"The Jlural A'eui Yorker talks to the farmer and farmers' lioys as follows : If discontented farmers, farmers' wives, noun and daughters, who think the delights of city life something worth realizing, could walk through our streets to-day and read ono-thousandth part of the misery and apprehension that haunt the hearts of all classes, and are making lines on their faces, they would thank God for the peace and seclusion and abundance gathered In the gardens of their homes. Thousands of men and worn on are at the beginning of winter suddenly thrown out of employment! Few, comparatively, of these havo aught laid up in store. Youug women flock through tho streots with restless, euger, anxious eyes, with lips quivering with fear lest they fail to obtain employment that shall give them food and shelter. Boys and girls of the country I be grateful for plenty and shelter. Yon will, perhaps, never know how to value it uutil you want and canuot get either. How many of those in tho city are country-born ; and how many would gladly go baok to the home steads for refuge, and yot many not have the means to get there ! Farmers, thank God for the harvests, and that you have un sold food for your families! You have reason ! Hols lu Horses. The complete tneflicacy of tho various popular panaceas for hots in horses may be better understood when we come to know something of tho nature of these persistent parasites. They are not worms, but larv ; of a rly, and are possessed of remarkable powers of endurance under adversity. The uioyt insinuating substances are but as milk and honey to them, and in an instance iccorded a colony of them attached to the stomach of a dead horse were in no way inconvenienced bjf an hour's exposure to a bath of spirits of turpentine. But when whale oil was poured upon them thoy let go their hold nnd died almost instantly. Now, whale oil beina thus iudicated as an effective dose, and being aperient in Us action upou the horse, would seem to be the remedy that should be chosen before any other. At le.ist it might be well to have some experiments made and tho re sult carefully noticed and made note of. An Early Opinion of Railroads. An old copy of the English Quarterly Review of tho year 1819 contains an ac count of a soheme for a railroad, on which it is propowd to make carriages'run twice as fast as stage coauhes. The editor evi dently failed to appreciate the idea, or to believe in Its possibility, for ho comments upon It thus wise : We are not partisans of the fatastio pro jects relative to established institutions, and we cannot but laugh at an idea so im practicable as that of a road of iron upon which travel may be conducted by steam. Can any thing be more utterly absurd or moro laughable than a ateaui-propelled wagon moving twice as fast as our mail ooaches? It W much more possible to travel from Woolwich to the arsenal by the aid of a .Congrove rocket. To Bleach Cotton. A very good way to bleach cotton is to soak it in Uuttermilk for a few days. Another way is to make good suds, put from one to two tablespoonfuls of turpen tine into it before putting the clothes in. Wash ns usual, wringing the clothes from the boiler, and drying without rinsing. By using two tablespoonfuls of turpentine the first sud on washing days it will s ue half the labor of rubbing, and the clothe will never become yollow, but w ill remain a pure white. Cure, of Animals. Keep fattening animals fully fed, but be careful to vary the food suflicicutly to uausea (r si appetite. Hogs should be fed on cooked or soaked corn, or com meal, almost entierly towards the last days of their fattening. Throw ' i ma and ashes, in small quantities, n the tUors of the pens from time to time, and occasionally feed a little sulphur. Youug animals ought Dot to be made teudt-r by too olose housingjand should le ti fat ed gently and with familiarity. A Word to (lie Hoys.
