FARM AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS JTc fneffe comrnHnfcnMoniifrom ffli! versonmrhoare interested in mailers properly belonging to this department. . Lands Unimproved and Improved. BY rilOlf. J. D. UUTLEn. A. lady having two lovers, Accepted the oue who was poor but smart, rather than the other who was rich but an imbecile. When asked the reason of her choice she said : " A man who is poor may got over it ; but if one is a natural-born fool, he novor can got over it." She is a good modol for a farmer. Lot him prefor a Nebraska farm, for its capa bilities though unimproved, rather than improved but fertile land further East. Kobraska land has no defocts which it cannot got over. But this is more than can be said of the sterile regions, whore the characteristics are stumps, stones steeps and swamps, as well as a soil on which one may sow a bushel and reap only a peck. , No making a silk purse out of a cow's ear. Better a fortune in than with a man or farm. The one must grow, the other may dwindle. So think 5,000 farm hunters, who have bought railroad land of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. Many of them have little or no capital, but thoy pay no thing but six per cent interest, for two or four years, and then the principal in soven installments. Old Shoes. You probably think that if you look very sharply at an old shoe when you throw it away, you will know it again if it ever comes back to you. But that doesn't at all follow. One of these days you may button your dress with an old pair of slip pers, comb your hair with a boot, or grasp a cast off gaiter while at your dinner. You don't see how this can be? Well, wo'U tell you. Old shoes are turnod to account by manufacturers in the following manner : They are cut into very small pieces and kept for a couple of days in chlorido of sulphur. The effect of this is to make the leather hard and brittle Next the mate rial is withdrawn from the action of the chloride of Sulphur, washed with water and dried. When thoroughly dry it is ground to powder, and mixed with some substance like glue or gum, that causes it to adhere togethor. It is then pressed into molds and shaped into buttons, combs, Jcnife handles, etc So you see how it may tome to pass that you will comb your hair with an old boot, and fasten your clothes with a slipper. tW Mr. John Altman, a farmer residing a mile West of Greensburg is the happy possessor of a two-year old bull and a spring chicken which manifest the most remarka ble affection for one another. About three weeks ago the chicken lost its mother, through the subtle agency of a weasel, and the forlorn little creature went about chirp. Ing its woe till the bull took compassion on it, and assuaged its grief by certain acts of kindness and tenderness that resulted In a mutual regard that is very curious. The chicken now will roost on no other place save on the bull's neck a few inches back of the horns, while the bull complacently chewi his oud or calmly sleeps wlUiont dis turbing It in the least. Hatching from Cold Eggi. ' ' A hen having left her nest for two days and a night, after setting within two or three days of the time of hatching, and the eggs being perfectly cold, out of curiosity I determined to try an experiment. I re moved them to the garret room, which was very hot, the thermometer In the cool est part of the house being at the time 05 Fah. On the third day from the time the eggs were left by the ken, they hatched by themselves, and the chickens are now run ning about the yard quite strong and hearty. I would like to know if any one ever met with such an incident. - , , Late Plowing In of Clover Fields. A , correspondent of the Cincinnati Gazette details several experiments whioh show that when clover sod la turned down in May, after the clover Is np some Inches, corn planted thereon Is far less liable to be troubled by the cut worm, than if the land were plowed the fall before or early in the spring. The worms food on the clover In stead of the corn. Besides, if the clover is In rank, growing 'condition when turned under, and the roots full of sap, it will be more rotten at August, than if plowed ear lier, when the roots are not full of sap. Charcoal In the Kitchen. All kinds of utensils, it is said, can be purified from disaereeable odors, bv rins ing them out with charcoal dust wet into a son paste. Putrid water la immediately deprived of it unpleasant smell by its use and it will keep fresh meat sweat for i long time. It is further stated that three or four pieces of It, the size of a hen's egg put into wnter in which tainted meat li boiled, will effectually remove the tainL Photographs !
