FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS We Invite commnnlotlnn from sll persons who re itittTcted iu matter, iirupft'ly iHjIotiKiu to thin de lurtmeut. i , Fashions Now and Then. It is an interesting fact and true to a great extent that the style of dress and ornaments of the Hebrew ladies of the present day and iu fact the prevailing toilet of all ladies is much the same as during the time of Solomon. With all the changes and variations of centuries, tho gradation of chignons and crinolines, we now find much of the simple grace and easy symmetry of ancient Greece. Tho Scriptures narrate a groat many tilings about the style of dress worn in the time of Solomon, and in the law of Moses several directions are given concerning xarmonts worn by the Israelites. In tho book of Judges the girls of that period are described by Deborah as " A prey of divers colors of noodlo-work," while Lemuel says, " Their clothing is of Bilk and purplo." Iu the frequent intercourse botween the Jewish and other nations the ladies tired of their primitive simplicity, sought the fashions of the clever Egyptians, the cle gaut Phoenicians, and the the luxurious Persians. Even patient Job became im patient at the dresses, and Isaiah de nounces the "women of that period," liv ing for nothing but dress and flirtation, with the one desire "to " see and be seen." The tunica worn by the ladies in the time of Solomon was much like tho polon aise of tc-day, and the belt with fancy clasps now worn are about thej same as the leather girdles and silvor bucklosworn ofold. Wo also find recorded that trains were worn to dresses, and that camels' hair shawls were common. Embroidered mantles, fastened with golden pins, are also spoken of. The hair was also oiled, dyed, and put up in coils ; little curlswere let baug over the foiehoad, and, strangcjto say, the girls of Solomon's time, it is stat ed, used paint. Veils were worn, and sandals were made of blue and violet colored leather, with fancy latchets. Solomon, as is related, said to Suulamito, " How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O, prince's daughter !" Hair nets were worn, and earrings of all forms and much value were very common. Bracelets on the right arm, strings of pearls and beavy'gold chains around the neck, rings on the fingers, and other orna ments, were all worn by the ancient He brew ladies. Strawbcrrj-ruddlug Sauce. Take small fruit or bruised fruit, or any t hat is loft from the table, or any that will not keep well until you wish to use it, place in a closely-covered porcelain-lined saucepan on the stove, with barely water enough to cover the fruit, and stew gently for three minutes after it begins to boil. Then strain through a cloth or through a bair-sieve, sweeten the juice to the taste, return to the fire and scald the sugar in, and, if desired, thicken with a very little com starch or arrowroot, not more than ouc toaspoonful to a quart of the juice. If this juice makes the sauce stronger than you need, reduce it with water. Use it for boiled rice, corn starch, boiled fruit pud dings, or any other pudding with which it harmonizes. Houc; Uecs. Professor Agassiz said, in referring to honey bees : "The beehive consists, when in full activity, of one queen, several hun dred drones, and many thousand working bees. These constitute a community by which combined system of labor Is carried on, transcending in many respects the most complicated actions of man himself. Their structure shows no organ similar to those by which the mental functions are manifested in the higher animals and In man. Tbey have no brain proper, nor does thoir nervous system correspond in any way to that of the vertebrates." To Make a Bulky Horse Draw. In India where a horse can and will not draw, instead of whipping, spurring or burning him, as is frequently the practice iu more civilized countries, they quietly get a rope and attaching it to one of the fore feet, one or two men take hold of it, aud advancing a few paces ahead of the horse, pull their best. No matter how stubborn the animal may be, a few doses of such treatment effect a perfect cure. Cucumbers on Trellises. Tho Gardner'$ Monthly says uo one who has not tried it can have any idea of the luxurious growth of cucumbers whrfl; train ed upon a stake, which has a set of stubby brunches left along its length ; and the crop on some so trained was enormous. By this plan the vines occupy less ground and it is the natural habit of the cucumber to climb instead of trailing on the ground - - Remedy for, Croup In one Minute. This remedy is simply alum. Take a kuifo or grater, and shave or grate oft" in small particles about twice the quantity of sugar or honey, to make it palatablo, and administer as quickly as possible. This will give almost instant relief. Chartered March 11, 1870. XT . IB . Mutual Aid Society OF PENNSYLVANIA, HOME OFFICE : LKHANON, Lebanon county, Penu'a. President, Hecretary. Treasurer, Hon. J.
