention that the enterprising and loyal proprietor of the Keystone House—himself a returned soldier, and crippled in his country'd aerviee.—recalved over CM°, while two or three of the saloons averaged $B5O each. Taken altogether the Celebration was a LRCMs. There has seldom if ever been a larger assemblage of people in our town, and the great majority were young men and women. There were very few, com paratively, who could be called " old folk," and the streets, stoops and steps were lined with yentlf. fel, healthy, happy faces. There was never a celebra tion or public day, when half so many people of all classes and conditions assembled together, where everything passed off as peaceably, and where there was so little (In fact not any) fighting or disturb ance. We are glad it was so—it speaks well for our brave raveled heroes who helped so largely to make up the assemblage. 5312. $115,66 50 1,00 10,00 $105,60 5127,16 91,50 Anburra.-31ontroae was the grand feats] center of attraction for our people on the " Fourth," but my protes.lonal duties called me In another di rection, and a few of my sights and reflections may prove Interesting to the readers of your local col umn. Two emotions were prominent in my mind while travelling. Gratitude for the luxuriant harvests that whitened the adds and sweetened toil, for there is nothing better than success to cheer the hearts of all faithful efforts to succeed; and the growing crops of corn, oats, flar,s and potatoes every where added their testimony to prove the skill of the far mer and show the goodness of the Lord ; and won der at the progress and improvement manifested all along the way since nest I beraerud it, throe years ago, and amid war and itommotion, too. At NewLaceyville the " oil fever" has somewhat affected the people, splendid visions float in their future, and fabulous fortunes beckon the adventur ous on to appropriation " Excelsior." Here mech. aniarm has found a quiet retreat, but an appreciative public followa it with abundant employment—they measure surrouudieggrain fields by the hundred of acres, about tour-fold greater than any preceding year—may their blessings be what thrift and enter prize deserve—for this part of our country abounds inpatriotism and undeveloped wealth. In South-Auburn I saw whole orchards stripped of their fruit and foliage,. and, upon inquiry, found that a new kind of worm or eiterfillar infested them—amounting to a fall half-bushel per tree. They are rather formidable looking, two inches or more in length—yellow and brown colored—at any quick noise they let go their hold and fall to the ground, but soon return again, refusing even to be burned by flames of burning straw kindled for their reception upon the ground. At Black Walnut, on the morning of the Fourth, I mingled with the gathering Sunday Schools and their friends in celebrating Freedom's double anni versary, and a delightful time we bad. The grove was cool and shady, the waters sweet and retresh ing, the provisions good and abundant, the ,young folks loosed strong and pretty, the music, Matra mental and vocal, was stirring and charming, the speaker patriotic, instructive, and amusing, while the pleasant intercourse of friends and kind hospi tality towards strangers, which I personally acknowl edge, bespoke both happy hearts and ready hands to elevate the fallen, and wield our nation's destinies for good though many coming years. The Declaration of Independence was read by Rev. Mr. Legg of Sterling-vine. Elder T. F. Clancy of Elk Lake, a visitor, was invited to address the Sunday School, whose principal argument was, that, although woman was an active agent in effecting man's fall, yet she was chosen of Clod and man to elevate him through the medium of Sunday Schools especially, and otherwise generally. After a sumptuous dinner Elder D. D. Gray made a patriotic speech, showing bow we had whipped the South, as it was our duty to do; for their good and God's glory, and remained so strong in all essential resources that we had given to a race the right to themselves and the fruits of their own industry ; and were fully able to foot the bill of expense. He was followed by Bro. Arnold in an effective speech, but want of space forbids that I should further de tail the proceedings of thLs delightful day, except that all was Interspersed with sweet singing, social greet ing, and pleasant harmony generally.
