8 Ijt nuo, Neto Bloomftdb, 3a. Yellow Fever. A letter from Memphis, dated the 7th inst., says, the "ravages of the fever In this city are deplorable. It Is spreading witb alarming rapidity, and the deaths have be come so numerous that the people have more than they can do to decently bury the dead. Yesterday several dead bodies lay for many hours unattended to from the inability to obtain coffins. Among the more ignorant class much inhumanity is reported. There is a great want of atten tion to the sick, owing to tho lack of nurses. The city authorities have proved unequal to the emergency, although the mayor, aided by a few citizens, has labored considerably to reduce tho suffering. An effect will be made to increase the member ship of the Howard association, a more thorough examination of the infected dis tricts will be attempted, and efforts will be made to supply mfcdical attendance and nurses where they are most needed. Nine teen nurses came from New Orleans yes terday, and more are on the way. Twen ty thousand dollais have been subscribed by the citizens, to be used for sanitary purposes, and contributions are flowing in from all quarters. Tho mortality yesterday was tho greatest sinco the fever appeared. All that are able are leaving tho city, and a feeling prevails that the worst is not yet reached. The malady is the true yel low fever of the most malignant type, and those upon whom it becomes firmly fasten ed rarely recover. Persons who are familiar with tho disease express fears for the future, and consider the situation decided ly unfavorable for checking tho plague. There is no present prospect of frost, which has been earnestly hoped for." A $130FonI. A drover named Lawrcnco John, from "West Chester, was accosted by a stranger at Thirty-first and Chestnut streets on Monday night, who asked him to drink. He declined this, but acceded to a request to walk to Thirty-third street to look after some baggage. They had met a man who said he had sent tho baggage to tho depot, and asked the stranger to pay $ 150, which was owing him. The drover's newly-made friend had but a $'-20 noto nnd some gold coin, as ho represented, in his pocket-book, and he asked the drover for $130 until he got back to the dopot, where he would meet his wife and repay it. Tho drover refused the gold, saying he would wait un til his friend met his wife, and so handed river tho $130. The friend then gave the drover an umbrella and requested him to go to the depot and show it to his wife, who would recognize it and pay him the money. In tho mean time he would take a drink witb the man to whom ho paid tho money and follow in a few minutes. Tho drovor went to the depot, but ho met neither man nor wifu, and has but the um brella for his $180. A Comical Sight The Logansport Ind. Star relates and vouches for tho truth of the following re cent occurraneo in Cass county, in that state : " For somo days past the weather had been dry, and ponds on tho prairie failed in water. Tho turtles nnd frogs tfcjct had been living in the vicinity of ono of these stood it for a day or two, but it finally became too dry for the frogs, and tiiey decided to migrate. The noareet pond that contained water was three miles distant, and to this the turtles and frogs started in solemn procession, the turtles In advance, sagauiously piloting the way, And the frogs bringing up the rear, with their deep bass and shrill tenor cries : "-Go it J" "Oolt!" "Waterl" " Water 1" The procession stretched out over tho prairie a quarter of a mile long, and steadily march ed to the goal, when such a roliuking soaue as ensued can be better imagined tho do scribed. An Officer Murdered. On the 0th inst., at Paris, Ky., W. A. Barton, wns murdered by Edward and Matt Current. The Curronts and Henry Clay, created a disturbance in a saloon, when Burton entered and endeavored to quiotihem. ' Edward Current shot at him scvoral times with a revolver, two of the shota taking eflect iu his breast. Matt Current then seized Burton, and shot him throng the head.
