EMI r iggritniturat ER ArSite Independent Republican. Cheese Factory hi Springville. .-Nr. Editor As you have a desire to keep your ;Cadent infoimed of any Improvements place to the County, it occured to me that, we,. -not generally known that Judge Packer,ef Manch Chunk, ismaking preparations to !Met I Chem Factory on his property in Sptitioille, in which it is intended to commence operetiona, on the first of May next. The busi ness of , making ebeese in Factories is of recent origin, but 'the . success of the system has been SO great, that, at the convention of Cheese Manufacture's in Western New-York, held at Rome, on the oth of January, 1804. represent atives were present from ea Factories, located ba 13 counties, who reported from 150 to 1000 cows each, the whole number being 36,753 cows. It is believed that a better quality of cheese can generally be made at the Factory than in fami lia, that It is quite as fine as the best, and there fore above the average of that manufactured in small parcels The Superintendent makes it his business to see that all parts of the work are properly, erformed. His interest and repute duo are at stake, prompting him at all times to dab* beet,' Me-knows that neglect or mistake& will tiotc beJoierated, and the desire to satiset , f: - persorts Interested, in order to secure their pat- XOI3IOS, stimulates him to make every exertion to build up and sustain a reputation for a supe rior article. He has every convenience at hand 3W manufacturing to advantage, and makes the business a specialty and sole employment. In the cheese manufacture under this system, a high deform of skill is expected, and jealous and interested eyes are daily watching and noting every mistake. Uniformity and tine quality are therefore likely to obtain, and whatever pro grew An be made towards improvement, will naturally develope itself more rapidly here, than among persons scattered over a broad extent of country, and who are occupied with a variety of work so as to have little time to speed in the Improvement of any one particular branch.— Factories have acquired a high reputation for fine quality and uniformity. Such large quan tities-of cheese, uniform in size and quality, will usually command a higher price in market than that of single dairies, from the fact that in the latter an allowance is always made for unequal and imperfect cheese. And Factory cheese gen erally sells at a price above that of single dairies, equal to the whole expense of manufacturing., Another important advantage in this Union ar rangement, is the relief from the drudgery of cheese making, and the constant care and atten tion necessary in properly curing and fitting the cheese for market. It would be difficult to esti mate this in dollars and cents, and it is believed, that the old method of cheese making has done more to injure the health of women in dairy districts than any other cause. It is not my ob ject at this time to go into a detail of the process of cheese making at Factories, more than to Say that the milk is brought to the Factory in the Morning and evening, at a certain hour, in cans provided for the purpose, then weighed and credited to the owner, who receives the avails in proportion to the quantity supplied, after de ducting the er v enee of manufacturing, say 13 cents per lb., and some Incidental expenses for rennet, bandages, &c. The Springville Factory consists of two build. ings, the manufacturing helve., and the curing - house; the former being 94 feet long, and 26 feet wide; and the latter, 84 feet long and 26 feet wide. The capacity is for 100 cows, but probe buy not more than the milk of 2.10 to 800 will be supplied the ensuing season. When it is seen that the Factory is an advantage to the commu nity it will be the precursor of many others in this County. And I would call the attention of the farmers, more particularly in the neighborhood, to this mtetesting subject.. For singular as it may appeltr, it Is built, and mainly intended for their benefit as well as to introduce a new arti cle of trade into this County, which is 4 so well adapted for the purpose; as it is well under stood that the liberal proprietor has no other end in view and conld apply his resources to a much greater pecuniary advantage elsewhere. " SEIM:I3W r n SAWING WOOD WITH HORSE POWER.—A Sub scriber in Darlington, Pa., writes: "I saw my fire-wood with a circular saw, driven by a two horse rail-way power, and I find it such an ad vantage that I never intend to saw any more by hand. It pleases the women very much to have plenty of seasoned wood, particularly when baking buckwheat cakes^ We are ac quainted with a young man in Cayuga Co., N. Y., who was accustomed to do all his thresh ing with a flail, and sawing wood by hand. At our suggestion, he purchased a two-horse threshing machine end wood saw. When he performed all this work by hand, he was obliged to work very Ilan! all winter. Now he does his own threshing and wood-sawing, and thresh es for some of his neighbera He sawed over IWO cords of wood for them during the past year, besides doing all his own work. Be finds much more time to rest and rend, and not half the amount of bard labor that was required When be threshed and sawed by hand. lie saws, usually, three cords of hard wood, twice in two, per hour, running time, This practice of making the horses do the hard work; Is worthy of almost universal adoption.—Ameriraa .Agrieulturigt. WHAT LB Ali Lveu OF RAIN?—The late week ly return of the British Registrar-General gives the following interesting information in respect to rainfall :—" Bain fell in London to the amount of 0,43 inches, which is equivalent tt) forty-three tons of rain per acre.. The rainfall during' hist week varied from thirty tons per acre, in &lin burgh, to two hundred and fifty tone per acre, in Glasgow. An English acre consists of 0,272,640 square inches; and an inch deep of rain on an acre yields 6272,640 cubic inches, of water, which, at 277,274 cubic inches to the gallon, makes 22,62 . 2-5 gallons; and, as a gallon of dis tilled water weighs 10 pounds :he rainfall on an acre is 226.225 ,pounds avoirdupois; but 2,240 pounds are a ton, and consequently an inch deep of rain weighs 1004)93 tons, or nearly lel tons per acre }or every one hundredth of an inch a ton of water falls per acre." ll e any ag riculturist were to try the e.:periment of dis tributing artificially that which nature so boun tifelly supplies, be would soon feel inclined to "rest and be thankfuL" FENCE POSTS TOP END cr.—C. Frovines, Ind , writes: "Same strange ideas prevail here in regard to fence posts. Intelligent farmers tell me that posts will last as long again by being well seasoned before they are set, and the top ends being placed in the ground. And I see all the fences built in that way." , Ele asks, " Will some one explain why P"—There is no strong evidence that posts thus set will last longer than 11 they were set with the top end up. Until the evidence is produced, no reason need be sought why a post will decay sooner when it is placed top end up, than when it is set the other way. To test this, we once set fence posts alternately top up and top down, in the same fence, and there never was any preeeptible difference in the time of their decaying.—Ameri ean Agriculturist AnumcrrE FOR Poison.—Dr. J. Edmonds, a prominent physician, writes as follows to the London rinks: I enclose a simple, safe and ac cessible prescription for the whole range of acid corrosive poisons, which, if promptly Used, will almost invariably save life. Mix two ounces of powdered chalk or magnesia, or one ounce of washing soda, with a rant of milk, and swallow it at one draught; then tickle the back of the throat with a feather or finger so as to produce Vomiting. Afterward drink freely of milk and water. and repeat the vomiting so as to theirdly ,Trash out the stomach. Any quantity of chalk .or magnesia may be taken with safety, but soda In large quantities is injnriona I may add, that the narcotics are excepted. Milk is an anticline for almost' ell the poisons, and especially if fol lowed by Vomiting. As. Ezsituszorr Wzrzt. EOT&TOEEL—.-Issac nicas, Loug island, writes ssfollows : "A neigh bnr last spring cut out all the eyes but the strongest one, and planted, the potatoes In a row, giving them the tame' chaneell as ;others ,planted in the usual Way.
