8 Ije drawn, Nero Sloomficlir, )o. A Ilald on Counterfeiters. A party of government detectives have made a raid on counterfeiters in Tennessee and North Carolina. The crusade was the most extended, stratcgio and well di rected ever organized, and resulted in the arrest of about sixty outlaws, with quite a number yet to be heard from. After con sultation by the authorities at Washington, it was determined to place the whole mat ter iu the hands of Colonel Whiteley, chief of the Unitod Slates secret service corps, by whom, with the assistance of Attorney General Williams, plans were matured to entrap and capture the guilty parties. Whiteley selected from his corps a number of the most experienced officers. The se cret service officers obtained the condflenco of the ccntcrfuiters, and they communica ted their doings to the district attorney at Kuoxvillo, Tcnn., and Ashville, N. C. The officers became aware of the organiza tion of counterfeiters into distinct and sepai ato gangs, nil of them co-operating and working together, each gang number ing from fivo to eight members, rccklesR, determined ond thoroughly armed. Each gang were fully aware of the- movements of the others, and were in communication such as to enablo them to summon aid at short notice. Becoming communicative, the counterfeiters told where the illicit money was made. It came direct from Ohio, and was iu denominations of fifty cents fractional currency, ten-dollar na tional bank notes, and fifty-dollar United States legal tenders of the series of 18G9. It was transported into Tennessee and North Carolina the snmo as any other com modity, by wholesale jobbers and dealers, with regularity and precision, and supplied to customers and friends in sums to suit, according to the demands of trade. In ad dition to the currency trade there was al ways extensive dealings in counterfeit Mex ican dollars which were principally put oil' on travelers and emigrants going to Texas and the far west. This money was manu factured in Kentucky, and the transactions in both kinds of money were enormous. The criminals include men in every station in life lawyers, doctors, justices of the peace, postmasters, United States deputy marshals, clerks of courts and numerous merchants. Sufficient evidence as to the guilt of the parties having been obtained to justify action on the part of the government officers, warrants of arrest to the number of ninety were issued by the United States district attorneys in east Tennessee and west North Carolina. Expeditions were organized of mounted men, armed and equipped, and started. The territory cm braced an area of 125 miles long and 57 broad. The ground in North Carlina em braced an area of six hundred square miles. The programme was admirably carried out. It is estimated that about seventy-five ar rests in all will be made. What Befcl a Hoarder of (jrceubacks. The Allentown, Pa., Chronicle says : " A man residing in Saucon township, this county, whose name our iuquiry failed to ascertain, had hoarded indifferent places about his house twenty thousand dollars in greenbacks. When the recent panio came upon the country he grew fearful lest in the prevailing scarcity of currency his savings might be discovered and stolen, lie went out and offered some of it to his neighbors on mortgage, and the offer be ing accepted, he went to take it out of its hiding places. Six thousand dollars were .found to be so moulded as not to admit of indentification, and the saving farmer pos sibly knows now that his wealth would have been safer in somebody else's hands than his own. It would be a pleasure to get hold of his name, for while a man has a right to dispose of his money as he pleases, one whose method has proven so disastrous would servo as a warning to all similarly disposed. And we do not doubt but that we may have many such iu Le high county penny wise and pound fool ish." A Had Calamity. A London paper says : We do not re member ever to have seen anything sadder than the following announcement among the "Deaths," recently in London: "On the 8rd of June, at Durban, Port Natal, Annie aged 13 yeara ; on the 4th, Violet, aged 11 years ; on the 6th, Maud aged 13 years ; on the 7th, Robert William aged fl years ; on the 8th, Kate, aged 4J years ; on the 11th, Ernest, aged 2 years and 9 months the children of R.
