There is a world of comfort ami down right luxury in a good scratch, both for hu mau people and for domestic! animals. Posts and bars for rubbing and scratching should be put up in pastures and barnyards, swkI kopt moderately rough so as to take hold of the skin. Hut our principal ohjoct in this present writing is to insist upon a more free use of the curry-comb and brush, upon horses and cattle, at all seasons. These stable imple ments are not used as often and regularly tut they should be by the generality of farm ers. A good drossiug down of the horse each morning with the curry-comb and brush is fully equal in health-giving power and elasticity of movement, to quarts of oats. It is a grateful attention, repaid in many fold by the aniiffal which is tho stated recipient of it. But while bestowing this care on the Ii oreo as most persons do, knowing its ben eficial effects, they very generally seem to forgot that oxen and cows are equally ben efited by daily application of tho card. There is no room for doubt on this subject with those who have boon accustomed to bestow this attention to the dairy and work ing stock. A free use of the card gives re pose to tho animals, enables them to enjoy and digest their food in quiet instead of raking their bodios against posts, trees and fences, as opportunity offers for allaying tho irritation produced by the accumula tion of dust, hay seed, and other irritants common to tho stable and barnyard. Even young colts, calves and yearlings aro great ly benefited by the use of the card, while ttn daily use is a step in tho breaking or training process by which the services of the animals aro made more readily avail able when properly matured for labor. Itsccnis absurd to scrub a fattineng pork r,but those who bave practiced it concur in it utility. One reason why hogs like to immerse themselves in pools of stagnant water, is found in the fact that their bodies become encrusted with dirt, causing an itching which the pool they seek allays. Tliis irritation renders thom restless, and retards tho process of fattening very "materially. This can be prevonted by an application of soap-suds, aided by a splint broom commonly used to clean stables "with. A liberal application of suds and a good, scrubbing daily will allay irritation -and give that repose to the animals which aa essential to steady and rapid accumula tion or flesh and fatty matter. Tho labor of preparing and applying the wash at least once a day during tho milder portions of the season, will be amply remunerated in the increased weight of the animals when the slaughtering season arrives. Worth While for Women to Know. I'eonlo are content to understand very lilXle of the conditions of comfort in houses, The question of health may be loft to the care of physicians, and that of beauty to the architect, but one would suppose on matters of comfort each ouo would look out for himself. 1 here is excuse lor this ne glect in business mou, who are hardly at borne long enough to know whether a house is tenable or not; but it is strange that women will endure damp, foul odors, smoke and dust year after year without trying to remove the nuisances. The only idea most women Lave of suppressing any evil of the mart is to " send for a man to fix it." Work- tneu are not always to be had, and, if they are, cost money, and a breach of comfort may last years before every thing comes together for its mending. A woman needs 4KH.li muscle and management to tako care of a family, unless she can afford to pay a third of hor inoome for these things in oth ers. The olever woman is an actual ac quaintance, who goes about her house, spy. iag a loose knob here and screwing it up, apringing with her light plaue to smooth down a door that sticks in tho casing, fit' ting a neat strap to jpievent a window's . rattling, besides papering, , painting, and varnishing with more nicety than one me chanic out of a dozen. Such a woinau is worthy to be called a house-mother, after the good German word. How can a woman livo years within four walls and not grow food of thom, and seek to add to their .comfort?" Cow s Out of Fashion. The N. Y. Sun says that a company has been formed with a capital of five hundred thousand dollars for the manufacture of butter. A well-known chemist has Intro duced the plan, and a number of wealthy ' iNM-sons, includiug several leading men in the butter trade, bave purchased stock in the company. The butter is made from Cut or suet bought from the slaughter houses, and after passing through certain processes with the necessary mixture of suilk and salt, is said to be equal to the fiotxit country butter. The protlts are ex reeled to be over one hundred per oeut. Photographs t JACOB COBLE, Photographic Artist, NEWPORT, PENN'A.
