8 Ijc Gttmcs, Nfto !3loomftcli, ). A TERRIItLE FLOOD. Over Two Hiimiercd Lives Lost. Despatches from Pittsburg, dated tho 27th ult., Bays : "Rain commobcod falling about half past seven o'clock last evening. It rained hard up to five o'clock this morn ing. The worst damage was done at Bucber's run, in Allegheny City, where some twenty houses were swept away. The latest report from there is that from sixty to seventy dead bodies have boon found. At tho Union dopot almost the entire drain from tho hill came down direct and was reinforced from the railway tunnel, which conducted the water from the west and part of tho south sido of the llard scrabble district, which made the building look as if it was undergoing the last of the forty days and nights of rain. During tho day heavy showers took place, but they proved only preparatory to the doluge which came down upon us bo tweon eight and nino o'clock in the eve ning. The rain was accompanied with vivid lightnings, and for over an hour the storm was fast and furious. Tho water came down iu sheets, which fairly glistened as tho Hashes of lightning fell upon them in quick secession. A fearful loss of life is reported from Allegheny, and a pecuniary loss beyond that caused the last destructive confla gration. ' At the Union dopot tunnel of tho Tan Handle railroad was flooded with some four feet of water, and of courso be came infpassablo for trains, and traflo for the time being on that road was suspended. In the Thirty-sixth ward were felt tho most costly results of tho deluge. ' The tcmendous body of water which swept down the hills into Sawmill run raised that stream with great rapidity and sent it whirling with tremendous velocity and power to the river. A large quantity of barrels and lumber wero carried away and fast piled up against the new iron bridgo which did not long resist tho fury of assault. Bolow, tho bridge by which Carson street crosses the river was swept from its abutments. So great was its force that a largo numbor of barges, with coal, were torn from their fastenings and swept down tho river. Tho tow boat B. P. Wood was also carried away at Wood's mill. A tremendous landslide occurred, cov ering the rails of the Pan Handle railroad to the depth of about eight feet. A train coming towards the city was stuck thore, and was not dug out until nearly morning. Another train was bottled up just below Sawmill run. Tho damage to the track will be great. The damage done to the business houses I is very groat, aud cannot be computed at ; this time. Mossrs. Arbuthnot, Shannon & Co., Liberty street, bad a valuable stock in! their cellar, and this was damaged to the ; amount of $5,000. In Allegheny the greatest damage was on Spring Garden avenue in the Seventh ward. In one tavern a number of persons were seated when water commenced to rise. A man named Hess thought to at tempt an escape by swimming and was drowned. A son of Alderman Bolster lost his life in a vain endeavor to rescue a babe. A young lady, aged sixteen years, is also among the victims. Thus far thirteen bodies have been re covered iu this section of the city, and at Wood's run three bodies have been found and five or six persons are missing. A well Known citizen named John Schafler is sup posed to have been lost, also Adam Bur gess, a police officer. The names of the drowned at Wood's run, are Mrs. Brannon, and a child named Gorman. The gas is extinguished, and until daylight comes, no conception of the tragedy can be felt. For mora than a mile out of Spring Garden avenue, Allegheny city, marks of destruction are everywhere seen. Houses are thrown together in heaps and some twenty-five or thirty houses on tho avenues are washed away, aud many buildings not totally dostioyed are soriously damaged. The water rose to a height of about fifteen feet aud flooded the first floors of all tho houses aud In many places the second stories. Several houses were swept into the middle of tin streets and others were carried hundreds of yards and shattered to pieces. A bouse containing two or three fum illes, at the rear of Centre street was destroyed aud it is supposod all the in mates were drowned. In Temperancevllle and Sawmill run tho elements made sad havoc. Fierce torrents swelled every little tributary of Sawmill run into a boiling stream and the accumu lating waters rushed with mad aud irre sistablo fury down the valley, gweoping everything iu their course. The track of destruction is marked by wreck of dwellings, bridges, Immense heaps of sCone, large piles of drift wood aud the torn and ragged sides of the hills. Seven Ufcleus bodies have already beeu found, and from twenty-five to thirty per ilous are missing. The iron bridge crossing Sawmill runBt Main atreet and five other bridges above were swojit away. At M'Laughlin's . about eleven miles west, ou the Pun Handle railroad, eleven persons are reported drowned ; also hun dreds of cattle, horses aud sheep.
