A farmer's wifo in Montgomery county sends us the following receipt for a " Wholesome Fiold Drink," nud ns the season is now approaching when it can be used, we publish it that all may make it who choose : The excessive use of cold water during the sweltering beat of sum mer often results in serious and alarming illness. It is therefore advisable that some beverage should bo substituted for it of which those oppressed can parrake with safety. For tbis purpose I am aware of no better or more refreshing drink than the following : Take of the best white Ja maica ginger root, carefully bruised two ounces ; cream of tartar, one ounce ; water six quarts, to be boiled for about five min utes, then h trained ; to the strained liquor add one pound of sugar, and again place it over the fire, keep it well Btirred till the BUgar is porfectly dissolved, and then pour it into an earthen vessel, into which you have previously puftwo drachms of tartar ic acid, and the rind of one lemon, and let it remain till the boat is reduced to a luke warm temperature ; then add a teaspoonful of yeast, stirring thorn well together, and bottle for use. The corks must be well se cured. The drink will bo in a high per fection in four or five days. This is a very refreshing and wholsome beverage, and one which may be largely partaken of without any unpleasant results, even in the hottest weathor. To Destroy Insects. Hot alum water is a recent suggestion as an incectcide. It will destroy red and black ants, cockroaches, spiders, chintz bugs, and all the crawling pests which infest our bouses. Tako two pounds of alum and dissolve it in three or four quarts of boiling water ; let It stand on the fire till the alum disappears ; then apply it with a brush whilo nearly boiling hot, to every joint and crevice in your closets, bedsteads, pantry shelves, and the like. Brush the crevices in the floor of the skirt ing or mop boards, if you suspect that they harbor vermin. If in whitewashing a ceiling plenty of alum is added to the lime, it will also serve to keep insects at a dis tance. Cockroaches will flee the paint which has been washed in cool alum water. Sugar barrels and boxes can be freed from ants by drawing a wide chalk mark just around the edgo of the top of them. The mark must be unbroken or they will creep over it; but a continuous chalk line half an iuch in width will set their depredations at nought. Powdered alum or borax will keep the chintz bug at a respectablo dis tance, and travelers should always cairy a package of it in their hand bags to scatter over and undor thoir pillows, In placos where they have reason to suspect the presence of such bedfellows. Turtle-Egg Butter. Cue of the peculiar productions of Brazil, described by Mr. Fletcher, was "turtlo-egg butter." There are innumerable turtles on the sand-bars of the Amazon, and the na tives make it a business, at the proper season, to collect their, eggs, which are dopositcd in the sand. These are thrown into a boat, and when a sullicient quantity has been collected, they are trampled by the feet of the Indians. After a short time an oily substance rises to the surface, and fs 'skimmed off, and this is " Turtle-egg butter." Many millions of eggs are de stroyed in this way every year, and the article is largely consumed. Bub Mr. Fletcher oonfessed that although be bad partaken of many strange dishes In the course of his travels, and had learned to relish them, be never could taste turtlo-egg butter. He didn't exactly like the manner of churning. A Valuable Recipe for Gull. An intelligent and experienced farmer, rising sevonty years of ago, residing in Allen township, Cumberland county, has assured us that the following ointment, if applied two or three times a day, will cure the most obstinate windgalls : Take one pound of the leaves of Stramonium, (Jamestown weed), bruised ; two pounds of fiesh butter or bog's lard, and one gill of the spirits of turpentine ; put the whole of the ingredients into a clean earthen crock and place it with the contents over live coals for twenty or thirty minutes, stirring it occasionally ; then strain it through a coarse cloth or canvass, aud It forms a con sistent ointment, with which anoint the wiudgallB two or three times a day. Fifty dollars had been offered for the above receipt. So says out informant who kindly furnished it. Lancaster tanner. t3T There U nothing so tends to shorten ' the lives of old people and injure their health as the practice or sitting up late, particularly winter evenings. This is oa " peoially the case where there is a grown-up daughter lu the family. We publish tbis item at the earnest request of several young meu who are direotly interested In the matter.
