- Of late years' says the Cenhsrg, frequent articles have appeared in the New York jodr :Aids, particularly in - the columns of the.Even inePost, in reference to various points of Orthography,. which, though anonymously published, are known to prcceed from the pen of a gentlemsi' of this city, Mr. Edward 8.-Goald, whose general contributions to the press have been neither few noTonimportant. - In the, last number of the Rome .journal we notice an article from this source, in which the changes made by Webster in orthogra, phy are presented at a glance. As these than ges have been atid still are- the subject of much discussionole reader cannot but be obliged to the writer for this convenient ex hibition of the whole matter. We print from a copy of the article revised by the au thor: - 4 4 Webster's orthography has been - the stumbling block of the dictionary through its whole history.-` That is the feature of • the work thattites provoked the greatest hostility --sigainstit; -that is the feature which has. ran i..Acrid this work - really and permanently ihleyoes; and that is the feature' for winch no adequate excuse can be put-forward. That peculiarity has impedef the sale of the work 7 • by thousands on t housands of copies, and yet ._.that peculiarity is so insignificant actual dimensions that it bears about the same pro. portion to the 'whole work. that 'a • mosquito beari to the bulk of a man he is tormenting. T'O exhibit the real magnitude of tins petite ;misers before the eyes of our readers, so that ,they-ourt weigh and measure it for themselves, we will nowspread the entire monster in our anions—hands,. feet, head; organs and di mensions—and we can imagine their excla mation; 1 ." PINE Gaara, Susq. Co., Pa., April 0, 1559. MESSRS. Earroas :—Where is the "one column or more" devoted to-agriculture, in your paper, that you promised your leaders not long . ago? :Where-are the - farmers of Susquehantut County, that they do• not res pond to yifur invitation to write for :be farm ers' column Alive none of them anything to write, id regard to any of the various af fairs of a farmer's busines? no "expetience " to tell for the benefit of the inexperienced ? In short, isn't there any one among Ahem that knows anything that any one else does not know, and that would be of benefit to the community at large?. If so, why do they not write, that tht4 knowledge of one may become thelnowl ge of all, ands pub lie benefit?, Seth have been some of my reflections, as I have looked for the agricultural column in the .Repihliean for a tew weeks past,. with the hope of' finding some instruction from some of the intelligent farmers of Susquehan na County. Thinking that perhaps -every one might be waiting for tome one to begin, I have -ventured. to introduce the -subject, hoping thereby to call forth the opinions and exerience of others, marttmpable of impart ing instruction on a subject of so great im portantv... Although it may be a "self evi. dent truth that all men are created equal," as far as their " inalienable.rights" are con cerned ; it is.equally -" self evident," that all farmers are not equally intelligent. and suc cessful in tbeir business. •As an evidence of this, observe the great diversity of opinion and practice, in' the cultivation of any one crop. Take torn for example,-- as that has been suggested as "something to • write about;" one farmer spreads the manure on his corn field, another puts it in the hill; one uses unfermented manure, the other wants it " welt rotted " before applying it, to the crop. Some advocate the new-tangled notion of lev el cultivation, while others adhere to . the -•‘ good old way " of `-:billing up scorn," and ploughing deep between the - rowe •' the rea son for the latter practice, as given by a farm er(?) not long since, being, " the roots of the corn growing between the rows take up ton - naucli - of the richness of the ground, which is needed by the corn." Absurd •as_are the the. ories of SQ called farmers, every man !thinks his own way the right one, until he gas rea sons for adopting a different course; This being the case, let farmers who eart write; write; ana give their theory and practice with their reasons, aud•" compare notes;" give the results of this and that mode of cul tivation &c.- In that way all who " take the papers," can be g aining some useful .kpowl edge of practimigriculture. Although I do not profess to he a farmer, but only a learner, yet I am willing to give my opinion on the .. subject of raising corn, and give what - ( co nsider one of the best meth ods of securing a good crop. If any one has a b et ter plan`; let him make it known to the publie _through your . " agricultural column."- Select a piece of-greensward, and if not al. - already well manured, spread on a good coat ing-of manure fresh from the barn yard and stables—if drawn and spread on in the win ter or Nei V early in the spring, 111 the better. It should be done.long enough before phiugh ing to alloW- trcoosiderable part of the (ero iziog properties of the "manure to" soak" in to the soil. Plough the ground when it is 'dry enough to'work up mellow; turn ocer the turf well, so that it will not need plough ing again, and when it is dry and warm enough for corn to grow, harrow the ground mellow without tearing tip' the turf, mark out the rows both ways across the field, and plant 'your corn, covering it about one and a half or 'two inches deep. To prevent the depredations of" wire worms" soak the seed in a solution of saltpetre for twelve hours be fore planting. As soon as the rows con be plainly seen, go over the field both ways with a good cultivator and hoe and cultivate sutiently to secure the desiriei object, which is to keep out the 'weeds and keep the ground loose and mellow. As to " billing up corn" you needn't do it unless you want to work for nothing, for you have no-good reason to believe the corn will ever pay you for it: Now Messrs. Editors and readers of the Republican,l have hastily given n3y plan of raising corn, which you can have gratis. I do not pretend that it is - the best plan, but a very good one, end one that pays welt for the laborexpended. Let others give us their views on the subject; and if any one wishes for my reasons for my plan of cultivation &e. I am ready to give them when. cl . 3lted for. But for the first I think .I have occupied my share of the " farmers column." Famcs. IMPROVING OCR litanwsrs.—The article on roads in the January.number of the Gem esee Farmer I like very much. Year's ago we tried small stones, putting those on top that Would break easiest to the size and shape of a goose egg, taking special pains where the wheels run ; but it was too rough. They would not pound as easy as limestone. We find we can - gravel eight inches deep and draw a mile for one dollar, per rod, and thus snake a road A No. 1. •We sometimes turn pike one year, and early -the next summer put on ; from ve to eight inches of gravel.— We lay our roads well up, first making them as narrow and rounding as we can comforta: blv UM • and allow no water to stand at the sides. The beat road I ever saw is the one running thrimgh• Weedport to Auburn—a blue hard gravel on top of plank.
