A Shad Story. " Captain Charley" tolls a good story of how a Tivoll mail carrier was "sold" a few days ago. It Bcems that this mail man is also a shad fisherman, about this time of tho year, and they do ny that lie "draws the long bow" fearfully when narrating his exploits in the shad catching line. Well, some of the " boys" got their heads togeth er on a little plan to get even with him by " selling" the man of mail and shad. So they told him that in Albany there dwelt a gontleman who would give twenty-five dol lars for the sight of a nine pound shad. The name and address of this man were imparted to the Tivolite, who carefully marked them down aud "bided his time." So did tho follows who were putting tip the job on him. Not long after tho Tivoli sbadder caught a nine pound fish, and hast ened to Albany with it, to claim the prom ised twenty-live dollars reward. He found the gentleman at his residonce, and, placing tho shad boforo him, the following conver sation took place : Tivolite 'Mornin', sir , how d'ye do ? Glad to see you." Albanian Good morning, sir. Tivolite Are you the man that said he would give twenty-five dollars to see a nine pound shad? Albanian YV ell, no, I didu't say so ; but I would give twenty-five dollars, or even five hundred, for the sight of any shad, big or little. The fact is, my frioud, I'm blind ; and it , looks as though somebody- had been having a joke at your expense." The man of mail and shad returned to Tivoli a wiser as well as a sadder man. IIe tells no more " big ones" about his shad ding exploits, and when the train hands as they paBs his humble door query, as they do quite frequently, in regard to that nine- pounder, he just ' takes no pride' in what they say, but considers the source from whence it comes. tW Iu one of the towns of Mississippi, two colored men were arrested on the charge of burglary. Thejury, before whom they were tried wero all colored. After the case was tried, they retired and made a verdict, which was announced to the court. On being called, tho judge asked for the verdict, which the foreman delivered as follows : " Dis jury find dat one of the 'cuse bus ted in do sto' and stole dat bacon, aud dat oder didn't do noffin." ' "Which one do you find guilty?" asked the judge. "Dat' a de question, boss,',' returned the foreman ; dat' jes' what we can't find out, and we rocommeuded dat de honorable coat jes' have a oder trial, aud find out which ob dem two niggers stole de bacon." t5?AUHlo four year old, residing a short distance from the city, was saying the Lord's Prayer a short time ago at his mother's knee, and after ho had finished tt his mother' said : " Xow, Bandy, asked God to make you a good boy." The child raised his eyes to his mother's face for a few moments, ns if iu deep thought, and then startled hor with the following reply ! " It's no use, ma. lie won't do it ; I've asked him a heap of times." The striking difference between a yougg man and a young woman is illustrat ed by a croaker, who says that the first thing a young man doos when he sees a friend with a new hat on, is to take it oft' serenely try it on his own head : but when a young lady sees one of her acquaintances with a new bonnet Bhe just lifts up hor nose and serenely wonders "whore tho thing got that fright" 1 ' ' t3T" A little girl who bad received a pa rental injunction to remember what the minister said returned from church delight ed. "I remember something," she said. " Ah 1 very glad of it," replied the fa ther : " what did he say t" '. , . "He said," she oried, , "'A collection will now be taken up.' " .. ' tW An eccentric temperance man says : "A champagne cork Is a good thing in its place. Its place is a nock of a bottle. Any where cIho it is no longer useful', , Ha who . ties the cork from the bottlo ronders a useful thing useless, and the economy of the, universe suflors." , Some ait) so deicato' that they are afraid to ride, for, fear of the horse running away; afraid to walk, for fear the dew might fall; afraid to sail,' for fear the. boat might upsot ; but they aro nover afraid to got married, which is more .riak ful than all the otltors put together. , , '. i; ; 13T Not long agoayouthj older iu wit than in years, after being catechised con-' cerning the pbwei' of nature, replied :" "' "Now I thtiRt there's one thing nature can't do." " What i it my child f" "She can't make Dill 's 'mouth any bigger without setting bis' ears back." .... A youth stepped into a book store and asked, "what kind of pens do you sell here, mister?" 'All kind, answered one of the clerks. ' "Do you?" .said the little Chap ; " then give mo ten cents , worth of pig pons." ' "
