Anion) tho loading towns of our Com monwealth, in tho old town of Lancaster, characteristic of mental and moral advance ment, in her ciUzonsnwl institutions ; but of slow progress in the line of maim factory. Within the past year, however, a now lifo seems to have inspired its capitalists, and they begin to move out from their haunts of ease and secluded retirement. On the first Monday of this present month, the City set a mile post iu her history, by re spcotfully throwing open to their citizens and tho public, the doors of one of the most elaborately arranged and commodious hotels in the state. For no less than a year, has this great building proved ma terial for idle, ns well as, more sincere speculation among the peoplo and papers of tho place. It is being conducted by Messrs. Wilsons, who are New England men, and who know how to entertain their guests to the full credit of the House, the honor of the town, and the happy satisfac tion of patrons. In evidence of the respect to deserving representatives acting in tho interests of her peoplo, and common hu manity abroad, this Uotel will be known as the "Stevens House." A Watch Factory is also rearing its hoad orf a commanding eminence, on tho grounds to tho south of the City, to be known as tho " Adams and Porry Watch Factory," who, with othors of its artists', are men of acknowledged ability, coming direct from the great watch factory of Elgin, 111. This week, the City is to Introduce to its streets tbo luxury of street car riding. The track having been contracted for early in tho season, was to havo been complotcd by Nov. 1st, but from tho amount of work required, it was found necessary to make u change of dato for completion. The Teachers' Institute was held in the Public Hall of the City, last week, (Nov. 12th) which was an occasion of intense in terest. Fulton Hall being crowded to its utmost each day and evening during the week. Nearly six hundred teachers re ported themselves present. No better proof of tho intellectual progress of a country need be given, than was manifest ed on the occasion of this institute. That Lancaster is tho centre of colleges, schools and mental culture in the State, is uaquesWoaed. K. Lan., Pa., Nov. 13, 1874. Fatal Surgical Operation. A Pittsburg paper says : Some days since one Mrs. Ford a resident of Johnstown visited the office of Dr. A. G. Walters of this city, having with her a son about nine or ten years of age, who was suffering from an immense tumoi that had grown upon the left sido of his face and neck. The tu mor was of the size of a man's slouch hat, and its weight and pressuro caused a dif ficulty in breathing and was cudangeriug his lifo. Surgeons in Philadelphia and elsewhcro had been visited, and whilo they had pronounced death inevitable from it, uono were willing to undertake the risk of its removal. The mother stated that she was unablo to go to any further expense in tho matter, and Dr. Walters seeing an in teresting case and being willing to attempt the removal of the tumor if it was desired, volunteered to stand the expense. He ac cordingly had the mother and child cared for in his building on Boyd's Hill, formerly used as a hospital; and there the operation was performed. Dr. Walters called to his assistance Drs. Cable and Wallace, and the mother insisted on being present. Chloro form was administered at firs t, but being found that it had the effect of making tho 'patient's breathing more difficult and dan gerous, its use had to be abandoned. The operation progressed slowly under the skill ful handling of Dr. Walters, but the boy did not have the vitality to bear it, and a cessation of the work was several times necessary. Once he got so low that it took half an hour to revive him, and then only by the fico use of stimulants. The tumor was removed, but the patient died soon after. On the discovery that the child was dead the mother became crazy with griof, and attacked the physicians. Dr. Cable had to run from a pair of shears w it'll which she struck at him, whilo Dr. Walter Was com pelled to call on the police. A large crowd of persons gathered about the house, of courso, with sympathy for the mother, and, for some time, much excitement existed in the neighborhood. Coroner McCallin was sent for, but upon learning that competent physicians had been attending the caso he declined to hold an Inquest. It is proper to state that before undertak ing the operation, the surgeons warned the . mother of the boy that it was dangerous. TlViUiruiljo" The Detroit Free Pi ess says : Wednesday afternoon a half-druuken man named Croy, living in Canada, was wandering around the Potomac, accompanied by a big dog and having lota of money. The next morning he was found in an alley, sleeping a drunk en sleep, and his !og was keeping watch over him, and would allow no one to cnine near until tho man shook off his sleep. The dog had been stabbed twice with a knife, and there were two extra hats iu the alloy, showing that thieves had come to rob the mau, and that the dog had fought them off. tTCeo. W.
