CollHiner'g Little Mintake.
Old Mr. Collamer, one of the members of
our churcb, is axtretnoly deaf. Last Sun
day tha clergyman, during bis sermon bad
occasion to introduce a quotation, and as it
was quite long be brought the volume witb
him, aud when tbo time came be picked up
tbe book and began to read from it. We
always sing tbe Old Hundred doxology af
ter tho sermon at ourcburch.and Mr. Colla
mer seeing tbe pastor witb tbe book
thought tbe time bad corao, so wbile tbo
minister was reading, be opened bis bymn
book at tbe place. Just as tbe clergyman
laid tbe volume down tbe man sitting next
to Mr. Collamer began to yawn, and Mr.
Collamer, thinking be was about to sing,
immediately broke out into Old Hundred
at tbe top of bis voice. As tbe clergyman
was just beginning " secondly," and as
tbere was of course perfect silence iu tbe
church, tbe effect of Mr. Collamer's vocifer
ation was very startling. But tbe good ,
old man didn't notice that anything was
tbe matter, so be kept right on aud sang
tbe entire verse through. When be con
cluded be observed that everybody else
seemed to be quiet, excepting a few who
were laughing, so be leanod over aud said
out loud to tbe man who yawned, " What's,
the matter with this congregation anyhow?
Why don't they go home?" The man
turned scarlet, and tbe perspiration broke
out all over bim, for be felt the eyes of tbe
congregation were upon him, and he knew
that he would have to yell to make Mr.
Collamer hear. Bo he touched his lips
witb bis finger as a sign for the old man to
keep quiet. But Mr. Collamer misunder
stood the motion. " Goiu' to sing another
bymn, hey? All right," and ho began to
fumble bis bymn book again. Then tbe
sexton sailed up the aisle, and explained
matters out loud to Mr. Collamer, and that
gentleman subsided while tbe minister pro
ceeded with bis discourse. The elders
have written Mr. Collamer a note lequest
ing him in tbo future not to join' in the
sacred harmony.
tW A gentleman, speaking of a friend
who was prostrated by illness, remarked
that " he can hardly recover, since bis
constitution is all' gone," said a bystander,
" I do not see how he lives at all." "O,"
responded the wag, "he lives on the by
laws." Vicksbufg offers a reward for the
recovery of an old lady, aged one hundred
and eleven, who, it is supposed was kid
napped by some felonious journalist from a
rival city, desirous to secure her obituary
for bis own local items.
tW An imaginative Irishman gavo ut
terance to this lamentation : ' I returned
to the balls of my fathers by night, and
found thorn all in ruins ! I cried aloud,
" My fathers I whore are thoy ?' And echo
answered, "Is that you, Patrick McCar
thy ?"
tW Tbe following concise and compre
hensive note was sent to an Illinois mer,
chant by a neighboring farmer tbe other
day : " Sond me a trace chain and two
hinges. Jane had a baby lost night also,
two padlocks."
tW A Barrister, blind of one eyo, plead
ing with bis spectacles on, said, " Qontle
inen, iu my argument I shall use nothing,
but what is necessary" "Then," replied
a wag, "take out one of the glasses of your
spectacles."
IS" " Why don't you ask your sweet
heart to marry you ?"
" I have asked her."
"What did she say?"
"Ob I've the refusal of her."
Mr. Smith is bound to have his joke.
His wife walked nearly in front of a rail
road train tbo other day, and he said that
if she had gone a step farther, his children
would have bad a stepmother.
Z3T An Iowa newspaper proclaims itself
an "honest newspaper," and in another
part of tho same paper says: "When a
man professes honesty now-a-days, keep
your eye peeled for a thief."
tW A dry goods merchant of Hartford
was asked bow be spent his evenings. His
reply was, "At night I store my mind, and
during the day I mind my store." He was
alive at last accounts.

tache ICS1" An attorney observed to his brother
iu court that be thought whiskers were

his friend ; " a lawyer cannot be too bare

it's not dirt ; it's only dust."
