gvgvicoltiiint: . iro - p•dresslaff Meadows. -We need more expeilinenta m tOredressing grasslands. Wemust, however, remark at the outset, that scattering straw in buncheti r mailer& in heaps; aro3. compost in clods, is not top-dresie ing, or at IeUS . .not = deserving of the.. name...-- The , eflkacy.tof spreading manure finely and evenly-on the surface is well known. If done earlyln autumn, it Is found to be more efficient than When performed at thebeginkingor daring the winter; and it is moire usefal In winter throe ] when delayed till 'spring, ' , There is-more than' ono reason for this - differggice. One, a, well. known one,. Is the solutiOn ifod ~. washing down into the soil el the enriching parts. If the .worki is demo early, more time is allowed for the .full completion of this process by the whole rains, of autumn, winter, end spring. Aeother . reason Is the protection it affords to grass plants from the cad Mad - sweeping winds by thecovering spread. above the roots: When the top-dressing is scat tered early In autumn, the protection and enrich ing together, and the tendency of the top-dress ing to preserve moisture" on the surface; causes immediately a rank growth of. green grass; and this rank, green - growth, will often render the dressed eenUon,conspicnotes from the rest when seen frota ''..a :long ;- distance, This increased growllizot onlyzezders the plants stronger at the root; but gives them Jan additional covering againgt thecold weather. So lee, bite little tuts been done in the way of ' toredressiliag with other substances than fertili zers. A few experiments have, however, proved tharniere mulching—the covering of thesurface for the purpose of protection, and for giving depth and strength to the roots, has accomplish ed Important regatta A. IS Dickinson's -mode d d of spreaffin a finely pulverized stratum ' f earth. over Mira ows by irrigating with muddy wa ter, is known—by - which he has obtained three of hay and upwards per acre from his largeineadows. A. striking experiment is men tioned in the Gauntry Gentleman. p. 10 of current volume, by a correspondentM Pepperell, Mass. He spread at the rate of about a thousand bush di of -puck per acre, which bad been somewhat enriched by. thomannre of swine. This would form a Coating:less than half an Me thick, if i spread perfectly even. The result of this top dressing was two crops of grass the same season, botliamotmting to five tons per acre. The ex periments which we need in relation to this sub ject are the application of various substances to the =face of meadows, In order to observetheir various remits. These substances mustbe caps bleof fine pulverization—for if thrown down in lumpy or heaps, so as to be several inches thick • ha one place and - entirely absent in another, they cannot accomplish a great deal of good. Saw dust, which is abundant in some places, ma ,y be speed frith great facility, but its light and po rous nature would probably render it km valua ble than art equal coating of strong soiL It ie, however, well worthy of experiment. Pine peat or muek, dry enough to form into-powder,might be spread with nearly as much facility, and would doubtless prove more efficacious. Lastly, and much the best of the three, and only inferior to manure and compost, is alluvian,or the wash ings of strong; ertile soil. Being free from atone, and of a fine even uniform texture, it may be spread evenly, when dry enough, without diffi culty. The best way of spreading it, unques tionably, js to adopt the Dickinson mode of car rying ft over the surface by streams of water, after excessive rains. There is another material which may he used for this purpose, the value of which experiment only can prove—namely, linear coarse sand, or dry quick-sand. The writer once owned a meadow, a part of which was annually overflowed by a turbulent creek, which left at every flood a thin coating of fine sediment. This sediment did not contain any unusual amount of fertilizing matter, for it was merely the washings from the country above. Bat the result was an annual and rennin crop of at least three tons of hay per acre.; while the remainder of the meadow above high-water mark, although possessing apparently as fertile a bail naturally, yielded a varying return of a ton to a ton and a hale There may be many instances in which farmers could imitate this top-dressing by applying the different substances already meptioned to their meadow lands, du ring the cdmparatively leisure season of win ter.—County Gentleman. Clean Culture. Clean culture is a term that most of farmers either do not 'understand the import otor do not care to practice. To such I write this no of im portance. They will see if they practice. On my tour to the White Mountains in Au gust, I paid particular attention to the treatment which was bestowed upon apple trees. In most of the towns which I passed through they paid little heed except to trim them, which in some cases was done with an axe. The general result was a light crop of apples. In two towns they adopted what I term .clean culture, viz: the second year after they were transplanted, and each year , afterwards, they ploughed both ways amongst the tree.s, thoroughly moored, and kept down the weeds. By that means the root shot down below the plough , and the ground under the trees was in good condition. This year the trees bore fall and the apples large.— On inquiry amongst the apple dealers what lo- cality they received their best fruit from, theyall without exception named this Imlay. To those who need further proof, they need not go further than the pine forest to see that the God of nature practices the same, or arrives at the same mode only in adifferent way. The foliage of the pine is shed and drops to its roots, covers them and rots; no weeds find place there and if you take pains to dig through that covering you will Arid the soil thoroughly pulverized, and lighter than by any means which art has found as yet. But the. reader will say, mulching with straw would answer, the same purpose. I have no doubtit would, but perhaps it might serve to harbor the mice. One orchard attracted my attention by .the smooth and thrifty appearance of the hark. On inquiry of the owner, he partly attributed it; be sides clean culture, to a practice of putting cow dung in the crotch of the tree every spring. The same principle acts on my own grounda, In re gard to other crops this last observation may seem to.beneedless to the mere reader; but if hewill stroll amongst the farmers, or those who pretend to that honorable title, but whom I des. *gnats dB plodders of the soil, he will find that every acre they till is covered with weeds left to scatter their seeds. • S. P. .11LannatnT.—/fass. Ploughman. The Onion Mr. 3. B. Ives, of Salem, Mass, in a communi cation to the Country Gentleman states' that he bas known fields that produced last year $1.609 'Forth of onions per acre, and which sold at that puce in the Boston market, Ile raises gohd crops of well developed bulbs on lands formerly used for potatoes, corn or mangold-wnrizel, but more dressing is required when onions follow other crops. For enriching the soil for the crop on light lands green cattle manure is preftwrot placed on thefield in small heaps in January, so as to pulverize by the action of frosts, and spread at the time of plowing. To succeed in onion culture, he remarks wire we have frequently obkerved and what hut often come under our own experienee,„that - " the best seed of the bet variety, grow and ripen in the best manner," should be used. Malay failures occur from the use of poor seed. Mr. Ives says that onions in tended-for seed should be kept at a temperature as near the freezing point as possible. The va riety in cultivation in the vicinity of Salem is the "Dtuaver's oval onion," which he says produces more in weight and measurement than the flat kinds, . etrmr.
