Old John B , of Uie town of W , this State, was, during bis life, one of the most inveterate liars and story-tellers ex tant. The shoemaker that John patron ized, lived about a half mile from tho towD, and, in John's estimation could beat anything in the town, or out it, mending or making a pair of boots or shoes. One morning, late in tho fall, John started early to have a pair of shoes mended for his wife. As was his custom, wheu going out of town, bo shouldered bis well-worn shot Run, thinking that he might perchance get some game on the way. lie bad got half way to bis destination, when be beard great "flutterin," as be expressed it, overhead. He looked up aud with pleasure saw a flock of wild geese on their mi gratory journey to warmer climates. John's gun had but one load. He blazed away, but was astonished that no game down. Ho loaded hastily and in ramming the second load, his ramrod stuck tight. He had no time to loose, and so be shot ramrod and all at tho rapidly passing flock. Nothing fell. John proceeded on his way wondering how be had missed, for be was a good shot. After getting through at the shoemaker's and on hiB return, and when near the spot where be bad made his vain shots in the morning, he heard another " flutteiin." On looking up he was agree ably surprised to see the ramrod bo bad shot away early in the morning, on its re turn, "itrungfuil of at fine game at he had ever thot in hit life." John of course was surprised, aud so were we when he told us the story. t3T small boy has sent to an exchange the following information : "A fu dois ago we lost our cat. She got dtowned in Mr. 's well ; but nobody kuowd she got drowned in the well, and so Mr. 'a fokes and M. s fokes, aud all tlie. nabors besides, drinked outen tbe well just the saim. Our Teutonic friend, Johannes K , entered one of our drug stores,, and thus addressed one of tbe clerks : . "Doctor, I feel sig all ofcr, und de bcev bles dells me I petter take one fissick. "All right sir," says the clerk, "will you have a dose of salts, or some purgative pills?" " Vel, vot it costs for dom saulds?" "Ten cents, sir." " Und how much for dom fissicking pills?" , "I'll give you a dose at the same price." "After a vain search in his pocket for tbe required sum, be asked : " Doctor, you tond got some second-hand bill, ain't it?", , ., , tW In a rural town not fifty miles from Providence, an elderly gentleman died and left a somewhat eccentrio wife. The parish clergyman, in pursuance of his duty called on tbe bereaved wife shortly after her husband's decease, and among other remarks, said that the deceased was " now free from all the ills that flesh is heir to." " Umph," replied the sorrowful wife, " thero wasn't much flesh to bim ; all skin and bone 1" tW A young lady in Lancaster, has the initials Y. M. C. A. engraved on one corner of her visiting cards, which she hands to certain gentlemen visitors. At first they suppose she belongs to the Young Men's. Christian Association, but it is not long be fore they rightly construe the letter, You May Come Again." IW A man In Lehigh county who ate sixty eggs at a sittiug, is looking for a new boarding bouse. He wants to get into a nice, quiet family where his company will be considered an equivalent for his board though be wouldn't mind paying a dollar a week if his meals are brought to bis room. His health is very delicate. tW " What is that which Luke bad be fore, Paul bad behind, that girls have, that boys do not have, that Mrs. O. Gallagher bad twice in the middle before she was married, and which, if you wish to have both behind and before, you must go to Liverpool? It's only the letter L." raT" More bread, landlord. 1 always eat a good deal of bread with my meat" "bo 1 see, sir, and a good neat or meat with your bread." tW How to ct into a scrape Oo to the baiber's.
