8 l)c irnco, New Bloomfitto, 3o. A True Snnke Story. Full forty or more years ago, when Mr. Chambers M'Kibbon (now of Chambors burg) lived on what is now known by old residents here as the old Tierce farm, a snake Incident occurred which has gone the rounds of the press from Maine to Los An golos, and yet few know where it happened or who were the parties contained in it. In those days Mr. M'K. was a farmer, happy and contented, and we bolieve, at that time had one child, a little daughter. It was the custom of this little girl at various timos to steal away from the tablo at moal with a part of her food to a socludod place, just outside a picket fence, which divided the yard from the field. Her mothor, for rea sons not definitely stated, thought fit to follow up and look after her child on one of theso occasions. Upon arriving at the fence she heard the voice of her child Baying in a childish way " quit, quit," as if gently repelling something. On looking over the fence her eyes met a sight which horrified her. The child was sitting among tho grass and upon her lap had crawled a large blacksnake which was lying coiled up and playfully contending for a piece of cake which the child held in hor hand. In those days Mrs. M'Kibbon was young and active, and wo might add here up to the time of hor death, which occurred a fow years since, proved horsolf capable of most any thing that was good and noble. Following the instincts of a mother's love, with one bound she cleared the fence and seizing the child by the shoulders dragged her from under tho roptile and fled. The above is from the Nowville Star, of last week. In order to ascertain its relia bility wo interviewed Mr. M'K., who kind ly told us that the facts contained therein are correct in the main, and the little child who figures so conspicuously in the narra tive, is now living in Fittsburg, married and happy. Chambersburg Public Opinion. A Father's Love A Queer Way to Show It. The Maysvillo, (Ky.,) Bulletin tells the following singular incident : " While we were in Ripley, a fow days ago, we learned a circumstance which in theso days of practical matters, struck us as a little odd. Homo two weeks ago, a gontleman in com fortable circumstances and apparently a man of education and refinement, arrived at that placo with his family on a small trading-boat. Being in ill health, he con cluded to rent a house and make Ripley for a tame his home. In his intercourse with the people he informed thom that he had been on the river for over twenty years, and followed trading rather for pleasure than profit. While his effects were being re moved from the boat to his residence, a laborer was earring a peculiar shaped box, wheu one of the children told him to handle it carefully, asdt contained the bones of his two little brothers. An inquiry into the matter developed the facts that twolve years ago the gentleman lost two children, to whom he was passionately attached, by death, and having a restless disposition, which impelled him to be on the move con " stantly,he could mot reconcile himself to leave tho remains of his two little ones among strangers. He chose rather to take them with him on his travels, which he has done ever since. They are contained in a neat iron casket, which he never allows out of his sight." A Jump of One Hundred Feet 011 a Wager. The Cincinnati Commercial, of a recent date, says : About three o'clock the other day a boy named John Leisser, eighteen or (nineteen years old, a worker in a machine shop on West Front street, jumped from the Cincinnati and Covington bridge, on a wager of 30, and the performance was carefully prepared for, skiffs having been provided and mamied to save the foolish youth from drowning. There were only a fow spectators, as the performance was private, but Leasser climbed on one of the rails, iz feet above tbe floor of the bridge, buttoned his coat and jumped. lie struck the water with his feet, disappeared for a few seconds, .and .came to the surface all right. He was pickod up by one of the skills Mid conveyed to tbe steamer Pat Rodgera. The distance from the rail to the surface of the water, perpendicularly, is 103 foot. The wonder is that death did not ensue from the ooacussion or shock to the system, produced ty the sudden con tact with the water from such a vast height. A Diabolical Contrivance. On the 19 lost., information was sent to tbe Selective force that Mrs. Charles C. Herring, wife of a carpet dealer on Second street below South, Philadelphia, received an infernal machine containing three pounds of powder. A note accompanied tbe box, stating it contained some newly-patented articles. The circumstances being suspicious, the box was carefully opoued. It was one foot long and eight inches wide, was filled with powder, on top of which, run through holes in a strip, were about fifty matches with the heads arranged to almost touch a slid ing lid. Suspicion foil on a son-in-law, named Ed ward Wagner, aged 25, residing at 808 South Fifth street, aud he was arrested Monday afternoon by Detective Mears and locked up at the Central Station. The handwriting of the note was said to be similar to bis. The'accukcd had a hearing and was held In f 10,000 to answer. New Advertisements. WHISKY & MIDNIGHT & Co., Hart's Falls, N.
